So this article was just posted on ESPN

http://espn.go.com/b...rick-throw-deep

Here is what I do not get. Johnson and Jones both often beat their man within the first 10 yards off the line (I looked for links to video of this but could not find them...sorry). So for now this is based on my observations from watching every snap of every game on a 60'' plasma.

Why do we then wait to try to connect on a pass that has to travel 50 yards through the air, which we know Fitz cannot throw with any consistency (or at all). Why not design plays to hit our receivers 15 yards out with room to run instead of attempting to throw that deep. There is a much better chance to drop the ball over a WRs shoulder at 15 yards than there is at 50 yards. And yes, at that point they would still have to beat the safety, but it is better than our WRs stopping or having to come back to the ball because it didn't make it all the way to them.

Actually, we don't even have to design these plays. We alreay have these plays. I see them often. Instead of the getting the ball out to them though Fitz waits for them to run another 35 yards then tries to hit the homerun. It just does not make sense to me. If our receivers beat their cover guy they have the speed and/or moves to then beat the safety. The yards are there to be had, we just need to take them.

We sure do need to lead the passer when throwing more and let the receiver do the work, and hit them early, and in stride.

Those are patterns that will work for Fitz. But this throw to a Spot method is over used. Let the WR use his skills and keep running during and after the catch. Johnson would be very good at this because he gets seperation in his first shuffle step off the line usually and the CB is recovering right away.

Good thought DBF. That would play to Fitzys short yardage accuracy. His best stats are 5-15 yds i have read. Even moreso with CJ and Fred too.

[insert snide comment about getting a new quarterback here]

Just kiddin KD.

That is the most popular answer with good reason right now

Exactly! Glad I got an agreement before a "Fitz sucks" comment. I would also love to see more of the split backs formation with Freddy and CJ setting up simultaneously on opposite sides of the field for a catch and run out of the backfield.

I think we should just make the offense a little more classic. Regular I formations (mix in some fj/cj dual back stuff), and run some play action. Helps create more space for fitz, plus gets him on the move where he thrives more.

Unfortunately, we've tried that and it hasn't worked well. Fitz on these play action roll outs has been really inaccurate.

Something is wrong with the guy--because pretty much every throw he's trying now (boots, outs, slants, deep balls) have not been accurate. Let's hope he figures something out.

There are ways to be successful in the NFL without having to pass 20+ yards a play in the NFL. The first step is to have a defense. A good defense makes the game shorter, it gives the offense more time.

Why is it everyone wants to pass 30 yards per play? It didn't work with the fun 'n gun, it hasn't worked successfully for any teams. Now, someone will say, but but, XYZ team throws 3 or 4 times 40 yards down field in the air. Yep, but it is not their formula for success. They set up their success to get those plays. I haven't seen much success on our offense or any commitment to game planning that would set us up for that success.

Fitz may not be all-pro but he is capable of being on this team and a part of its success.

I dont understand this thread...I think its implying Fitz tries to throw the ball more than 20 yards...I havent seen that much this year....what I have seen is Fitz TRYING to hit the open WRs when they are open in the first 10 yards, but he is so terrible he even mis-fires on those throws

im not sure what games your watching where Fitz tries those "long"er passes...

I mean I agree with your premise, our WRs (especially SJ) ARE open early in their routes/their short routes...Fitz just blows at throwing those throws as well...

go to the games...they don't get open especially Jones

Exactly, kinda the reason I've been talking about acquiring Plaxaco Burris or now trade for Dwayne Bowe to help in the passing offense. So lame to watch Chan Gailey call a 5 WR empty backfield shotgun spread set and know that only one guy is gonna be open.

My suggestion, find different ways to make the run game work and limit the passes Fitz needs to throw. Then replace Dave wannstooge with the ball boy and the defense should get better.
