Johnny Hammersticks
Totally agree. And I don't know if it's related to Southerland being back, but MCW looked much better this game than he has in the last 3. He let his game flow and take what was there instead of trying to make things happen. What the heck happened to Christmas though? He seemed to really be coming along but today he was a non-factor, borderline terrible. MCW definitely plays better when he plays with a "pass first" mentality. Looked like a NBA lottery pick out there today. Christmas has been so Dr. Jeckel/Mr. Hyde all season long. My read is that he makes a stupid play, gets an ear-full from JB (or gets benched), and he completely loses his composure. The kid really needs to mature emotionally. He has some moments on the court where he does something awesome offensively, and I'm thinking....wow this kid is going to be amazing!! Most of the time I'm wondering why he was a McDonalds All-American. Good thing Keita has been putting in some quality minutes. Big game vs UCONN on Wednesday. Miyagi-Do Karate
Really solid win today...obviously. Some monster dunks out there. That charge call on the CJ Fair flush was complete garbage IMO. This is very clearly a different basketball team with Southy on the floor. Not only for his perimiter shooting, but for his leadership presence. Something that has been lacking. I will hold to my early season opinion that this is a final 4 quality team. Oh yeah, and CJ Fair might be the most under-rated player in the country. 1) The CJ Fair charge call was probably the worst call of the year (in an otherwise well-called game). You cannot call a charge there, where the guy runs in front after the player has begun to elevate for a long monster dunk. It's unheard of. 2) I have a feeling that JB gave Southerland a ton of minutes so that people would quit playing zone on them. With Southerland back, we can shoot teams out of zones in about two seconds. 3) By the way, best play of the day was Southerland's no-look to Triche for the jam. 4) Sad to see Grant's minutes go way down. He's actually better on defense and the glass than Southerland. Hopefully, JB can figure out how to get Grant 15 minutes. 5) Although helped by some goaltending calls, Keita had a very solid game. While Christmas disappears, Keita is starting to become Mr. Dependable.
BuffOrange
Warrick's famous t-bag dunk on Texas was called a charge but in the ultimate "I think we screwed up" hedge they let the basket count. Yah it's unfortunate that Southy & Grant can't really play together, at least not if they want a traditional 1-5 lineup. JB did say Grant would've played more if the game had a faster pace to it fwiw.
Miyagi-Do Karate
Cuse/UConn game.... uh, was that a joke? Why was Triche in that game taking 20 shots and making 3? Why wouldn't we take advantage of our size and go inside to our bigs, instead of trying to just beat their really quick guards off the dribble? We could have posted up Fair the entire game. Instead, we get to see MCW try to out-quick Boatright? Good luck. Very frustrating loss. I place significant blame on the coaching.

The Poojer
Coaching... why was southerland taking all those shots..grant should have taken his place. Miyagi-Do Karate
By the way, who's going to be a better pro-- MCW and or Boatright? I'd put my money on Boatright. Awkward post-game conference, where JB called Katz an "idiot." http://www.syracuse.com/orangebasketball/index.ssf/2013/02/syracuse_basketball_loses_to_u.html
BuffOrange
I'll give JB this much: It's nice to see him be an a-hole to a national reporter for a change instead of just bullying the locals. Banned for a week from Cusefan froum wtf? Don't remember posting anything remotely controversial last night. They have thinner skin than JB. Johnny Hammersticks
29% from the floor total....8% from behind the arc (2/23). I hate to say it, but IMO this team is going to live and die by Brandon Triche....very scary proposition. When he is on, and MCW is allowed to focus on distributing, this team is a contender. Without a significant contribution from Triche, however, this team is VERY mediocre. Trying to keep the faith. BTW....I can't believe Southy wasn't yanked for good after that ridiculous 30 foot jumper with about 25 seconds left on the shot clock. What a joke. Props to Kevin Ollie for coaching a really good game. Great game plan, and his boys were really prepared for this match-up.
Cugalabanza
I only saw the second half, but it was the worst I've seen this year. They looked like a bunch of chuckers out there. No half court offense whatsoever. None of the shots were falling. Plus, nobody could even hold on to the ball. It was laughable.
Miyagi-Do Karate
What is crazy is that against Notre Dame, we saw how the half-court offense should be run--inside out. Get the ball to the bigs on the post, and then work the ball back out. It boggles my mind that Fair doesn't just post up every time down the floor-- the entire defense will collapse on him, leaving other guys open. It is not a legitimate half-court offense to just run some curls, and then try to beat guys one on one. That's the kind of offense you draw up for 3rd graders playing YMCA ball. Johnny Hammersticks
Wasn't able to watch the game tonight. Anybody able to re-cap? I looked at the boxscore and saw that BT stepped up in a big way. Defininitely a lot closer than it should have been, but a win in the big east (especially on the road) is a win. Disappointed to see that Jerami Grant did not have a point.

The Poojer
triche did play very well....seton hall stayed in the game with a bunch of 3's. CJ was lights out again. MCW was fairly solid, in fact the entire team only had 4 total turnovers. It is a shame that Grant is not being used more. Southerland really needs to learn that he's allowed to take shots other than 3's...he is so effective when he goes inside. It was a nice game, the tv made it apparent that it was a big Orange crowd. Nothing earth shattering from the game, just a game that was pretty much in hand for most of the game and the team seemed to be a bit on cruise control, which is nice to be able to do every now and again
bills44
My recap: 1. Another slow start. SHU was up 9 at one point in the first half. Their offense hit the skids for about 5:00 thereafter. 2. Absolutely nothing from Keita or Christmas, on either end. Pretty sure that only 4 SU players had FGs last night. 3. We lose that game without Triche. He was excellent. Great job on the boards by him and MCW 4. No PT at all for Cooney. Not sure why JB thought that giving either of the guards a rest for a few minutes was a bad idea. 5. Grant started, but didn't play much. He didn't look great, and JB yanked him shortly after a missed 3-pter. Don't think he saw the floor after that. JB playing favorites again. This team just isn't very good. Their struggles on the road and in neutral site games doesn't bode well for the NCAAs - they just seem to play down to the level of their opposition away from the Dome. After all, the guy is a pretty good 3 point shooter, but he's no Preston Shumpert for Chrissakes. Needs to diversify his game a little with some mid-range jumpers. I wonder, in a game like this, why JB didn't get Cooney off the bench. I know his play hasn't exactly earned him minutes, but he is inevitibaly going to be relied upon down the stretch to give the team 5-10 minutes per game. Seems like this would have been another good opportunity to get him some burn. Edited February 17, 2013 by Johnny Hammersticks
Miyagi-Do Karate
Thanks for the recaps, guys. Not a great sign, playing like this late in the year. I can see this team grabbing a #3 seed and getting upset in the 1st round by a Vermont-type team again.
