Maguire's Beer Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Lindell's range is right around 53. I think if it was 50-52 he would have let him kick it. If Kolb was still in the game, he probably would have had Lindell kick it. A lot goes into a decision like that. Gailey said he made it because he wanted to put a young QB deep in his own territory and force him into a mistake, which is exactly what happened. Again, though - if we'd run the ball just once in the previous three downs, it provably would have been a 48-50 yard kick. The only reason it was debatable at all is because Chan once again forgot that his running game was far more productive than his spread passing attack.

Well he called a very safe pass to Fred Jackson that could have even gained a first down. Fitz just missed it, and even though Fitz has sucked this year that is a 90% percentage completed pass.
slipkid Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 I said CJ's run put the ball inside the 35, and I was wrong. I was angry about the first and second down calls after that run and let my anger blind me. My bad.
Buffalo Barbarian Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 I know he kicked the game winner today, but if you would rather punt then attempt a 51 yard field goal why keep the kicker on your roster? I say it's time to either get a new kicker or just give the job to Potter. would like to see what the kid can do, maybe start him off doing extra points
Best Player Available Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 would like to see what the kid can do, maybe start him off doing extra points Yea, ease him in and get him ready for the 2015 campaign. Ground breaking special team coaching. Blowing a roster spot to maybe have the guy start off kicking extra points. On the job training Bills style. Brilliant!
bills1960 Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Better question: why is Potter on this team? If he can't even kick it out of the endzone in a dome like AZ then how is he a better KOS than Lindell?
It's in My Blood Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 You punt that ball in that situation 100% of the time. Not even a question. Yea, especially since the opposing kicker just nailed a 61 yarder....
1B4IDie Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 First of all, it blows my mind Chan makes the call to not kick a FG from 53 in OT. Second, why do we have a kick-off specialist that rarely kicks it out of the back of the end zone (like he was kept to do) and a FG kicker that we don't trust to kick from over 50? If a kicker can't consistently hit from 50+ there is should be no place for them in the NFL. This is 100% correct and serves to highlight the **** Sandwiches this franchise feeds to its a fans. The Bills have punted inside their opponents 40 atleast 3 times this season. Pats, 9ers, Cards. It demonstrates a failure in the GM, scouting, Coaching, Special Teams Coaches, and the Kicker and Punter. How an organization can think it is OK to do this in 2012 is unbelievable. If an organization can't get a kicker than can hit 53 yard FGs in perfect weather conditions you have failed at many levels in the organization. It is embarrassing. Lindell's range is right around 53. If your coaching strategy, is "I hope the other team's QB forgets what color jersey he is throwing to" well than, that speaks volumes to the lack of strategy at all. That is not a strategy that is wishful thinking. Its funny Chan thinks he can say that out loud. You punt that ball in that situation 100% of the time. Not even a question. Wow! You punt when inside your opponents 40, 100% of the time? You might want to 1.) Realize its 2012 and kickers have a much greater range than 1982. 2.) Ask Bill belicheat what he thinks about this. That has to be top 10 silliest posts I have ever read.
The Helmet of Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 First of all, if he makes the kick, which is 50/50, the Bills still don't win the game. If he misses, then there's an 80% chance the Bills lose. It was 100% the right call to punt. Second of all, to answer the simplistic question, he is on the team because he is really talented at kicking the football. He's actually a professional kicker. Check his resume, he's actually been doing it for a few years. I love the "WHY is player X on this team" questions. Have you spent 100s and 100s of hours analyzing kicker statistics and abilities? If so, please send the Bills Front Office your detailed report, in no less than 50 pages. Maybe they will cut him and sign the dozens and dozens of kickers that you in your wisdom have determined SHOULD be on the team.
VADC Bills Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Ding ding ding! The punt/kick decision was only a decision in the first place because Chan passed three times from the 35 - with an EMPTY BACKFIELD on 2nd and 3rd downs. There's your problem, right there. Exactly what I was thinking when it was happening. Why not a pitch out or a screen to CJ on second down. The issue is bad play calling. Chan doesn't call plays that set him up for success in these situation. In other words don't tell the world you are going to pass, a play action could work fine. The other issue is that Chan calls plays for the personnel he wishes he had and not for the personnel he has. He must realize Brady or Brees doesn't play on our team.
BuffBill Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 I know he kicked the game winner today, but if you would rather punt then attempt a 51 yard field goal why keep the kicker on your roster? I say it's time to either get a new kicker or just give the job to Potter. He is on the team because he has a 1.000 field goal percentage, not his fault that the Fitz led putrid offense has only given him 3 attempts all year. As far as the field goal that clueless Chan didn't go for, I think in part it was because of the new OT rules and knowing that if the kick misses, they opponent has a kicker who just kicked a 61 yarder and they would have almost been in that range already. Chan is clueless, that Wildcat garbage should have gotten in police charges filed against him, but I thought he made the right call on that play.
Bart Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Poor call by Chan. You have to kick the 53 yarder to win and punting is a losers move in that situation. Reminds me of DJ ball. They had no trouble from 61 so we punt from the 35? Thats playing to win?
Homey D. Clown Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 I know he kicked the game winner today, but if you would rather punt then attempt a 51 yard field goal why keep the kicker on your roster? I say it's time to either get a new kicker or just give the job to Potter. He's on the team because he makes field goals.
HamSandwhich Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 I know he kicked the game winner today, but if you would rather punt then attempt a 51 yard field goal why keep the kicker on your roster? I say it's time to either get a new kicker or just give the job to Potter. Actually, during the game when there was the decision to be made, I instantly said we should punt it and pin them back, if we miss that 53 yarder they get the ball in great position and only need a FG to win. I think it was a good call with how our D had been playing and with a cold QB behind center.
BuffBill Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Better question: why is Potter on this team? If he can't even kick it out of the endzone in a dome like AZ then how is he a better KOS than Lindell? i Agree, since the regular season started the majority of his kickoffs have been returned? I thought the whole reason he was here was because he booted the ball out of the endzone so it couldn't be returned, like he did in the preseason.
