HOUSE Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 (edited) Before they hired Chan Gailey in 2010, the Buffalo Bills reportedly offered their head coaching job to Jim Harbaugh. Gailey is 12-24 in two-plus seasons with Buffalo. Harbaugh is 16-4 with San Francisco. That's the difference between these two coaches: one is a good coach; the other has been a great head coach. Where Harbaugh's team plays like it's hell-bent on being the most dominant group in the game, Gailey's projects the image of a team taking its time and picking its spots in trying to get where it wants to be. Where Gailey apparently has to instill mental toughness in his players, Harbaugh's get theirs seemingly by osmosis. Harbaugh coaches with confidence and attitude; Gailey's style in Buffalo has been more along the lines of constantly having a trick up his sleeve. Gailey's team can exploit a weakness; Harbaugh's can dominate a strength. Snip> http://www.buffaloru...augh-comparison Edited October 4, 2012 by HOUSE

Harbaugh inherited a very good team in terms of talent. San Fran already had a good defense and a solid running game. When Gailey came on board, what did we have?

PatsFanNH Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Why did Harbaugh say no to the Bills? Was it lack of power? didnt like the owner or maybe the GM? or was it something else?
K-9 Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Why did Harbaugh say no to the Bills? Was it lack of power? didnt like the owner or maybe the GM? or was it something else? Good question. But it must have been nice for Harbaugh to make the jump to the pros without even having to move out of his house. GO BILLS!!!
HOUSE Posted October 4, 2012 Author Posted October 4, 2012 Why did Harbaugh say no to the Bills? Was it lack of power? didnt like the owner or maybe the GM? or was it something else? I have heard so many excuses from so many coaches I forget who said what?
Thunderstealer Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Why did Harbaugh say no to the Bills? Was it lack of power? didnt like the owner or maybe the GM? or was it something else? When Ralph trumped Wade and insisted on Johnson over Flutie, it sent quite a shockwave that still can be registered by A-list coaches and candidates.

Yeah, he turned down the Fins' job as well. IMO, he is the best coach in football for being able to win with Alex Smith. That said, I have a hard time believing they are a championship team with Smith leading them. It's pretty much my only hope for Sunday.
starrymessenger Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 There are two differences: Jim's a douche: Chan's a nice man. Jim's a great HC: Chan is a great OC.
GG Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 To be fair to Gailey, this is not quite an apples to apples comparison. Harbaugh inherited a very good team in terms of talent. San Fran already had a good defense and a solid running game. Yet he immediately took a team to 13-3 that went 6-10 the year before, and struggled to get to 8 wins in prior two seasons. But it's not about the coaching.

San Fran already had a good defense and a solid running game. When Gailey came on board, what did we have? Good lord I read this all the time, like the Bills had no talent anywhere on their roster when Gailey got here. The Bills had Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson. Lynch motivated in Seattle is a 1200+ yard a year rusher along with 12 TD's and he runs like a Mack truck. Fred Jackson is like a Jaguar who is so elusive he makes the first tackler miss and breaks the second, and could easily equal what Lynch has done if he had stayed healthy. The Bills had a better running game then the 49ers.This regime decided to draft another RB (Spiller) "waterbug" in 2010 with that #1 pick, a guy who sat on the bench for most of his first 2 years, and still isn't the starter. The biggest problem the Bills offense was they needed a LT to replace JP who they traded away. they finally drafted his replacement in 2012 in Cordy Glenn. Why it took them 3 years, i don't know! They also needed a RT in 2010 and still don't have a top RT or RG. For the defense the Bills have needed a top pass rusher since Aaron Schobel retired in 09. They were the #19 defense, and San Fran was the #15 defense in 2009. Jauron swung and missed with Aaron Maybin and yet the Redskins picked right after the Bills and hit a home run with Brian Arakpo. Anyway, Nix finally addressed the pass rush by adding super Mario and Mark Anderson in 2012, why it took 3 years, again I don't know Gailey /. Nix have made a multitude of boneheaded personnel / scheme / assistant errors along their 12-24 run so far in Buffalo. The 49ers have a great coaching staff, while the Bills have a mediocre to bad coaching staff. However, Lets not forget what Nix had to go thru just to get Chan Gailey to come to Buffalo
DrDawkinstein Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Why did Harbaugh say no to the Bills? Was it lack of power? didnt like the owner or maybe the GM? or was it something else? Sometimes it's not as complex as we make it. He graduated High School in the Bay Area. He was coaching at Stanford. Plenty of folks could see the writing on the wall for Singletary. I'm sure there were plenty of other factors that were considered, but I believe most of it had to do with staying in the area.

Believe it or not, I was able to spend 30 minutes with Joe Theisman one-on-one two weeks ago and he said the Bills were the worst franchise in the league, hands down. He says there is no leadership from the two most important positions - QB and Head coach. He said until something changes there, the team will be terrible. Your point on confidence/cockiness is crutial. These positions need to be leaders.

Not on the fact that you talked to Joe Theismann (you have my sympathies for having to endure that) but on what he had to say regarding Fitz and Gailey. I can believe there isn't unanimous buy-in by the team on Gailey's game plans or Fitz's ability certainly, but I've heard from the players themselves how well-liked and respected both men are on and off the field by everyone in that locker room. Theismann (rhymes with HEES-man) can shove it. GO BILLS!!!

The Talent is there i don't think anyone denies that. It's somewhat scary that the coach needs to instill mental toughness in his players. Take some time and youtube or NFL video some of the post game speeches Harbaugh makes. That guy is filled with passion. I get a ho hum feeling when hear Fitz or Gailey speak. There is nothing there. Think back to when Levy was coach and how fast he chewed is gum or chewed out a player/ref. he was a true coach in my opinion. The same thing with Kelly. He got mad when he threw a pick or he would shout at his teammates. I don't see any of this from our current players. I see nothing. Fitz throws a pick and sits on the bench. The only player on the Bills team that shows any kind of emotion is Stevie. Fitz missed him wide open on a number of occassions and he was mad, frustrated, etc..... The Bills do not have a leader in the locker room. Gailey maybe a offensive genius but he lacks in emotion if you ask me. I also do not like that he doesn't really pay attention to defense all that much.

That's all well and good but it doesn't address what my post did: that Theisman (rhymes with HEES-man) is full of crap when he asserts that nobody respects Gailey or Fitz. I know personally that's not true. That's why I'm calling bullsh*t on what he said. It's easy to say we have good players but any rational analysis sees the Bills are severely lacking at some key positions. QB- needs upgrade WR- needs upgrade LB- needs MAJOR upgrades SS- needs MAJOR upgrades CB- young and inexperienced and it will take awhile. Love our Oline. Love our Dline. Hate our back 7. I'm sorry but the idea that we would have a better W/L record if the players respected Gailey more just doesn't make sense to me. That's not saying Gailey is always a good enough coach or that Wanny is either for that matter. Wanny screwed the pooch something fierce on Sunday, we all saw that. And the major reason was he didn't trust his talent well enough to play them and the talent he did trust was not up to the task in Scott, Wilson, Barnett, and Rogers most glaringly. GO BILLS!!!
HOUSE Posted October 4, 2012 Author Posted October 4, 2012 It appears to me that the teams problem is way deeper then players. Get out the popcorn guys this can't happen much longer. This is suppose to be a playoff team. Don't care how good the 49ers are, buffalo is suppose to be in every game and its just not happening.
Tcali Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 We shoulda spent 100 million on Jim Harbaugh....not on the grossly overrated Mario.
