MDH Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 Hindsight is 20/20.... Dalton isn't really a hindsight pick. There were lots of writers who sung Dalton's praises and thought the kid would be a steal in the late first, early 2nd. Of course, his biggest flaw is his lack of a cannon arm so I'm sure people on here would kill him for it.
ALLEN1QB Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 Thought we should have drafted him in the first place.
Fan in Chicago Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 see we do agree when i narrow down your point to this one word. trent had it, too. all i'm suggesting is that after one game we all hold off the superlatives and not yet buy into all the hype. it was one game. one. it was not the super bowl. he's not headed into the hall of fame just yet. i don't even know if the comparisons to RGIII are fair. good god, it was one game. jw I absolutely agree that it is too early to judge CK. What I did like about him yesterday is that he was no overwhelmed while making his first start and that too on national TV. Even if you remove this aspect, his accuracy and arm strength was very impressive. After the first half itself I was wondering if Alex Smith is going to be Bledsoed by Colin's Brady act. I hear NoSaint saying that Harbaugh of all people should know what he has in terms of QB and had kept ASmith as starter. But sometimes, the backup does not get enough reps or game time to showcase his skills. Sometimes players are just superlative in-game players. IMHO, CK did enough for the entire nation to sit up and take notice. He deserves consideration to challenge Smith as I have believed since last season that Smith is holding that talent-laden franchise back (despite his heroics against the Saints last January). Again, it is way too early to see how CK holds up after opposing Ds game plan for him and how he plays when down a few points, when he is rushed repeatedly etc. But early returns are encouraging and I would place my bet on him seeing significant playing time the rest of this season with the intent to deciding the starter for next year and beyond.
ALLEN1QB Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 He was there when we took Aaron Williams. Way to go Buddy!!
PromoTheRobot Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 Well it's not hindsight to state that lots of people here wanted the Bills to draft Kaepernick when he was available. Yes we wanted Kaepernick...and Wilson...and Cousins....and Tannehill....and Weeden....and Osweiler....and Foles...and Locker....and Gabbert....and Ponder...and Dalton...and Mallett...and Terrelle Pryor...and Tebow...and Clausen...and Colt McCoy...and Kafka...and Skelton...etc. PTR
BillsBytheBay Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 So, we should trade for a QB that was just drafted in the second round because there are never any QB's worth drafting after the middle of the first round? Am I understanding that correctly? I belive he was speaking of this draft. Not generally. And I agree. Not the best QB options this year, even if you in the top 10 picks.

The fans, and now even Nix, admit that we need an upgrade at QB. It is the FO's job to look ahead and look for deficiencies and attempt to fill them. They have failed to do so in 3 offseasons. I was not advocating any one QB over the other before any draft. But I do think it is the job of our talent scouts and FO to evaluate draftees much more so than the regular fans can. Dalton stuck out as an example of one we missed. Early indications are that Wilson and Kaepernick may also join that list. Again, what are you trying to say ?
BillsBytheBay Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 He was there when we took Aaron Williams. Way to go Buddy!! Williams had a first round grade to few "experts". At the time it made sense. We needed a DB. Mckelvin was sucking, McGee was hurt, and we lost the only good corner we had the year before to the saints.

Just, not the guy you think we shoulda got.

The fans always wanted every QB that has ever been draft eligible. Sorry, I don't buy the "it's not hind sight, I liked him before" argument. I don't hear any one saying it was a mistake not to draft Clausen, McCoy, Kolb, Gabbert, ect... But of course they would be if they all of the sudden had a great game. This is about whether the FO was truly correct that there was no upgrade available near our pick positions.
zow2 Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 Let's see what Kaepernick can do once the leagues defensive coordinators build a database on him. He looked great last night, but can he be consistently good? we'll see.

This is about whether the FO was truly correct that there was no upgrade available near our pick positions. So across 3 whole drafts, they missed out on taking a risk and guessing correctly on 3 of the 50(?) QBs. But they were right about the other 47. Not a bad batting average.

Fan in Chicago Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 (edited) So across 3 whole drafts, they missed out on taking a risk and guessing correctly on 3 of the 50(?) QBs. But they were right about the other 47. Not a bad batting average. Can't we do this for just about any position ? And you are saying that the Bengals, 49ers, Seahawks are better that QB evaluation than the Bills ? You are excusing the FO for not knowing which QB had the potential to be significantly better than Fitz ? Which is of course much easier to determine with the amazing powers of hindsight... Then why evaluate any front office ? why fire any GM or college scout ? Can't each and every incompetent, out of work GM claim that he did the best he could at the time ? It is their job to know who is a talent worth drafting. And what we are doing here is performance evaluation. Which happens in every organization every year. An understanding of what the individual did well and what he has to work on in the coming year. An assessment of whether past mistakes are serious enough for a demotion or a firing. This is not hindsight. The good organizations get things done. And Nix has failed at setting us in the most important position. I am not using this argument as a blanket criticism of his regime. Arguably, he has made some very good decisions in retaining and letting go players. But for the QB position, he has failed so far. Edited November 20, 2012 by Fan in Chicago
FLFan Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 And why exactly does anyone think SF would trade him? After the game, Harbaugh indicated he may start ahead of Smith next week. SF has no big committment to Smith and drafted Kaepernick 36th overall. He is not going anywhere. Williams had a first round grade to few "experts". At the time it made sense. We needed a DB. Mckelvin was sucking, McGee was hurt, and we lost the only good corner we had the year before to the saints. Also, while people are understandably down on Williams as he has had a tough second year, he looked great last year and everyone was saying what a steal he was. Way to early to give up on Williams, and yes, the Bills did need a CB. Guess what folks, they will again this year. McGee is done and McKelvin is likely gone.

Because he's performing at an all pro level on ST's ? Williams IMO is lost as a CB, move to safety or cut the cord. McK has outperformed AW at CB as well in his limited duty IMO.

I seriously doubt that Mckelvin is a high prioity for the Bills. He is only on the field at DB because of injuries. I doubt he will stay for what will likely be a fairly low offer, suitable to a return specialist and backup cornerback. He has had 5 years to prove himself at DB and has not. Williams is young, under contract, and has more potential.

Crappy corners are a dime a dozen. he's a first round pick playing well on ST in a contract year. I'd help him pack his locker, and pack it to the bus. He's replaceable for what he was drafted for. A lot of people wanted him cut last year, as he's always a liability in coverage. Also,he doesn't have the gas left in the tank to be a special teams player for 4-5 years.
