Optometric Insight Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Does this work anymore or have any benefit to the team calling the timeout? I heard a stat in the Dolphins game that there's a 3% increase in Field Goals made when a timeout is called before the kick. Looking at the Dolphins game, you could say it still works and you can say it doesn't. But does it really?
Just Jack Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Well, since the Dolphins lost due to trying to ice the kicker, I'd say no it doesn't work.
Astrojanitor Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 I can see it working more for longer kicks. Anything under maybe 40 yards I consider it pointless. But with the leg needed to boot one in from like 50, I can see it being worth the risk to make them do it twice in a row.
DC Grid Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 I think as everyone is expecting it, coaches are best off pretending they will do it but not calling a timeout. I keep seeing missed and blocked kicks on first tries before timeouts because the offense is treating it like a dry run.
TakeYouToTasker Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 It's the worst play in football, and should be banned.
Dragonborn10 Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Agree with DC Grid, pretend to call the time out and then rush like usual.
biglukes Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Lindell always says that he doesn't mind being iced at all. Says it gives him more time to get set up.
djp14150 Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Actually its smart to pretend you will because they expect you to...so some OL may not be playing full because they expect the time out. In Ot NO did not call a time out against KC
drinkTHEkoolaid Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Icing is a dumb strategy and more often then not does not work or backfires. But the few times it works the coach is made to be a genius. And most kickers who are asked prefer to be iced
MRW Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 It's a coach CYA move. I don't think there's really any evidence that it has an impact on the game one way or the other, but if you don't ice the kicker and he makes it, you will be fielding a lot of annoying postgame questions. It is one of the most irritating (non-)plays in football, though. Wouldn't mind seeing the ability for coaches to call timeout removed, which is the only way I can think of to get rid of this move.
Ramius Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Its an immature, childish tactic. It was hilarious that the fins got burned by their own coach's asinine decision.
NoSaint Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Lindell always says that he doesn't mind being iced at all. Says it gives him more time to get set up. And if he's smart, he should say the opposite of what he wants. If it bothered him, I doubt he would tell the media
Hapless Bills Fan Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Well, since the Dolphins lost due to trying to ice the kicker, I'd say no it doesn't work. I would agree, for values of "doesn't work" equal to "epic fail". Icing arguably cost the d-phins the game. Sexy Rexy was ear-to-ear smiles.

It's likely less about the actual timeout and more about the "will they" factor. Id imagine not having a blatant tendency is the only way that you have any advantage in that situation - which means you have to call it sometimes.
Fezmid Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 During the Dolphins/Jets game, the announcer said that kickers make it 70% of the time when they're not iced, and 73% of the time when they are iced. So no, it doesn't do anything.
Buffalo Barbarian Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Cant believe we lost to the Jets, those guys are terrible, we must have gotten our blowout game early.
Nanker Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Cant believe we lost to the Jets, those guys are terrible, we must have gotten our blowout game early. From your lips to Gosh's ears.
NoSaint Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Cant believe we lost to the Jets, those guys are terrible, we must have gotten our blowout game early. The leagues so close. A couple lucky bounces, calls, or close your eyes and hope you make it plays and suddenly anyone can win huge. Even just a player or two that happens to matchup well
Fan in San Diego Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Well, since the Dolphins lost due to trying to ice the kicker, I'd say no it doesn't work. That was funny, the kick was blocked but Miami had called a TO. DOH!
