3rdand12 Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 For the most part that is how he has been used I believe, however, he is very athletic and I believe ran in the 4.6's for his 40. He certainly fits the wildcat mold. Alright then. But that means he has to be the #3 qb by rule to get on the field i think. So where does that leave us? Get rid of B Smith next year keep T J as #3 and bring in a rookie trainee franchise prospect at #2?
Simon Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 I haven't had nearly enough of Brad Smith. I hope he gets more touches going forward.

Get rid of B Smith next year keep T J as #3 and bring in a rookie trainee franchise prospect at #2? T-Jack has a better career passer rating than Thigpen (by about 7 points) as well as more yards etc. So yeah, get rid of B Smith and Thigpen next year (Hopefully 1 this year). This very well could be the plan. Then hopefully we can finally bring in a QB that has legitimate potential to be elite and develop him.
djp14150 Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Bowe next year. He flogged us for 100+ yards. Wish he had been signed this year! When it was 35-3.... Doesn't mean much.
Miyagi-Do Karate Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 It's just weird. Look at Smith's highlight reel with the Jets. He looks like a completely different player--confident, fast, hitting the hole, breaking tackles, even throwing a few passes. He looks nothing like that with us, and I don't get it.

You have 39 posts and still seem a reasonable person. so how long can we keep Thigpen? For all the discussion about Brad Smith his salary and a roster spot, isnt Tyler or Jackson someone that should be first to shove off? I mean no offense to any player. But why carry 2 backup qbs at a couple million each. If you are correct that VJ is in the plan then we should sooner lose Tyler for thsoe that wish some savings for levitre and byrd and who ever else we need sign soon and the vaulted roster spot. When it was 35-3.... Doesn't mean much. I would not mind Bowe one bit. Great target and power.

Thanks. I would be all for getting rid of Thigpen, but for now we pretty much would have nobody who could legitimately run an offense behind Fitz. T-Jack isn't up to speed on the offense yet and that seems like it might be a while. Brad Smith is an absolute emergency situation 3rd stringer. Therefore, we have to keep Thigpen until T-Jack is up to speed. I would be for a plan to dump Thiggy over Smith when T-Jack is up to speed for sure. We must keep in mind that Nix gave up a draft pick for T-Jack. He is in the future plans as we know Nix covets his draft picks. I don't think this is the case, but I pray to God they don't think he is a project for Gailey to turn into the starter if Fitz doesn't work out. He needs to be the backup/wildcat and then bring in a high level prospect next year for development.
3rdand12 Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 timeline for Tavaris to get up to speed? If you would hazard a guess. Seems to be no hurry. i read that he has been running the scout offense. But that's Gailey style and he is a wiley old goat. I expect Smith to be here the duration and reevaluate post season. I'm a Smith guy. for now.

If I were forced to guess, I would go 8 weeks until T-Jack is somewhat serviceable.
QCity Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Ron Brooks is eligible to return from short-term IR after 6 weeks, which means our Bye week will be the end of the Tyler Thigpen era.
ralphybaby Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 He only gets on the field for a handfull of plays. The kick return game is no longer an important part of the NFL. The wildcat seems to be just a diversion and not a real yard gainer. Smith at reciever in my mind is as good as Roosevelt. I know Chan likes his versatility, but come on. That money could be spent on another quality reciever or an actual back up quarterback option. If Brad Smith has to come in to play our qb position, the year is over. Thoughts? The Bills version of the wildcat is a big JOKE! Smith hands the ball off to Spiller. They're paying Smith a couple mill a year to hand the ball off to Spiller in the wildcat. Fitz can hand if off to Spiller and they wouldn't need Smith. That would save them a couple mill.
CarolinaBill Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Enough with the calls for freakin Naaman Roosevelt, seriously, he's not that good. I understand that he played @ UB and that makes him a hometown favorite, but for pete's sake give it a rest. He hasnt been picked up or even given a tryout by ANY OTHER team in the NFL. Brad Smith is a versatile player that can line up in several different packages and be used effectively, even if its as a decoy. He still provides more use than a 5th WR/ST player that been sitting at home since cuts were made.

I think Rosie has upside on his side. The hypothetical argument won't work, we kept stevie because they saw enough to keep, Roosevelt, not so much. Look, I get it, you have a soft spot for the locals, but trying to say we should keep an undrafted, undersized, ST player over a sought after free agent going into yr 2 is nuts.
Doc Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 They should work Brad Smith exclusively at WR, shelve the Wildcat mostly, and have Fitz run more, especially early in games, so that teams know he won't just sit back in the pocket (anymore) and give them something else to think about\/have to defend.
Webster Guy Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Had a fairly decent catch on Sunday. Yeah it was more than fairly decent. It was the best footwork/toe tappin/hands outstretchin/firstDownGettin grab I've seen in a long time. If he can make catches like that I would start him as the 3rd wideout over TJ. Stevie is playing very lukewarm anyway, not a great time to be dumping receivers that know the playbook and have good hands. I honestly didn't think he was capable of catches like that. If anything I would dump Johnny White back to practice squad and bring in Easley or Namaan just for depth at the position. It would have been good to have one of those guys playing in garbage time at the home opener.
Maybe Someday Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 I love all the cut Brad Smith now posts that offer no reasoning at all besides some form of he sucks. At least give a plan/idea on how cutting a player will benefit the team. Keep in mind we have plenty of cap space, it’s not your money and his salary for this year is already guaranteed. I’m a Brad Smith fan. He adds another dimension to our offense and keeps making plays. Sure he’s not an all pro player but he’s a nice role player to have. That catch on Sunday is about as difficult a catch as you’ll see. Give the wildcat more time…it starts out basic and then adds in wrinkles as time goes by. Brad hits a long TD pass in a critical game and people will change their tune. Just having that possibility adds another thing for the defense to worry about.
HeHateMe Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Brad Smith... almost The Wildcat... YES!

Brad hits a long TD pass in a critical game and people will change their tune. Just having that possibility adds another thing for the defense to worry about. See what you did there? It's no different than some people saying Brad Smith should be cut because he sucks. He has never done what you say will change our tunes so what evidence do you have to support him on this team? A few catches doesn't deserve a roster spot IMO but you are correct, his contract is now guaranteed and it would be pointless to cut him now. He really isn't any good for us. He has about 3 plays like he had on Sunday that deserve praise but the rest are easily attainable by our other RBs or WRs we have on the roster. I get the whole, "he's versitle" arguement but he not any good at any of the positions he plays. Dare I sat with more playing time some young prospect like Roosevelt or Easley would be better. Of course it's not a guarantee, but Smith hasn't really shown much to prove his worth. Certainly not $4m a years worth. But hey, it's not my money. I only pay for season tickets, countless hundreds on parking, countless thousands in tailgate essentials, booze for the tailgate, booze in the stadium, jerseys and other Bills memorabilia, countless hundreds in gas to travel back and forth to St John Fischer to watch pointless practices, hundreds of hours that I waste in sick days and vacation days at work to go to games or watch games, and an infinate amount of hours I spend reading about this team, watching this team, spend on this site and post. I don't feel like it's a wste at all ;-) When they start winning going to the playoffs, I'll stop questioning some of the questionable descisions they make and just trust they will do the right things.
