Kelly the Dog
Thanks, folks. Keep 'em coming. I watched the youtube full length Doug Stanhope video that rocked. I'd seen a bit of him before but this was just good, serious, really raunchy ruthless stuff. A great talent. Is there anyone out there that likes Dane Cook? How is it possible that the guy is arguably the most popular comedian in the country and I have yet to meet one person out of 200 that likes him. Kelly the Dog
I've never heard him before but everything I hear is positive. I need to check him out Hicks was very, very good. He was known as a guy who was a lot of the comedians' favorite comedian. Extremely smart, daring, ruthless, and good at his craft. He was a bigger star in Europe and especially the UK than he was here, partly because he criticized America. There is a famous or infamous incident where he went on Letterman a few months before he died of cancer, and Letterman decided to cut out the entire segment before it aired because of some controversial material Hicks used. Years later, Letterman felt so bad about it, and watched the segment over and over, and couldn't believe he acted that way because he didn't find the material objectionable at all, but rather brilliant. So he invited Hicks' mom on the show, apologized profusely for being stupid, and then showed the segment on that episode. It was a pretty cool thing for Letterman to do after making a bad mistake. You can watch the Letterman segments on youtube.
Pete
George Carlin- brilliant, funny as hell, and spot on in his political rants. See his "American Dream" rant for proof Bill Hicks-great political commentary and he too is spot on in his rants. The most ripped off comedian ever Mitch Hedberg- best one liners ever. His delivery was epic and he slays me every time he comes up on shuffle

I don't think there is a person who really follows comedy who has any patience for him or Carlos Mencia for those reasons. They are like comedy cover bands...comedy for people who don't like comedy. Alphadawg7
I need to know who the general public really likes as a stand-up these days, and what strikes you about them and their act or schtick, for a project I'm doing. Please be as specific as possible, and maybe a link to a favorite bit. You're not held to this, and you can name more than three, but as a guideline, perhaps list one headliner, one up and comer or rising star, and one old standard you always found funny. Comediennes, too, if possible. EDIT: And yes, i did just find the old thread on stand-ups from a few months ago. Please add your favorites again if you want. This is easy...well if you are talking about guys who are alive and still performing. 1. Louis C.K. - I just saw him live last Friday at The Comedy Store on Sunset in Hollywood and he did not disappoint! He is hilarious! 2. Daniel Tosh - Forget about Tosh.0 (which I do enjoy), he has been crushing the live standup scene for a decade now. I have been following him long before Tosh.0 and he is way better live! I have seen him live 6 times, and each time my face hurt from laughing. I could make a case for him being #1...him and Louis are like 1a and 1b. 3. Kevin Hart - This guy in stand up is hilarious! I have seen him live twice and his specials have been great too! I actually played poker with him in a small NL Hold Em tournament at the Hustler Casino in LA about 2 years ago. He was at my table and I can say he is just genuinely hilarious and a very nice and humble guy too. Honorable Mention: Chris Rock - His moves blow, he has not done a special in a bit, but when he does one and does his stand up he kills it! Up and Comer: Anthony Jeselnik - Most people know him from the last few Roasts on Comedy Central, but this kid was hilarious live. Took my girl to see him in May at the Irvine Improv for a special and we were not disappointed. Edited September 25, 2012 by Alphadawg7
