IDBillzFan
I read someone opened fire on a school bus in Chicago as well. Not to mention someone is shooting a teenage black child like every 30 minutes or so. On the upside, it's just blacks shooting blacks. According to the media, shooting a black teenager only matters if the shooter is a white hispanic. Chicago will have to wait, though. Rahm is off to collect money for Obama for a while. B-Man
Wouldn't basic journalism require this in the story...........................................Rhetorical question Chicago Teachers May Strike on Monday; News Coverage Doesn't Disclose Their Current Pay, Initial Demands Less than 48 hours from now, Chicago's teachers, whose union head insists, as quoted by the Associated Press, that "we are here to negotiate for better schools in Chicago," may walk off the job, leaving the children entrusted to them to languish in half-days of activities unrelated to learning "staffed by non-union and central office workers." There seems to be an unwritten rule that news coverage of these matters not discuss the current earnings of those who are threatening to strike. In a writeup of over 900 words, AP writers Tammy Webber and Don Babwin stuck to that script, and also failed to tell their readers the size of the raise union negotiators initially requested. ... A Chicago Public Schools spokesperson said average pay for teachers, without benefits, is $76,000. But a Teachers Union attorney said the number provided by CPS doesn’t tell the whole story. ... By comparison, teachers in New York City earn an average of $73,751. That would be less than the average $76,000 average salary for Chicago teachers cited by CPS, but more than the $71,000 average cited by the union. Depending on which is accurate, Chicago would either be first or second in the nation in average teacher salary. Chicago Teachers Union Demands 30 Percent Pay Raise It takes a lot of nerve to ask for a 30 percent pay raise. You’d better be sure you had a banner year. Yet in Chicago, where just 15 percent of fourth graders are proficient in reading (and just 56 percent of students graduate), the teachers union is set to strike if the district does not agree to a 30 percent increase in teachers’ salaries. The average teacher in Chicago Public Schools—a district facing a $700 million deficit—makes $71,000 per year before benefits are included. If the district meets union demands and rewards teachers with the requested salary increase, education employees will receive compensation north of $92,000 per year. The AP pair wouldn't tell its readers how much Chicago's teachers currently earn. That also goes for the Tribune story just cited, as well as this morning's Chicago Sun-Times story, where Rosalind Rossi notes that "the union is 'standing firm' on the 12:01 a.m. Monday deadline and will not ask delegates to push back the strike date." Especially in a state and city which have both become fiscal basket cases, readers trying to evaluate the reasonableness of the union's demands need to know what members now earn. It's irresponsible journalism not to disclose that information. One can't help but think that part of the motivation for non-disclosure has to do with the fact that many journalists are also members of unions. http://newsbusters.org/blogs/tom-blumer/2012/09/08/chicago-teachers-may-strike-monday-news-coverage-doesnt-disclose-their-c#ixzz25tOXfNxe

IDBillzFan
The real problem is your vitriol towards your fellow middle class teachers. Remember when your brave new leader Mitt Romney called for an end to the politics of envy, division and class warfare? It ain't the teachers, Sherlock. It's the teacher unions. But I understand how you would get the two confused because "Teachers! FIrefighters! Police! Thiink about the children! Racism!" is a broken record always playing in broken minds. BiggieScooby
Unions are the #1 reason jobs are being outsourced. What about the call center jobs? call center employees are not unionized, it guys were never unionized. Could it just be U.S. multinational's looking for cheap labor? What do CEOs, make in China? Perhaps we can outsource some of ours. Edited September 9, 2012 by BiggieScooby
Doc
What about the call center jobs? call center employees are not unionized, it guys were never unionized. Could it just be U.S. multinational's looking for cheap labor? I'll need verification that call center employees are not unionized, but even if they're not, unions have raised wages even for non-unionized employees. And everyone's looking to pay the least for something, from consumers to businesses. What do CEOs, make in China? Perhaps we can outsource some of ours. If the teachers don't watch it, they might be outsourced.

No one hates teachers...and no matter how many times you say it out loud, it just doesn't make it true. The problem is the union. On the upside, these days unions rank in popularity somewhere at the back of the line behind Adam Sandler movies, Occupy protesters, and using the word "meh." Including call centers.

Its not like these are minimum wage burger flippers or Walmart greeters. This is where you are wrong. While a good amount of teachers may be worth their pay, there are many who couldn't successfully fill a position flipping burgers and their teachers union protects them allowing them to "teach" your offspring, and perpetuate t5he dumbness cycle you have been caught up in. ExiledInIllinois
Come on all you conservatives... Don't be envious of the union guy just trying to make a buck and support their family. Practice what you preach... Listen to Ms. Condoleezza Rice and what she said... Your problems are NOT caused by somebody doing better than you! How can you begrudge the rank and file... Lift them up past where you are at... More power to 'em... The union is not the cause of people doing bad... Pull yourself up by the bootstraps... Don't get mad at somebody's success! 35k a year to start out as a teacher and 60k on average in this day and age is not a lot to ask for considering how important teachers are.
