  • Two guys used to own the Spirits of St. Louis, a basketball team in the old ABA
  • When the ABA merged with the NBA in 1976, St. Louis was not invited. To head off a lawsuit, they settled with the NBA for one-seventh of the television money generated annually by each of the four surviving A.B.A. teams — the Nets, the San Antonio Spurs, the Indiana Pacers and the Denver Nuggets - FOREVER!!!
  • So far, that has generated them $255 million
  • Now, they're in court again, and they say that this also applies to the teams' share for television money generated overseas by the NBA, cable TV, NBA-TV, etc.
  • And it looks like they will win, and maybe get another $300 million

It pays to understand where the world is going.

It's always amazing to look back and see how some people capitalized on advancements like TV, internet, etc. while others who were in a position to do so completely missed the boat.

Desi Arnaz. The networks didn't want to use film for I Love Lucy, because it was too expensive. Arnaz offered to cover the extra cost, in return for keeping all rights to the film.

Then he invented reruns and syndication.

Then the networks said "D'oh!"

I work for a company that invented the mouse but thought it was useless and sold the patent to Steve Jobs.

Not to mention in the same city someone "invented" digital photography and was told it was a nice idea, don't tell anyone about it, we'll make more money on film. That company has since filed for bankruptcy.
