In the early sixties, one of my uncles took us to the Monroe Co. Fairgrounds to see the Friday night stock car races. One of the cars flipped over on a turn. Uncle hops over the wire fence, opens his jackknife and cuts the rope that tied the driver's door down and gets him out. Those were the days.

Yeah as a tyke in the mid sixties I lived near lake Placid, NY and there was a dirt track just about in our backyard. Local rivalries where so Strong there would be fights in the stands over which driver cheated who. As you say different day's. Not sure I even remember a fence. Unlimited CI injected Alcohol burning cars thowing dirt all over the crowd. What a blast!!

There's three dirt tracks in the Syracuse area...

Brewerton Speedway

http://www.brewertonspeedway.com/

Fulton Speedway

http://www.fultonspeedway.com/

Weedsport Speedway

(though it appears closed) http://www.dirttrackdigest.com/DTD/index.php?/topic/45400-weedsport-speedway-reopening-wednesday-oct-3rd/

And there's talk of a new track being constructed near Central Square...

Love it at the 2:49 mark the courtesy Ford dragging a gas can on the track. Notice the sponsors on the cars. Joe's garage, Smith Chevrolet ,etc. Not the UPS, Lowe's, Budweiser stuff you see today.

Racing was far more real in those day's. Not the pretty boys you see today that can't change a tire but look good on TV.

"Rupert Safety Belts". Wonder what they're up to these days?
