NFLPA agree to new IR rule and Trade deadline

Why not cut McGee and give someone with a possible future in this league his roster spot. No one else is signing an old corner with a bum knee. We can always resign him when he's healthy if we miss him . Remember if he makes the final 53 man roster on Monday his salary for this year is guaranteed.

Why not get rid of IR and allow players to be placed on the PUP list at any time, having to wait at least 6 games before getting a chance to be activated?

Shhh that is too much common sense. The NFL should have some reserve list like baseball does where you must be on the a long term DL to free up another spot for a minor leaguer/ PS'er

The savvy vet came off the sideline cold and was our best corner for the few games he played last year. You bet he would be signed even for a few games of productivity by a playoff team with a corner injury or two.

A few more details on how it works:

Each team can only bring back one player during the season. One key part of the rule that has been overlooked: That player has to be "designated for return" at the time he's placed on IR. In short, teams can't wait and see what players recover faster.

You have to make the final roster first. Only players who were placed on IR after Tues. Sept. 4th will be eligible to be reactivated. Not sure on how long must a player be on IR before he can be reactivated.

In future years, only players that are placed on IR after teams make their cuts to a 53-man roster will be eligible. For this year only, the league made an exception to the rule because initial roster cuts have already started. The Green Bay Packers, for instance, could "reactivate" linebacker Desmond Bishop from IR before Aug. 31 at 9 p.m. ET. Bishop must remain on the Packers' 53-man roster through the league-mandated cutdown period and would then be eligible for the roster exemption.

Do we have anybody already on IR besides Troup?
