Punch Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 Supposedly Ralphy and Cookie made amends a just a couple days before Cookie passed, but not sure you can totally put decades of ill feelings behind you in a day or two. Saban, will never get on the wall while Ralph is alive and somewhat kicking, but will probably go up before Ralph's body is cold when he does pass, and deservedly so. Not downplaying anything Cookie did for the BIlls, but he did only play for 3 seasons, great ones at that, but still just 3 seasons. Every year there's a lobby for Cookie and Saban by the Wall of Fame selection committee and every year it's rejected. It's interesting that Lou Saban and Cookie Gilchrist were always at odds with one another--- to the point that Cookie was traded--- yet here they are, 2 of the greatest Bills of all-time seemingly forever united not due to their accomplishments on the field but because they pissed off Ralph.
hondo in seattle Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 Im not a big fan of putting every player who has had a modicum of success on a team's "Wall." IMHO, that stuff is for the all time greats and legends. The few really standout players....not every one who had a good career or just a few good years with the team. Beebe and Fina? You cant be serious +1 I think OJ made McKenzie look great moreso than the other way around. IMHO, the Wall of Fame is for the great, not for the very good.
Luxy312 Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 (edited) McKenzie isn't on the wall because he simply wasn't a great player. He was good, but certainly not a game changer or completely dominant at his position. To a degree, I would almost like to see the "wall of fame" concept changed. I would like to see an all-time roster, with backups at every position. McKenzie would probably be on that list because he's one of the best we had at his position. Certainly not the best in the NFL none the less. Edited August 30, 2012 by Luxy312
Marv's Neighbor Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 Cookie Gilchrist & Lou Saban should be first. Its really a joke. Freakin Ralph. Agreed!

True, and not only was Cookie traded at one point he was kicked off the team until the team lobbied for Saban to let him back on the team. Nowadays in the NFL, if he were to be kicked off the team, another team would have signed him before he got out of the door.
Wagon Circler Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 Probably because he was not even the best guard on that team. Joe D has that distinction. Still he should probably get that honor. Cannot agree with Cookie. as great as he was, he was only around for what, three years? Saban is a definite, but he quit twice on Ralph, so....

Furthermore, we are talking about the Bills Wall of Fame, not the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Edited August 30, 2012 by LabattBlue
tedstrong Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 THANK YOU! I've been asking this question for years! There should be a groundswell of support for this. Reggie Mac was awesome!!!
tedstrong Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 BTW- if you don't think Reggie Mac was dominant, remember that he was the primary pulling guard against all comers league wide when OJ went 6/carry, most years either side and up through Cribbs. Plus two all pro years. He may be overshadowed because that whole line was stellar- no offense to Joe D.
