Can't they put McGee on the PUP list for the first 6 weeks, keep Thigpen and Jackson and Smith. Then when McGe comes back cut one of those 3 guys..? By then Jackson would have had 7 or 8 weeks in the system and we should know by then if he is better than Thigpen or not.

Exactly. Who are we keeping in place of smith? Thigpen? Jarron Gilbert? I dont undertsand the hate for this guy

Keep 2 QBs, you don't have to carry 3. One goes down you sign someone and hope that they don't have to play the position. (that's the same feeling I would have about Smith...I sure hope we don't have to count on him playing QB.

And hate? Where is hate? This is a healthy discussion about a fringe player who can play several positions less than adequately.

Would you want to count on him as your QB? No.

Would you want to count on him as a receiver? No.

Would you want to count on him as a RB? No.

Would you want to count on him as a returner? No.

Unless you can answer yes to one of those questions then why keep him on the team?

Right, so you cut Smith and keep another, probably a developmental guy at WR or maybe CB.

Point is who is soooooo important, that Smith is occupying their spot on the roster. Smith can at least play all the positions you mentioned, if only mediocre. A WR or CB may only fill one position and play special teams.

Cut him too much money for a special teams player. Not too mention there is almost no return game anymore in the NFL. Mckelvin and Spiller are better anyway. Yeah he did have an awesome third down percentage but over half the conversions were for just 1 yard. Im sure Fred Jackson can just pound that out himself. As for reciever he had one great catch against the jets. Yay!

I don't think I've ever seen him fail to convert a 3rd and short in the wildcat formation - sadly they stopped using that successful play when they needed to shift him over to WR last year.

Having someone who is AUTOMATIC on 3rd and 1, in addition to all of the other things he brings to the table as noted by others above, is extremely valuable. He's not going anywhere.

no one has addressed whether keeping Brad Smith is more important than Potter's leg or VY's bombs down the field. If we can keep the opposition pinned at the twenty we can take risks w our blitz and line stunts. I thought our major concern has been Defense. Do we want a kick off specialist that keeps Brady and company on thier own 20 to start their series? The wild cat has been successful but what about an offense that doesnt need it or simply aintain it w/ Young? its about the trade off not necessarily the effectivness of the wild cat on 3rd and short.

Huh?

Smth is the reason why you can afford to keep Potter. If you cut Smith, this team then needs:

1. A disaster QB so you keep Thigpen and Jackson

2. Another back-up WR

3. Another ST guy as Smith can be used both as a gunner and a back-KR guy

4. A wildcat specialist- as long as this is an offensive set you are going to use of 3rd and 1 or 3rd and 2, now that you have cut VY if you are gonna cut Smith then you better train someone else quickly for the Wildcat role (improve Jackson passing threat or anytime he is the Wildcat you face 7 or 8 in the box.

If you cannot keep Smith (either due to injury or you panic and cut him after last night then Potter is also gone as you want to add a couple of guys to the roster to fill Smith's back-up roles and to continue running the Wildcat (which without regard to whether you like it or not was a critical part of their 3rd down offense last year and QB coach Lee was the one who invented it with the Dolphins.

Keeping a younger player who specializes in a specific position is much more likely to lead to something good than counting on Smith. He does nothing above average on the football field. Nothing.

Thats your opinion. My opinion is he does a couple of things above average on the field. He's proven in short yardage situations to be above average at getting first downs, when given the opportunity. He has proven in the past to be an above average KR. I'd even say overall on ST, he's above average.

I'm ok with Brad Smith keeping his spot. He's a high utility player, which allows us to keep more players at other spots, specifically on defense.

I think a rookie will be sent to PS so that we can keep 4 QBs for the first few weeks, then TT or TJ will be released depending on how TJ looks in practices, I guess.

For the sake of argument, let's say it Roosevelt you keep instead of Smith since that would be a popular choice. What do you lose?

Wildcat - Cannot a mobile Qb that can throw better than Smith like T-Jax minimize the loss here, if not completely negate it?

WR - Smith is a way below average WR, and looks stiff out there... Naaman all the way here

Returns - We have plenty of KR guys already, they generally don't have long shelf-lives, many kicks aren't even returned anymore and Smith hasn't looked good doing that for us yet. Punt returns are both more valuable and difficult and Roosevelt has looked good doing it. Edge Roosevelt.

Coverage - Okay, B.Smith is good at covering kicks, but do we need a 4 million dollar coverage guy? And if they keep Potter, almost no need anyway.

So sure, he can do 4 things, but none of them better than people we'd have on the roster.... You would, without question, lose someone better at something he does, by keeping him. And now with a groin pull, probably would not even play for a while!!!

Agree to disagree.

having smith allows us to keep " potential prospects" he is the emergency 3rd qb, special teams, wildcat, rb, wr, etc...

you guys act like everyone should be a star, thats not the point with smith, its being smart about ur roster... ugh

I agree, and whether or not I agree, Chan has repeatedly said Smith will stay as the #3QB. Of course he can change his mind, but to me it's just breaking wind to keep yelling he should be cut. Chix and Gailey run the team, it pays fans to listen to them and not tilt at windmills. We didn't bring in Lee, the inventor of the NFL Wildcat, so we could shelve it for good and evidently they feel the skills of a Wildcat QB and the skills of a mobile QB don't overlap enough.

I do think I understand how people feel about Smith though, I kind of feel the same way about Ruvell Martin. I think he is keeping a roster spot from a better WR, because of his talent on ST, yet he draws the most inopportune ST penalties. But my whining about it won't change what Chix and Gailey do.

Just curious, you correctly comment on being smart about ur roster...so why elsewhere are you stuck on us keeping 10 DL? How do you see that as being smart about the roster?

This is just not accurate. Lets say for arguments sake you keep Roosevelt and not Smith. Are you going with no 3rd QB? Cause now you've just lost a guy who could, in a crunch, play 3rd QB. Lets reverse that situation, the Bills keep Smith and get rid of Roosevelt, they now have a player that can cover both the 3rd QB spot AND the positions Roosevelt played, letting the Bills fill a spot on the team they may not be very deep at. Keeping Roosevelt requires the Bills to either keep an extra QB or attempt to hide one on the practice squad, both occupying a spot that could go to someone else.

If you cut Smith, you can still have a roster composition as follows:

3 QBs (Fitz, Jackson, Thigpen)

4 RB/FB

6 WRs

9 OL

3 TE

8 DL

7 LBs

9 DB

4 Special Teams (Moorman, Lindell, Sanborn, Potter)

Depending on what they want to keep, the WR, OL, DL, LB and DB can be plus or minus 1.

Smith staying on team allows you to keep 1 more player. Let's face it, player #53 probably has less potential than guys that will be on the practice squad (except that person probably isn't eligible for PS).

They should keep their best players whenever possible (given some positional constraints) and Brad Smith simply is not one of the best 53.

Am I counting on Smith to be my QB? No and I hope we never have to. Am I counting on Isaiah Green to be my starting corner? No.

A guy that can play 4 positions is valuable. Think the pats thing Julian Edleman is better reciever than Jabar Gaffney? I really doubt that

Because in the two positions we saw him in last night, returner and receiver, he was beyond terrible.

Alot of people are going to be disappointed when Brad Smith is a Bill tomorrow

Granted brad smith LOOKS slow. That's why it looks wierd when he beats nfl defenses to the edge every single time on third and medium.

He didnt look slow when he was wide open on a bomb several yards behind the defensive back that was an easy TD that Thigpen missed.

He does LOOK SLOW. He never appears to be going all out. When you see him live he just appears to be jogging out there.
