eball Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Like others, I'm not a big fan of Choice, but I suspect he stays. I wasn't impressed by his recognition on that red zone situation that ended with Lindell's shank. Would rather see White get a shot. The best thing about that drive is that Gailey fancies Choice as a goal line option. Oops.

Hazed and Amuzed Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 I don't think McGee gets cut, I do believe that the youth movement is in full effect at CB however I think veteran leadership shouldn't be undervalued there. I'd rather see Mckelvin gone.

eball Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 While the discussion has shifted a bit to Tashard Choice and a goal line option, let me say this -- I don't know why the Bills wouldn't give the ball to FredEx near the goal line every time. The guy has a knack for finding the crease like Marcus Allen.
The Senator Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 (edited) As for Brad Smith the guy is the third string/emergency QB and a wildcat specialist. In addition to running the wildcat and special teams ability I think he also gives the team value as being able to line up at receiver. Overall Smith's versatility and ability to run the wildcat will put him on the roster this season. Who, exactly, do you think is beating out Brad Smith for the 3rd QB position? Smith is the wildcat and emergency QB so he won't get cut. Josh Nesbitt can easily handle the 'wildcat' and emergency QB duties (and outplay Brad Smith), making Smith a wasted roster spot - and a waste of money. . Edited August 13, 2012 by The Senator
Sisyphean Bills Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Night and day between Choice and White. Choice is starting from a position where the coach trusts him. White has to earn it.

The guy has a knack for finding the crease like Marcus Allen. For some reason Marv Levy liked Kenny Davis on the GL better than Thurman Thomas. Wayne Fontes let Derrick Moore vulture a bunch of TDs from Barry Sanders because Barry "wasn't a good goalline runner". Al Davis ran Marcus Allen out of town. I never understood that. You have 2 HoF backs and you sit them. You just wanted to sit them down and say "If you need 1 yard to save your life do you want to give the ball to Barry Sanders or Derrick Moore?" If the answer is Sanders then WHY ISNT HE ONT HE FIELD!
Dan Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 As I have been contended on a few of my points from the off season I was going to re-throw a few of the points back out there... 1. Kirk Morrison will be the 1st "surprise" cut if Moats beats him out for the starting OLB job. I had originally stated this some time back and found out Morrison's supporters were still living in 2008. He was invisible for Buffalo last year, he is aging and there is a bunch of youth around him at the position. 2. Marcus Easley - Will only keep 5-6 WR's (6 on a good day)...As stated many times before, Easley has never shown anything for Buffalo (or in college for that matter) other than he can find his way to the IR list. A very tough position to break into in the NFL and having a good "profile" on paper does not prove anything when it comes to the field. At this point I believe he is battling Roosevelt for that final position (if they keep 6). SJ, DJ, DN, TJG, DH (Hagan)...Currently I think Roosevelt has him edged out. 3. Brad Smith - Not sure what purpose he will serve. Not that they have great WR's, but all of the above are better than Smith. He may be listed as the 3rd QB but I dont think this experiment is going to continue into the 2012-13 season. The Bills have return men, have WR's and would sign a 3rd QB over Smith if the first 2 QB's were to get injured. If they get serious and try to lock up Byrd and Levitre before the season, Brad Smith is no more in Buffalo. 4. Torell Troup - If not for the fact they missed so badly in picking him in the 2nd round he would have already been cut. Blame it on injury if you would like, but Troup is not making the team and they can now use "injury" to bail themselves out. 5. Terence McGee - Love him, but injury and youth have made him expendable. 6. Tashard Choice - Tough for Gailey to get rid of a GT guy, but Johnny White looked a little better in the 1st preseason game. Anyway, just some thoughts. Feel free to tee off...just remember (as I think many of you have a tough time realizing) they DO have to cut players and are not able to keep a roster size of 80 I doubt Morrison gets cut. He's a solid, veteran at a position of weakness on the team. Yes, Moats may beat him out as the starter. But if you cut either one... who's the backup? I doubt Easley gets cut, either. He's got the size you want at WR. Plus, plenty of upside. Sure, other players (Roosevelt) may outperform him, but for some reason that hasn't kept Roosevelt on the roster in the past. Another thing to consider, with all the 4 and 5 WR sets, do you really just keep 6 WRs? With Spiller, Smith, Chandler filling that role... maybe. WR cuts will definitely be the most interesting, IMO. There is zero chance Brad Smith gets cut. He's the #3 emergency QB... plus WR, WIldcat guy, Kick Return, etc. guy. Entirely too versatile to get cut. Either Young or Thigpen gets cut. My guess... Thigpen. Young may be rusty in this offense, but he has too good of a track record in comparison to Thigpen. Troup, I can easily see as being cut. He's just too injured for too long and we have too much depth already. Either cut or on the PUP list or something like that. My guess... cut. McGee... maybe. I like the idea of veteran depth at one of the more critical positions on the team. However, there's only 53 spots. So, honestly, I think it comes down to numbers and largely depends on who else they keep on the team. At this point, though, I'll be surprised to see him still on the team, unfortunately. Choice, for me, gets cut. But, as others have noted, Chan seems to like him. So, that may very well keep him on the roster. I just don't know. But, you gotta figure either him or White gets cut. My surprise cut... Lindel. Its hard to take up a roster spot just for a kick off specialist. So, I think they keep the young guy with the big leg. I'm not sure I agree with that, but just what I'm thinking.

If Smith stays, it won't be because of his talent, which is marginal, or his performance on the field, which has been non-existent. The only reason for keeping him on the roster would have to be his superior intellect.
Hplarrm Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 If Smith stays, it won't be because of his talent, which is marginal, or his performance on the field, which has been non-existent. The only reason for keeping him on the roster would have to be his superior intellect. My sense is that Smith is a keeper not simply because of his intellect or leadership, but actually due the onfield flexibility he gives Gailey. Though Smith is not great at any specific aspect of the game (he probably did his best work in the past as a return guy but KR work has been greatly devalued in the current NFL as moving up the kick-off line has greatly devalued the return and the Bills realize the import of this as they may well devote a roster spot to simply getting a touchback on every kickoff. However, Smith provides the team with great flexibility freeing up a roster spot as the disaster QB, but also being a threat to be prepared for as Wildcat QB, back-up WR on a thin WR team and if necessary a back-up QB willing/able to risk injury on ST. Gailey likes having a lot of toys to play with and having Smith simply gives Gailey a lot of options (particularly when the unknowables of what injuries might happen. As far as the others, I think McGhee might be most at risk. one of the real values he added was a great KR option but the rules have changed and a back-up (even one who earned a Pro Bowl berth with his KR talents is a lot less valuable these days. Also if Moats wins the starting OLB job he is a nice guy and inspiring episodic player but mostly this will be a sign that our D is in trouble.

I'm not sure I agree with that, but just what I'm thinking. Didn't Lindell just sign an extension last season, or offseason? I don't think he gets cut. Unless Potter shows that he can be more accurate than Lindell. Having a kickoff specialist that can consistently boot the ball out of the end zone is going to be more important now that they moved the spot for the kickoff. Lindell can't quite get the ball out of the back of the end zone yet.
hondo in seattle Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 This is a good post because it generates a lot of controversy! My two cents... we'll definately keep Brad Smith. People seem to forget the #3 QB in a special roster spot that doesn't count against your game day total. Since the #3 QB most likely not get on the field as a QB (and we're screwed anyway if he does), you might as well put someone in that position that has other talents. Smith fills that spot real nicely. He can return kicks, play WR and run the wildcat and he's not costing us a roster spot. It's like having a free player.
DJasper Probincrux III Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Also if Moats wins the starting OLB job he is a nice guy and inspiring episodic player but mostly this will be a sign that our D is in trouble. I disagree here - Moats has always had interesting athleticism. They jerked him around last year and finally put him back to OLB where he belongs. If he wins the job in this scheme it's because he's developed some coverage ability. If that happens he is an interesting element at OLB because we know he can rush the QB. He's not big enough to beat OTs consistently but I like the matchup of him vs. a TE or RB and that what he gets as an OLB. He's the kind of LB that you WANT to bring on a blitz because he knows what he's doing and will get there and bring pain. With the DTs we have he will be deadly if sent through the B gap with the DE pushing upfield.

Marcus Allen was one of the best. It's not necessarily about being the greatest RB, but being able to negotiate the small creases to get into the endzone, or having the ability to leap the pile. I think FredEx has that knack. Some coaches may also want to spare their "stud" RBs from the explosive hits they can face in those goal line situations.

Dorkington Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Why are we so quick to cut depth here at TBD?
DJasper Probincrux III Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 What do we need depth for? Our guys never get hurt.

Hence... he'd be a surprize cut. ;-) But that is a valuable roster spot just for a kick off guy. We shall see.

Theres no point in arguing this, they won't let themselves believe that he has a purpose and that teh wildcat will be used. I think the #3 QB spot counts against your game day total, but what the rule change does is allows your #3 to come in and replace your QB without having to remove your QB from the game. Smith can come in on offence in a wildcat formation, and Fitz can go sit on the bench for the couple of plays, then return when they go back to a regular formation. In the past, Fitz would have to stay on the field and lineup somewhere else, like WR or else he would be out for the remainder of the game. But of course the Bills could just plug anyone there in that spot and be just as successful, cause Smith is barely adequate as a football player and why would you want to keep a guy around who can play atleast 3 different positions and exploit a special rule put in place when you can use that roster spot to keep an backup at another position!
