WorldTraveller Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 "The federal government administers nearly 80 different overlapping federal means-tested welfare programs," the Senate Budget Committee notes. However, the committee states, the figures used in the chart do not include those who are only benefiting from Social Security and/or Medicare. Food stamps and Medicaid make up a large--and growing--chunk of the more than 100 million recipients. "Among the major means tested welfare programs, since 2000 Medicaid has increased from 34 million people to 54 million in 2011 and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, or food stamps) from 17 million to 45 million in 2011," says the Senate Budget Committee. "Spending on food stamps alone is projected to reach $800 billion over the next decade." The data come "from the U.S. Census’s Survey of Income and Program Participation shows that nearly 110,000 million individuals received a welfare benefit in 2011. (These figures do not include other means-tested benefits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or the health insurance premium subsidies included in the President’s health care law. CBO estimates that the premium subsidies, scheduled to begin in 2014, will cover at least 25 million individuals by the end of the decade.)" This is not just Americans, however. "These figures include not only citizens, but non-citizens as well," according to the committee. http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/over-100-million-now-receiving-federal-welfare_649589.html Yes We Can!
GG Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 Way to continue alienating immigrants GOP. Apparently legal immigrants on their way to citizenship are now lumped in with "This is not just Americans"
WorldTraveller Posted August 8, 2012 Author Posted August 8, 2012 Way to continue alienating immigrants GOP. Apparently legal immigrants on their way to citizenship are now lumped in with "This is not just Americans" Good catch. Sooner they realize this the better off they'll be. Unfortunately, as you've seen even here, the base doesn't see it this way. Having said that, you can see starting around the end of the tech bubble, Welfare dependency has risen sharply. The Great Recession caused an even more dramatic spike, however it is part of the Obama administrations plan to increase dependency, they see it as a form of stimulus that also helps keep their constituency more satisfied.

TakeYouToTasker Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 This is not an "Obama Bad!!!" issue. Every president in recent memory has increased welfare pay-outs. And before anyone starts in with "socialism!", it isn't. It's corporatism. These welfare payments are used as subsidies for Big Farming, which is why they are administered through the Department of Agriculture.
WorldTraveller Posted August 8, 2012 Author Posted August 8, 2012 I sort of made that distinction, however there is a well-documented unprecedented concerted effort to expand the welfare rolls under this administration. This is Big Government on steroids.
Gary M Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 I sort of made that distinction, however there is a well-documented unprecedented concerted effort to expand the welfare rolls under this administration. This is Big Government on steroids. Because they know their only chance at re-election is to have a majority on the dole.

This is Big Government on steroids. The massive increase in subsidy directly correlates with inflationary pressures in the commodities markets. This is how our government attempts to conceal QE monetary policy, and issues price controls while confounding both the Red people and the Blue people in such a way that it steers them both away from confronting the real issue.
DC Tom Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 "110,000 million individuals"? Must be going by Democratic voter registrations...

DC Tom Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 How come JtSP isn't here telling us it's actually higher because of everyone "employed" by the "Warfare State".
WorldTraveller Posted August 8, 2012 Author Posted August 8, 2012 I think steroids is bad, but really it isn't. I think its both
