Maddog69 Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Just wondering if anyone knows more about this than I do. A friend just mentioned that the Bills game in Toronto is in jeopardy because of the labor dispute with the officials. There is a law in Canada prohibiting the use for replacement employees in case of a Lockout. So, the NFL would not be able to use replacement officials in the Toronto game without special approval from the Canadian govt. I have no idea if this is true or not. Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks
Matt in KC Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 (edited) Wouldn't it be horrible if they had to play in Buffalo this year? Thanks for raising the topic. I hadn't heard anything about this. My worthless guess is the law only applies to Canadian companies. I can't imagine they's want to get in the middle of labor disputes for all compaies with varrying degrees of participation in Canada. This article mentions the Quebec Replacement Worker Laws, but Toronto is of course in Ontario.... Linky It also says: British Columbia is the only other jurisdiction in North America that has such restrictions in its labour relations laws. BC’s laws have been in place since 1993 and a similar law in Ontario lasted only from 1992 to 1995. April 1, 2011: A private members bill that would have banned the use of replacement workers by employers when employees are on strike or locked out has been defeated in the Ontario Legislature. VanCity Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 It would be a blessing to have it back in Buffalo, but it won't be the case. The law impacts Canadian companies directly, but does not impact foreign companies with temporary business licenses like the NFL. Even if it were to apply to Ontario, the corporate clout carried by Rogers, the group that teamed up with Ralph to bring the Bills in Toronto series to fruition, would over rule any government attempt to pressure the game off Canadian soil. On a similar note, I continue to be disappointed that they aren't coming to Seattle. I've been waiting 8 years to see them back in the PNW and have to go all the way to San Fran to see them. Though I love visiting Nor Cal, I'd much prefer the convenience of Seattle.
