He actually played well last year and I think it was more of our old coaching staff not knowing how to utilize him.

Don't confuse playing well with running around and lucking into a few sacks because teams didn't even bother to block him with lineman and QB's held the ball for an hour and a half. He was still pretty ineffective 90% of the time.

Whether he lucked into them or not, he still had 6 sacks and 4 forced fumbles. Byrd lucked into a crap load of INTs his rookie year but he still made them.

GD!! He looks yoked! Too bad he has the football instincts of a nun.

its funny - almost identical to his pre-combine stock up - like a pound or two different. that one didnt work out well, and im going out on a limb that this will also disappoint after everyone getting excited for his immense talent in NY. Even at 250, hes on the small side and with the weight he was on the slow side. Its also never been shown he can hold it. him bulking up with laron landry would also worry me. neither seems to be a rocket scientist but both seemed to find a way to "beat the system" and get huge fast this offseason.

If you're looking for someone to defend the coaching abilities of Jauron and Edwards, you've come to the wrong place. ;)

No. Just trying to redirect some of the blame from Maybin to the coaching staff, where most of it belongs IMO.

No they couldn't. The Bills did not have a D that could afford the luxury of a guy running around loose. The Jets D carries Maybin.

PTR

It also tells you something about the relative depth on their teams. Jets had a solid defense without Maybin and had room for a gadget player who comes in on obvious passing downs and let 'er rip.

The Bills were struggling to find any kind of a defense and did not have roster room for a defensive specialist.

You mean that one of the worst pass rushing teams in the NFL couldn't afford the luxury of a pass rushing specialist? Were the Bills so deep that they couldn't find a roster spot for a guy that contributed 6 sacks and 4 forced fumbles for the Jets in 13 games? These arguments aren't very convincing to me.

Good coaches build their schemes to take advantage of the personnel that they have. The Bills didn't do that. They kept trying to turn Maybin into the player they hoped that they had drafted instead of the one that they had. That's poor coaching.

Thats exactly right. The only time Maybin came close to the ball is when the QB held onto the ball for 15 seconds running around and Maybin finally could close in. How long should a OL hold a block for?

That's basically the crux of it, although you have to wonder about the wisdom about keeping Batten/Eddins over Maybin. My guess is that he just wore out his welcome in the locker room and Gailey/Nix decided to make the move. I cannot see how on a pure football potential, the guys they kept had a higher upside than Maybin.

Of course after the crap Maybin pulled in the game last year, I hope that in the opener Wood finishes what he started in training camp a few years back.

I'll take Eddins and Batten.

Eddins looked good in Game 1 last year, had a QB hurry and a positive grade by PFF Premium Stats.

Batten had 4 starts last year, Week 5, 6, 9, 10) and positive Pass Coverage rating in every game.

Maybin had a negative Pass Coverage rating in 8 of 12 games in 2010 for the Bills, and 5 of the 12 Jets games.

That didn't happen in the two sacks he had against the Bills. Fitz didn't even have time to set his feet. Funny how he was getting stoned by Ed Wang when with the Bills but then smoked Pears when in a different scheme with the Jets.

should the words "coaching abilities" even be associated with those two unless it is for a small specific area of concentration?

I am not a Ryan fan but he definitely can coach a defensive unit better than our two could ... still can't see Maybe ever being anything more than he has shown to date, which is basically not much.

Yeah I know... and Drayton Florence was the Bills best cornerback last season. You know what they say about about statistics.

Statistically, McKelvin was. :flirt: But I know. Facts are closet cases here.

Other than the fact it was Scott Chandler who he ran around untouched to sack Fitz, yeah, you're right.

He's fast. That's it. It's one thing to pay him what the Bills paid him to be a one trick pony that can only enter games in obvious passing situations and line up in a wide nine while rushing five on a blitz in order to be effective, and quite another for the Jets to pay him the vet minimum to do so (after they cut him first, of course).

I wouldn't hang your Maybin Fathead just yet. He didn't register a single tackle or assist, let alone a sack in the Jets' last four games last season when the Jets' season was on the line.

GO BILLS!!!

In future news: New York Jets LB Aaron Maybin has been suspended for 4 games after violating the leagues substance abuse policy.

Totally agree. The veins say it all. Juice!!

One vs Chandler, one vs Pears.

I don't think that Maybin is an all pro or anything. He's just better than the coaches allowed him to look.

You sure 'bout the nun comparison thing? I've known some pretty fierce nuns in my day.

Can't wait to see a running back flatten him again.

I was kinda thinking that myself. Swamp Boy could squash him like a buuuuug.

I'm not going to defend Jauron, but Maybin was a DE. A DE that couldn't rush the passer or defend the run. He got tossed around like a rag doll. That's not scheme, that's just a crappy player. It's not tough to make an occasional play when opposing teams think so little of you that they let a TE or RB block you with ZERO help from a lineman. Maybin's one move is to line up 5 yards off tackle and run as fast as he can in a straight line and hope the QB is still there on the way back.
