how did jarron gilbert look in mini-camp?

Recommended Posts

Troup sounds like he would be delighted to "get after it" and is looking forward to 4-3. I am sure he will give it his best effort. with that back injury i think it's either/ or. You can play all out or cant play at all. I am sure this will be sorted before the end of camp. But Hopeful, you dont sound very hopeful! I am very hopeful for TT but not very realistic. Oh well ;)

Not at all amazing just normal on this board - posters will move conversation to same points they brought u[ a hundred times in other threads.

well, no one told them what the talking point on gilbert at mini camp is... or in general. which is really what 90% of the banter here is -- "i heard this" "while i heard that"

just remove the i heard part and pass it off as an astute observation on your own part!

Apparently I'm the only one posting in this thread who thinks that salary might play a part in the roster decisions on the defensive line… and that's a good thing if the Bills have gotten past money being a factor in their roster decisions.

However keep in mind that Spencer Johnson will make $3 million this year (the last of his contract) and that Dwan Edwards will be making $3.8 million this year.

That's a LOT of money for reserve defensive linemen and I'm skeptical at best that these salaries won't factor into the final decisions.

letting spencer finish his contract will factor into our compensatory picks down the line, which is a nice perk, all things equal and assuming we wouldnt resign him (i know in the grand equation this is like a half of a half of a quarter percent of the decision making process)

you think kyle moore beats out spencer?

I really have no idea who the last men standing will be… I just think that all things being equal that the veteran contracts of Spencer and Dwan put them on a bit of thin ice.

I think other things being equal, money may factor in. I think other things are likely not equal.

Chix and Nailey know the pressure's on them to win this year. Playoffs are the minimal expectation. Anything else is cause to question whether they're the right guys for the team. That being the case, if a guy making $3 million as a backup will give them a better chance to win, it makes sense to keep him - this year.

I think it's very likely Edwards or Johnson may be cut, but if they are, IMO it will be because they are changing to a new position and someone is legitimately out playing them in this scheme.

Something we might consider. Do we actaully need the money this year? There was a pronouncement recently that clarified how much we had left till cap. Dont recall for sure but i think was about seven and a half. Now we need to get a jump on contracts for Levitre and Byrd. I would think we would favor up and coming youth over money and veteran experience at DT since we just got a couple vet DE's.

Because i dont understand the cap rules, or practice suad eligibility yet i think we may not need to shed some salaries this year at least.

Good point by both of you… the idea that their contracts might work against them more in 2013 than they would this year.

Another good point, if we lose Spencer as a free agent at the end of his contract it might work in our favor somewhat.

It's amusing that everyone dismisses Dwan Edwards when he is clearly the third best interior lineman on this team.

I would strongly dispute that, especially when you consider he has basically only played 3-4 DE as a pro. Teams had no problems running at him last year. Spencer Johnson is a far more talented 4-3 DT IMO. Plus, Edwards is by far the highest paid interior linesman on the team (2012 base salary), that includes KW, Dareus, and Johnson. The guy is also getting up there in football years (31) and has chronic spine issues. He has a lot going against him and I would be quite shocked if he makes the team.

That still leaves Johnson, Heard, Carrington, with Troup also looking for a spot. So Gilbert would need to be down right dominant (or some injuries) in camp to secure a place on the opening day roster.

This is true, but I think more important than that is the simple fact that this guy would make a very solid reserve DT in a 4-3.

Before the Bills went to the 3-4, I thought Johnson was our most impressive DT at the time, and he didn't even start most games. That's exactly the role we would want him to play now. Solid DT coming off the bench. Carrington looks interesting, but unproven as an inside pass rushing specialist, heard has size, but only Johnson has already proven he can fill this role, and at a high level. As I mentioned before, Dwan has never played in a pure 4-3 scheme as a pro, and is the oldest, highest paid DT on the team.

Keep in mind KW is coming back from having his achilles reattached, no small thing. And DT's are some of the biggest guys on the team, we need good reserves at that position.

an article appeared in rumblings today about Dwan speaking very recently. He sounds confident, and he does have 4-3 experience.

Since Wanny has talked him up a bit by now i would not bet against us keeping him this year. Actually i thought he played well last year nothing spectacular but solid.

Well, what's Troup gonna say? Of course he's gonna say he's delighted to get after it.

I am Hopeful about my Bills this year!!!!!!!

Regarding the guys from the 2010 draft class who haven't seen the field much, you are right - I am more Realistic than Hopeful! I will be delighted if either Easley or Troup makes the 53 and then I will be "Hopeful" that they will do well - and I'm not expecting it.

Off the topic, Turbosrrgood I can't decide which avatar I find more disturbing - Meathead's, your old one, or the one you have now.

It would be amusing if Easley does not make the team then he willhave gotten 2 years of NFL pay for absolutley zero strain on his body. I could have contributed just as much and would have acceoted less than half a 4th rounders money.

Amusing may not be the best word here.

Would you have been able to deal with the adversity he has plowed through and still had his attitude? You might , but i may not have the gut for it. Just to play in the NFL.

And most important here... maintained your NFL prototype physique during these last coupla years.

You can worry about that scenario when you're actually… you know… DRAFTED!!!???

That should be easy for me, drop 25 years, 30 lbs., and develop strength and coordination. I can do it! I know I can! But that said, my point remains, I could have contributed just as much as Easley. More power to him I hope he does well this year and makes the team again.
