DaveinElma
Take a look at this- http://www.freep.com/article/20120629/NEWS05/206290365/Racial-gaps-in-Michigan-exam-results-a-concern Those concerns are echoed by an education advocacy group’s analysis of last week’s Michigan Merit Exam and ACT scores that show black and low-income students are falling even further behind the state’s white students. While white student achievement has risen slightly over five years, scores for black and Hispanic students and students in poverty “remain grim,” according to the Education Trust-Midwest. "But that's because the government is not giving them enough resources"-every liberal wrong. 1968-"The Board of Education will use a $6-million federal grant for five schools in an effort to change the course education in Detroit's riot area" http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=BtgvAAAAIBAJ&sjid=qDEDAAAAIBAJ&pg=5229,2267350&dq=detroit+federal+education+grant&hl=en 1969-College Students Received Funds For Job Training, Federal... http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=AvsNAAAAIBAJ&sjid=x3sDAAAAIBAJ&pg=2695,1378810&dq=detroit+federal+education+grant&hl=en 1971-Michigan To Receive Increase In Federal Education Grants . http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=MV8iAAAAIBAJ&sjid=_qoFAAAAIBAJ&pg=5507,2294395&dq=michigan+federal+education+grant&hl=en 1994-"Nine Cities To Get Science Education Grants" (15 million to Detroit) http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=YIUzAAAAIBAJ&sjid=nTgHAAAAIBAJ&pg=3046,3339403&dq=detroit+federal+education+grant&hl=en 2010-108 struggling schools in Michigan seek federal aid; almost half are in Detroit http://www.mlive.com/news/detroit/index.ssf/2010/06/108_struggling_schools_in_mich.html That's 5 decades of the federal government pumping tax dollars into Michigan and with what result? Students are performing more poorly than ever. Note that the American student was doing much better academically before the founding of the Department of Education in 1980. This is one of the greatest scandals of the last half century that no one will confront due to political expediency.
MARCELL DAREUS POWER
throwing money at a problem never solves anything really. you need sociological change. nutrition, environment should feel safe, role models, wisdom, solid educational resources, easy access... etc etc. detroit has none of this... dayman
Anyone interested in this debate should watch the GPS Special "Fixing Education." You can buy it for $2 on Itunes. It's a great piece on education. Actual smart reporting and analysis on the problem...ya know...something this board probably isn't interested in. Y'know, for someone who consistently tells us what is wrong with this board, you sure spend a lot of time here. Do you show up at baseball games and tell everyone around you how boring the sport is? Do you go to strip clubs and complain about breast implants? Do you go to OWS rallies and complain about capitalism by tweeting on your iPhone? Seriously. We get it. You're special. Give it a rest already.

Not a good idea IMO.
