Kelly the Dog
If you take into account international cinema I might have to go with 1962. Lawrence of Arabia The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Jules and Jim Manchurin Candidate To Kill a Mockingbird Vivre Se Vie L'Eclisse Knife in the Water The MIracle Worker Lolita The Exterminating Angel Ride the High Country Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner Winter Light Carnival of Souls Sanjuro La Jetee That's a pretty hefty lineup from some of the great filmmakers of the first 100 years of film. That is surely a great line-up. Then add... Whatever happened to Baby Jane Sundays and Cybele Days of Wine and Roses The Music Man How the West Was Won Mutiny on the Bounty Cape Fear Sweet Bird of Youth Dr. No and of course, Girls! Girls! Girls!
Astrojanitor
1974 was pretty amazing: Chinatowan Godfather II Texas Chainsaw Massacre Dirty Mary Crazy Larry Ali: Fear Eats The Soul Young Frankenstein 99 44/100% Dead Zardoz We All Loved Each Other So Much Blazing Saddles Black Christmas Taking of Pelham 1,2,3 Street Fighter Stone Son of Dracula (maybe only notable to fellow Nilsson junkies) Parallax View Phantom of the Paradise Mr. Majestyk Lenny It's Alive Female Trouble A Woman Under The Influence F For Fake The Conversation Dark Star Cockfighter Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia California Split Caged Heat Suglarland Express Andy Warhol's Frankenstein
DC Tom
1954: 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Rear Window Seven Samurai The Barefoot Contessa The Caine Mutiny Sabrina On The Waterfront Dial M for Murder Creature From the Black Lagoon (classic creature-feature) Them! (two of the defining creature-features in one year). Gojira (okay, THREE defining creature-features...and a seriously underrated movie - excellent anti-war film, if you understand the Japanese context.) And - thought I haven't seen it - White Christmas is a classic as well.

I decided on 1973 but pretty much any one of them is a good candidate.

EasternOHBillsFan
So, even though I love classic movies and think finding the year for movies is impossible (and I can't agree with 1939 as I didn't like Gone With The Wind or Stagecoach or the boring Wuthering Heights), I long for nostalgia and the year 1985: Back to the Future Rambo: First Blood Part II Rocky IV (A personal Rocky favorite, a great reflection of the times) The Color Purple Cocoon Witness The Goonies (Can't forget this boyhood gem) Spies Like Us (a true FORGOTTEN classic that is my favorite Aykroyd film after Blues Brothers) A View to a Kill European Vacation (So much fun despite knocks by critics) Fletch Pale Rider Brewster's Millions (Too much fun watching him spend the money) The Breakfast Club St. Elmo's Fire Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome Prizzi's Honor The Black Cauldron The Falcon and the Snowman Weird Science (Kelly Lebrock.... OMFG) Real Genius (You will never look at popcorn the same again) Clue (One of the most creative comedies of all time with different endings) Red Heat Death Wish 3 (not rated high but if you include Mr. Majestyk in a list then by GOLLY I'm including this movie!)
