Favorite year in movies

Recommended Posts

I was watching movies on TV this weekend(being that the weather was horrid in my neck of the woods)and noticed that the few movies that i caught were from the same year. Back to the Future and Fletch were both from 1985 and are two of my faves, so I looked up films from 1985 and saw that along with the aforementioned The Goonies, Breakfast Club, European Vacation and Rocky 4 were all from that year as well and while maybe not the best movies they're some fun movies to watch.

Also 1979 had some great films as well, Alien, Rocky 2, Apocalypse Now, The Jerk and Star Trek.

What years stand out to you as far as films go?

1994 -- Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, Clerks, Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Natural Born Killers.

^^Not a bad lineup.

EDIT: Looking at another year -- 1999 was pretty damn good as well.

Matrix, Three Kings, Fight Club, Magnolia, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Being John Malkovich, The Insider, Blair Witch Project, Toy Story 2, Any Given Sunday, Office Space, American Beauty, Sixth Sense.

Yeah that was #3 on my list, 1994 was the year I worked at Blockbuster Video for the summer. Great movies that year.

I remember Jim Carrey having a very busy start, but I didn't realize it was that busy. I didn't realize Dumb and Dumber was the same year too.

I am not probably a big enough film fanatic to think of movies in terms of years...more eras. Love early to mid-70's Hollywood...

A local theater, that has lots of film festivals, is having a "Summer of '82" film series this summer...they proclaim it as the best year for summer films. It had "Wrath of Kahn", "E.T.", "Conan The Barbarian", etc.. thought it was a cool idea. I think the only one of these "blockbusters" I saw when it came out, was "Kahn".

You beat me to it. 1999 was an amazing year for movies, and I have not seen a year like it since. Other movies from 1999 include: Tarzan, Galaxy Quest, Boys Don't Cry and The Green Mile. Oh yeah, and Star Wars Episode I. I know I'll get heat for that.

Many people say that year was the best ever for movies, and it's tough to disagree.

1977: Star Wars, Close Encounters, Oh God, Smokey and the Bandit, A Bridge Too Far, The Spy Who Loved Me, Annie Hall, Slap Shot.

And Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo.

For 1981, let's not forget, "On Golden Pond". I'm surprised and pleased that you mentioned "Taps", a film that gets overlooked.

If you take into account international cinema I might have to go with 1962.

Lawrence of Arabia

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

Jules and Jim

Manchurin Candidate

To Kill a Mockingbird

Vivre Se Vie

L'Eclisse

Knife in the Water

The MIracle Worker

Lolita

The Exterminating Angel

Ride the High Country

Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner

Winter Light

Carnival of Souls

Sanjuro

La Jetee

That's a pretty hefty lineup from some of the great filmmakers of the first 100 years of film.

1999 was great thought I'd take off Lock Stock, Blair witch and Any Given Sunday and add The Iron Giant, South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut, Princess Mononoke, The Limey, Run Lola Run, Election, Eyes Wide Shut, Felicia's Journey and The Straight Story. A great year for movies particularly for animation.

Indeed, 1939 is the obvious answer.
