Brooklyn Nets or New York Knicks

As a Knicks fan, I wonder which team will get the most support from the residents of New York? With Jay Z as the face of the Nets, I feel a lot of young people will lean towards Brooklyn. However, most people in Brooklyn have always supported the Knicks. I'm interested to see how this plays out.

It's an interesting question. I'm a Knicks fan but let's say by some miracle nets assemble a team with talent like OKC. The Bkln arena is very accessible from manhattan so of course I'd want to see some games. At a minimum changing the location and substituting Brooklyn for new jersey should add a cross town rivalry like mets and yanks, jets and giants have.

If your team has a musician as the "face" of the franchise, your team has issues.

Hardly. He's exactly what the Nets need to become legit at the beginning. Obviously players will have to follow eventually. The Nets are lucky the Knicks have been a clown show for what seems like forever.

Their arena is kind of small capacity-wise. Anyone in NYC have a sense of how hot Nets tickets will be?

When it comes to B-ball in NYC, the Nets will always be the ABA team they were compared to the Knicks.

I care nothing about the NBA, but this is obvious. No matter what your rooting interest, there is an indisputable hierarchy of teams in the NYC market that never changes.

Giants > Jets

Yankees > Mets

Rangers > Islanders/Devils

Knicks > Nets

Wouldn't think those are so set in stone. Don't you think winning championships has something to do with it?

Giants win super bowls, jets don't

Yankees win world series, mets don't

Islanders and devils ARE NOT New York teams, not in name or location, never been.

Knicks will always be #1, but I think the Brooklyn Nets are going to have an appeal that the other secondary teams never had. First, it's basketball...second, it's Brooklyn. New Yorkers are as trendy as anyone...it is part of what makes NYC what it is. The Brooklyn team is going to be located in, perhaps, the trendiest area in the city...I think they will draw well, and sell TONS of merchendise. I am already hoping to score tickets to see the Celtics play in Brooklyn...I think this is one of those expansions that is a plus for it's league, rather than a minus. The New Jersey Nets, even when decent, have been a non-entity for most of their existence...Brooklyn Nets already have a much higher profile.

That is exactly it. And, for the borough of Brooklyn, it will be the #1 team.

I agree that the nets are probably going to be the "trendy" team now and probably have a huge following of youth who follow the hip hop crowd because Jay-Z is affiliated with teh franchise. The Knicks will still have a huge following, especially with the older crowds, but their fan base could take a hit from the youth.

Alot of the time whenever there are multiple teams in a city or state, one is always the "younger brother" to the other. Yankees/Mets, Cubs/White Sox, Rangers/Islanders, Dodgers/Any team in Cali. Most of the time its because one has been a better team then the other, but alot of it has to do with the team that was there first. They had the chance to build up their fan base and fans loyalty to the older team prevented them from leaving them for a new one.

New York loves the Knicks...the whole "Lin-sanity" illustrated that...you would have thought it was the second coming of MJ, when the Knicks strung together a nice winning streak...that is how long it had been. The Knicks have been so mis-managed for so long, maybe they are turnig a corner, finally. The Knicks-Nets now will actually have a real rivalry. I know ESPN will over-do it with the hype (which will turn a lot of people off), but it should be a great story. Still curious to see who the Nets get to build their team around. I can't stand Howard (a bigger a-hole than Lebron, IMO) but he would bring them instant crediblity on the court.

Younger brother to the Cubs? The Sox? LOL! The only reason that appears to hold water is because the Cubs were "regionlized" with the advent of cable TV. True the Cubs are 20 some years older... But had multiple nicknames before becoming "Cubs," including the name "White Stockings." Heck, the Sox have been around since 1903 and hold the name before BoSox, who were the "Ameircans" at the time.. And even before the Yankees were born. I contend if the Yankees (Highlanders) didn't have the Giants and Dodgers leave, the Giants would be the "older sibling" of New York... That name has never changed (I think)... Unlike the Cubs who where "in flux" when the Sox became a team.

Are you saying that there are not more Cubs fans than White Sox fans in Chicago?

LOL... Touche... But didn't your parents teach you that quality is better than quantity!

:nana:

Anyway, Sox poor fairly from being on the South Side coupled with the Chicago Cardinals (football)... Cubs faired better being paired with the Bears at Wrigley... The Bears were always the North Side team.

All about perception and the American League being the "Jr. Circuit." Hogwash... Sox own the Cubbies... Always have. They are Chicago's real baseball team... :nana: Historically too!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark here and say your a Sox fan? Just a guess, LOL

I'm just going by the perception of the teams from somewhere other then the home of that team. When talking about baseball, when you sa New York, first team thats usually brought up is the Yankees. When you say Chicago, its the Cubs. You could go back and say the same thing about Canada and baseball, it was almost always the Jays that were first over the Expos. In Basketball, its always the Lakers instead of Clippers.

You do make a good point, that most of the cities with multiple teams the fan base is usually divided by the area of the City you are in, and Chicago is one of the best examples of this.

As for the Knicks, I don't think that the Nets will replace them as NYs Basketball team, but I think they will steal away alot of the younger fans because of the fact that a famous celebrity is a big part of the front office/ownership, and they are marketing the team heavily to the young hip hop crowd. It would be different if some white investment baker millionaire bought the team and moved them, I don't think they would gain as much of a fan base
