mountainwampus
Is anyone else worried that this team doesn't have enough DE's? Merriman is a total wildcard. Anderson might not be as good as his sack stats suggest. Who knows, Mario might not fit in. Perhaps Kelsay is the safest bet right now?? I can't believe I'm saying that... Meathead
haha no theyve got plenty of des. even w/o merriman its better than most teams if merriman plays at all this season hes gonna be a rush specialist only. so really it doesnt matter what they list him as, he will be placed wherever on the field he fits into a specialty package. theyre calling him a de more just because they gotta pick one

Not really sure if your being sarcastic or not here but I wouldn't worry. S. Johnson, D. Edwards, Moats, and Batten can also play left and right DE in the 4-3 in a pinch. Not saying I'd want that but I'd be alright with Edwards or Johnson at LDE in the event of 3 or 4 injuries and Moats and Batten for the same reasons on the other side. For once I feel we have oodles and oodles of depth at multiple positions.

Thunderstealer
I dont get why people hate on Kelsay... what has he done wrong? When he bounced off of Jay Cutler that one game. That was pretty bad. Brand J
It seems to me that much of the criticism of Kelsay comes from his failure to be a reasonable facsimile of Bruce Smith instead of giving him his props for what he is: a Phil Hansen-type DE who unfortunately has not had a dominating DE on the other end of the line. Let's get real here... Chris Kelsay is no Phil Hansen. You say he hasn't had a dominating DE on the other end of the line...? I agree. That Aaron Schobel guy was a real bum. Not dominant by any means, but when the old #94 was playing opposite Kelsay, you never saw #90 in, or around the QB. Chris Kelsay is just a guy, folks. That's all. Not a difference maker, or a factor. Does he perform his job to the best of his abilities? Yes. Does he have limitations? Yes. Should he be cut? Assuming the Bills go into the season with 4 DEs, he should get the ax ONLY if he doesn't prove better than his competition: Mario Williams, Mark Anderson, Spencer Johnson, and Shawne Merriman. Of course the team could keep 5 DEs and 4 DTs, that is also a strong possibility.

All he knows is how to lose, the team would be better off without his bad karma bringing everyone else down. And anyone who blindly accepts as fact all of the coach- speak and propaganda coming out of OBD is going to be WRONG most of the time... this has proven to be true over the years on this board, and it looks like history is repeating itself yet again. Dopey
Ummm. Merriman is not a LDE in a 4-3. Not even close. I'm not saying this can't happen but it's probably the longest shot of anything we've been talking about. A few things here. Our defensive line, assuming everyone is healthy will look like this: LDE- Williams- Kelsey DT- Williams- Troupe DT- Dareus- S. Johnson RDE- Merriman- Anderson or possibly Anderson with Merriman in obvious passing situations. On that note. My biggest gripe with Kelsey his entire career wasn't in regards to him really. More like the team around him. Just 3 years ago he was considered our BEST DLmen. Possibly Williams but hebeas still just working his way to startdom. Kelsey was arguably the best. If your best DE is Chris Kelsey you are in trouble. Now...... Even if he does start opposite Williams he will still only be our 4th best DLmen. And for that reason I don't hate him on this team anymore. That's all I think you guys are forgetting a player who I think will be a wild card at DE. His name is Alex Carrington. He too suffered through the switch back and forth between a 3-4 OLB and DE(sometimes DT). He was a DE in college and I think he will help out alot at RDE. Merriman seems soooo out of place on this team right now.

Also, his athleticism, assuming he's healthy (yeah, I know) will provide the Stache with a ton of scheme/personnel flexibility. A healthy Merriman is a fit in any defense. GO BILLS!!! Bruce
Umm, no they don't, and never have. They only react to morons who call him a piece of $chitt. Get over it. I think that the major beef most people have had with Kelsay is that his contract has not been on par with his performance on the field. Buddy initially came out and blabbed about his value in the locker room, as a leader, as a captain, etc. And those things are not to be diminished, but you don't pay a guy millions of dollars for a multiyear deal if he is a cheerleader in pads. Now, I view Kelsay as a poor mans Phil Hansen; a steady player who holds his own, but is never going to dominate. Indeed, when you look at his accumulation of sacks they seem to come in flood-type games where he gets 3 in a game against a 2nd or 3rd string tackle. I like Kelsay, and think- barring injuries- when combined with other stars like Super Mario- Kelsay should find a rejuvenated career. Kind of like Trace Armstrong had during his final days in Miami. I personally like Kelsay, but I don't think that he's worth the contract. Talented and dependable, but unsensational and overpaid.

I think IF Merriman is able to return full-speed and everyone stays healthy, Anderson may not see the field too much. It'd be interesting to see if/how Mario, Merriman, & Anderson will all be out there in passing situations.
