Nanker
Just curious - what happens to the newly departed in a situation like this? They were probably being carted off to a farm when this happened. Do they take the carcasses to a local slaughterhouse or bring in one of the butcher in a trailer guys to do it up right there? Or do they just dig a big hole and dump them in it? <= seems unlikely. Seems like it'd be a hell of a problem - picking up and disposing of the remains, especially if they were deemed unfit for consumption. Musta tied up traffic for a while. When a moose get hit in Anchorage[ just about every day ] volunteers butcher it right on the side of the road. Meat go's to soup kitichins. Musta tied up traffic for a while. you cannot process downed beef as a law in NC. This past winter a tree came down on a damn good steer and broke its leg. I could do **** with it. A guy from work came and picked it up. Had to do all the work himself - took him 14 hours, he and two others. Also, they can use it for rendering dog food, etc. They likely will be used for something, from the bones for bleaching sugar to the inner organs being rendered. The shape of the actual beef after such trauma ruins it, too.

Wacka
My dad grew up on the east side during the Depression. They lived between the railroad tracks and the slaughterhouse. He remembers them closing down the street, coming down the street with bullhorns telling people to stay indoors and driving the cattle from the railroad cars to the slaughterhouse. Seems like a real waste of good protein that could be put to good use somewhere.

Jim in Anchorage
Glad that's stuff's not wasted. I worked with a volunteer once. He was late for work a few times from 1 AM moose calls. http://www.adn.com/2012/01/28/2288561/suspended-road-kill-moose-retrieval.html Edited May 25, 2012 by Jim in Anchorage
boyst
Bummer. Wonder why such a law exists? Maybe keeps the dishonest from having an "accident" for a sick cow? Seems like a real waste of good protein that could be put to good use somewhere. Mad Cow mostly started it. The horrible treatment by people lifting down cattle with forklifts and injured cattle did not help. Plus, a downed cow of over 24 hours really degrades the product if there is muscle or structural damage. Cows also cannot be given certain meds prior to harvest. The different meds have withdrawal, most antibiotics are 30 days while some are 5 days and some even 0. Hormones and other additives have little to no withdrawal. People would be amazed at what they eat and would probably never eat again if they only knew what goes in to their food and how it effects the body. Try drinking a gallon of milk today with a large steak and white bread. You'll be sick. Bovine milk is much different then what humans are able to digest which is why there is a strong movement of goat milk happening. It is closer to our own milk then cows and some have been able to prove better. Also, with our bodies generally not consuming propper diets our enzymes, probiotics and bacteria in the stomach is often not at the right level to digest red meats which is why some people do so poorly with them. White bread and most carbohydrates are something humans are not designed for either. Our body craves sugar, fat and salt because in the wild those items are the least often found and on high energy lifestyles provide a great source of nutrition in propper amounts as one would find in the caveman era. Today we consume a bag of skittles then a McD's burger with a mocha choco latte grande frappechino bistro...low sugar. We are destroying ourselves with the lifestyles we live.
