vincec Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 While Powell probably won't make the team, Potter certainly should. He's KO'd 8 times and had touchbacks on all of them. However I hope they put Powell on the PS because Moorman won't play forever and Powell has potential. I wish that the Bills would've given Potter a chance to win the position outright instead on just being a kickoff specialist. He was kicking FGs very well from the training camp reports but it seems that they had decided before he even got there that if he was going to make it then it would just be as a kickoff specialist. Now the Bills are going to have to cut someone at another position if they want his leg on the team. Frankly, I'm not sure it's worth it. I don't think kicking it out of the end zone is such a big advantage to kicking it high and down to the 1 yard line. The Bills covered these very well last season and you always have the chance for a turnover.
The Senator Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 I could be wrong, but I don't know if you see too many punters on practice squads - it's just not a position you need a practice player for during the week... Actually, Coach, it's not all that uncommon - Moorman was signed by the Seahawks in 1999 as an undrafted free agent and sat on Seattle's practice squad for two seasons, until the Bills signed him in 2001... GO BILLSSS!!!! 19 and 0 baby!!!!!

Doc Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 (edited) It would helpful to know what the average starting field position was for opposing teams after KO's. I'm sure it was beyond the 20-yard line. Not to mention there is a much lower chance of injury during the play. Edited August 26, 2012 by Doc
VanCity Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 in order for Potter to be worth a spot, the Bills have to expect to score a lot of TDs. That roster spot could go elsewhere if the preseason is any indication. Unlike many, I believe that there is a very real possibility that it is.
Direhard Fan Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Moorman is here to stay. He still has the ability to keep the ball inside the 20. We need to get our O going or all this talk is not worth anything because he will be kicking inside OUR 20. His experience is worth a ton.
Dat Dude Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Moorman is kicking as well as ever and he's obviously the Bills punter in 2012, but he'll be a 37-year-old free agent next year. Ergo, I can still see the Bills hiding Powell on the practice squad for the future - and also in case anything happens to our 36-year-old punter during the season.
Orton's Arm Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Nice article on TBD about the rookie P from FSU, Powell. I think this is legitimate competition for Moorman. Funny thing about Powell; he has been coached/trained by former Bills P Greg Cater and said he has a Cater Bills jersey. Pretty cool. Anyway, he appears more polished and skilled than you'd expect coming out of college. Moorman is probably the Bills' MVP over the past decade, and a real class act, but I certainly have seen a decline over the past couple of seasons. Love the fact Nix is even working to upgrade arguably one of the Bills' strongest positions. Any time a punter is your team's MVP, it's not good news! That said, those who've argued that Moorman is on the decline have made a convincing case. I could easily envision Nix keeping Powell, and using him as a punter + kickoff specialist. If Powell can kick the ball off, you have to wonder if he could also be used as a backup placekicker in case Lindell gets hurt. Or if you could use him on very long field goal attempts.
NoSaint Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 And I'll say again, a ps punter might keep an aging leg fresh during the season. Can give a few days off at practice while still working the coverage teams. Not huge but your 60th most valuable player isn't likely to give much else.
