Most dominant player (in terms of what the position demands) in baseball history?

For all the Ruths and Mays and Ryans, the case could be made that nothing was ever as sure of a thing as Rivera entering a tight game. The few blown saves were always frankly shocking.

Wow, the guy is a legend.

I am not a Yankee fan but the guy is going to go down as the best reliever to ever play the game. I don't even think it is up for debate. Power closers often times when it goes bad it goes bad quickly & then they are done. Mo has been doing it for what 16/17 years with great success. The guy was a freak of nature.

It's a silly thing, but I'm fighting back tears right now.

If Mo is done, I can't imagine a more unceremonious exit...shagging fly balls at goddamn Kaufman Park? You gotta be kidding me.

I promise you...his career WILL resume either in the playoffs or in 2013. Mo is not going out like that.

I'm trying to tell myself that. At the same time, some 22 year olds have difficulty coming back from ACL/Meniscus tears. Mo is 42.

I hope so, but I doubt it. I tore my ACL when I was his age. I had to hang up the sports stuff. Sucked.

I felt real bad for Mo, watching SC, last night. You could see the pain on his face as he realizes it might actually be over. I felt sadder for Mo then when I heard about the Seau story, to tell you the truth.

In a way, this is actually a great way to go out for Mariano. His career can end while he's still very much dominant, instead of going out getting roped. JMO.

But did you have the best Dr.s, rehab folks and were in truly elite condition? I think he'll be back for 2013. There's even talk from Jeter that Rivera could make it back for October which would be nothing short of a medical miracle.

I was in great shape. Also I had the Orthopaedic Surgeon for the Tampa Bay Rays do the ACL. So I'd say I had one of the best in the business.

I was just giving my opinon, I hope I'm wrong, as I'm a life long Yankee's fan.

I'm hoping he pulls a Chipper Jones. I think Mo was going to announce his retirement halfway through this season. Just as Chipper was going to retire last year...........Then Chipper tore his ACL and said no way he's going out like that. He rehabbed himself - not sure of his age, but obviously he's up there, too, and I just saw him hit a walk-off homer two nights ago (he actually hit two, but the first one went juuuust foul, and then he left no doubt on the 2nd one!)
