May Movies: Avengers, MIB 3, Dark Shadows, & Battleship.....

Recommended Posts

The month of April ended the Spring Season of movies with a whimper. Now the month of May moves in with a big BOOM! The Summer Season of movies is back and once again brings big excitement with big titles, big stars, bug budgets, and big explosions. There will be plenty of movies aimed at all age demographics, but it's the tent pole titles that look to make the big bucks. The month of May is stacked and ready to deliver the goods, but one movie alone could turn out to not only be the big moneymaker of the Summer, but possibly the year.

In 2008 Robert Downey Jr., donned the costume of "Ole Shellhead", and found a rebirth in Hollywood with the big hit "Iron Man". Yet for Marvel it was the start of something bigger looming on the horizon. After Marvel's success with it's "X-Men" & "Spider-Man" franchises, they then brought forth their biggest and most ambitious project yet. Four years later, with more success and a new owner in the form of Disney, that dream is now a reality as "The Avengers" is ready to take center stage this Summer. Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. brings together a team of super humans to form The Avengers to help save the Earth from Loki and his army. The super humans in question are: Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, Captain America, Black Widow & Hawkeye. This is a comic book fan's dream come true to have a group of superheroes in the same movie at once. The big question is, will we get another installment in this series? Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johannson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgard, Gwyneth Paltrow & Cobie Smulders.

In 1997 Tommy Lee Jones & Will Smith hit it big with the sci-fi/comedy "Men In Black". It took five years for a sequel to be made and now it has taken 10 years to make a third movie, but Agents J & K are back in "Men In Black III". Agent J travels in time to MIB's early years in the 1960s, to stop an alien from assassinating his friend Agent K and changing history. Adding time travel to this series seems inspired and Josh Brolin playing young Agent K is a great move. Now are people still excited to see more from this series? We shall see. Also starring Emma Thompson & Alice Eve.

It seems to be a yearly event when the actor/director duo of Johnny Depp & Tim Burton team up for a new movie. Well they are back together again with "Dark Shadows". Based on the 1960's TV Soap Opera, An imprisoned vampire, Barnabas Collins, is set free and returns to his ancestral home, where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection. What more could we expect from this duo? Also starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Chloe Grace Moretz, Bella Heathcote, Gulliver McGrath & Christopher Lee.

Universal Studios brings the board game "Battleship" to the big screen, in a big budgeted way. A fleet of ships is forced to do battle with an armada of unknown origins in order to discover and thwart their destructive goals. Starring Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Liam Neeson, Brooklyn Decker & Rihanna. Probably the most unexpected cast of the year.

There will be plenty of comedy to go around this month as well.

For those who want their comedy romantic, there's "What to Expect When You're Expecting". A look at love through the eyes of five interconnected couples experiencing the thrills and surprises of having a baby, and ultimately coming to understand the universal truth that no matter what you plan for, life doesn't always deliver what's expected. The ensemble cast includes: Elizabeth Banks, Chace Crawford, Brooklyn Decker, Cameron Diaz, Anna Kendrick, Jennifer Lopez, Matthew Morrison, Chris Rock, Rodrigo Santoro & Dennis Quaid.

For those who want their comedy raunchy, there's "The Dictator". The heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed. Starring Sacha Baron Cohen, Anna Faris, John C. Reilly, Megan Fox & Ben Kingsley.

For those who want their comedy bizarre, there's director Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom". A pair of lovers flee their New England town, which causes a local search party to fan out and find them. Starring Jared Gilman, Kara Hayward, Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, Jason Schwartzman & Bob Balaban.

For those who want their comedy to be more of a "dramedy", there's "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel". British retirees travel to India to take up residence in what they believe is a newly restored hotel. Less luxurious than its advertisements, the Marigold Hotel nevertheless slowly begins to charm in unexpected ways. Starring Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel, Tom Wilkinson & Maggie Smith.

Finally, for horror fans, there's "The Chernobyl Diaries". Six tourists hire an extreme tour guide who takes them to the abandoned city Pripyat, the former home to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. During their exploration, they soon discover they are not alone. Starring Jesse McCartney, Jonathan Sadowski & Olivia Dudley.

I hate that I won't be able to see the Avengers this weekend. That will probably be the only one from this batch that I do see in theaters, but I'll want to see MIB and the Dictator at some point.

Oh, and does Johnny Depp ever not play an androgynous character?

Well let's see how he'll look as Tonto in next year's "Lone Ranger" movie.

I'm pumped to see that there is another Wes Anderson flick coming out. Absolutely loved Rushmore, Royal Tenembaums, and The Life Aquatic. Wasn't such a huge fan of Darjeeling Limited though...hopefully he will rebound with Moonrise Kingdom. The sound tracks to these movies are very good as well.

As a kid I never had any interest to play

"Battleship" and now I'm dying to see the

movie.

I used to play Battleship with my grandfather every time we visited him and my grandmother when I was little.

What about the movie has you so excited, if I may ask?

The battleground scenery. The technical

aspect of the movie. The action. Liam

Neeson rarely lays an egg in a movie and

I am interested in how the SI Cover winner

Brooklyn Decker does in a movie.

Some of those Indies look good...I want to see The Samaritan and Death of a Superhero for sure.

And please, for the love of GOD, nobody see A Little Bit of Heaven...I saw that at an early screening and I was ready to put a gun to my head by the half way point. It's one of the most pathetic and depressing films I've ever seen.

Sounds like my kind of movie. What do you mean by "pathetic" (if you can describe that bit without spoiling anything)?

It just takes all sort of cheap attempts to tug on your heartstrings and your emotions...I felt like it was the equivalent of a horror flick that relies on cheap thrills because they can't come up with something more creative or meaningful, so they just go for the easy "make you jump" scene. It was also incredibly unrealistic and "poofy"...just totally rubbed me the wrong way.

Where do you live Tgreg? I was crushed last night when I realized it wasn't playing anywhere near me. I'm a huge Wes Anderson fan, I've seen every one of his films in the theater since I saw Bottle Rocket. My favorite being Rushmore.

Bleh. I love depressing films, but only when they're at least marginally well thought-out.
