UPDATE: QB Vince Young Signs With Buffalo Bills

Recommended Posts

I love how everyone who supports him looks at the team's win loss record. Look at his individual stats, which I posted - they suck He can't read a defense and has to run when he has no idea WTF to do with ball. The Titans were not that bad of a team and were quite successful under McNair prior to him.

Is Jeff Fisher a bad coach? NO he is a really really good coach, who Young got fired. Young is a headcase who can't handle pressure and like most players from Texas - SUCKS A$$ in the pros. Basing arguments for him on the Titans or Eagles W-L record have no bearing on his ability. If anything I think he cost the teams wins.

Read what Young says he wants - a chance to start. Who would bring this nutcase into our locker room and all the crap that comes with it? I don't want a response that says well maybe he has matured...well maybe he hasn't. I haven't seen any indication otherwise. In fact, is Dream Team comment painted a huge bulls eye on the Eagles back and lacks common sense.

I have not seen one compelling argument other than he is better than Thigpen. Honestly is that the best you guys can do? You already have the media starting the he is better than Fitz crap - do we really want to go down this road again? Even David Carr who flopped accepts that he is a back-up and is no where near the headcase Young is. We might as well bring in Jamarcus Russel for a 3rd stringer, he is better than Fitz and Young and Thigpen. Maybe he got off his purple drank....

You're completely ignoring half of his history. You can't seriously dismiss the debacle in Tennessee (which literally sent Jeff Fischer packing, whose career with the Titan started when they were still called the Oilers), as "a toxic fit for some reason." That's like saying of someone who died of lung cancer, "it was an allergic reaction to cigarettes for some reason." That "some reason" is pretty important and worth looking into.

LOL

Agree but I do trust Nix/Gailey because they haven't brought in a problem child yet. If they feel our locker room can handle Young and if they feel Young is a piece we need then I'm all for it

Way to lose all credibility in one sentence.

For a new poster he/she does make sense. I generally agree with what you say about trusting Nix/Gailey. I do however sometimes worry about coach's and their needs/desires for reclamation projects, which is one of the the biggest mistakes this franchise could make with the QB position at this moment in time. We went down this road with Trent, in some ways we are going down it with Fitz. If Fitz fails for whatever reason, I want no part of Young being named the heir apparent and the Nix/Gailey train coming out saying we can win with this guy. Fact of the matter is teams don't. There is a reason he originally got like a 6 on the wonderlic; which after it got out mysteriously was called a mistake and changed to a 12 or whatever it was.

This is one way to throw away this entire offseason. I am all for upgrading our backup situation and even our starting QB, but there are types of people you stay away from...This guy is one of them!

Way to lose all credibility in one sentence.

Prove my points with these 3

An All-time list though Blue? Lots of 1 year players on there and like all programs their share of busts.

From what I recall the Mike Williams/Vince Young era of Texas football contributed nothing when it came to offense and that more of the point I was going for and didn't clearly articulate it.

I agree. Young's problem wasn't so much lack of talent. It was more lack of a work ethic and positive, productive mindset and enough mind to set.

Maybe Vince has been doing a lot of Zen meditation and psychotherapy these last couple years and has pulled his head out of his anus finally. No harm in Nix and Gailey doing some due diligence to find out.

Fixed for you. There's a saying, "you can't fix stupid"

I hope Nix and Gailey are doing due diligence. They've said that visits are to have position coaches work with a guy, diagram some plays and then see how much he retains and understands.

And see how he can read and progress, perhaps, from talking through film?

I just don't see VY settling happily into his role as backup QB to 7th round Harvard Boy

No one says he's the heir apparent. Meanwhile, he's never gotten in huge trouble - although you might say he has been troubled. I can imagine that the Bud Adams / Jeff Fisher disagreement on Young did not make for the most stable situation for a young, talented and growing player. If he was ever going to mature, the Tennessee situation wasn't going to make that easy.

The list of NFL players who have made good on second chances is long. Not as long as the list of busts, but if Chan and Buddy view him as salvageable for the backup position and maybe something more down the road - MAYBE, you hear me? - I am fine with it. He is an upgrade on Thigpen and I can't see how that's very disputable.

If he's coming in to be the backup, what's the harm? What kind of serious damage can he do? I, for one, see a LOT of team chemistry building. Everybody seems to be on the same page. VY gets on that page or there's the door. Same goes for everyone else on the roster. Chan and Buddy run a pretty tight ship.

Aside from making a bonehead remark about being "The Dream Team" last year, what has he really done to deserve such a cancer label? He made some mistakes in Tennessee, but he seems to have learned from them.

I see far more upside and insurance in a move like this then I do pessimism. Low risk, potential high reward.

We're not asking him to be the face of the franchise here people. We're just asking him to be an upgrade to Tyler Thigpen. Relax.

Let me put it to you this way. What, in either his previous history or his year with the Iggles, inclines you to believe he has the work ethic and peristence to prepare hard every week and do what backups do - backup the QB, be ready at need?

Did he look ready in Philly when he was called upon?

I don't know how much you work in groups, but it pretty much only takes one tempermental a**hole to sour a lot of atmosphere.

If a backup QB who clearly needs to step back and take stock of his situation is going to be enough to tear apart a team that's clearly behind Ryan Fitzpatrick, this team is not as close as we thought, and it's a mentally weak team. I just don't believe that's the case. He didn't have a good showing in Philly, but he was also playing for a coach who appears to be losing his team at times.

wow 15 pages of this? is trying a guy out for back-up really that big of a deal?

i am as critical as anyone of the bills, but i have no problem with trying a guy out. any guy.

i mean seriously, they were smart enough to piece together this supposedly grade-a off-season and now suddenly they are morons for giving a guy a look? good grief, either you trust their judgment or you don't. hell, my faith in their judgment still hasn't totally recovered from spiller-at-9, but i still can't fault them for taking a look at a player.

From day 1 it seemed he resented having to bring him in, as if bud Adams made him. I didn't follow close but it never seemed fisher was going to have VY to his house for dinner - you know, have a mentoring/fatherly/steadying influence on him. VY wasn't without warts by any means but it always struck me that fisher seemed to almost resent his success. As coach I expected him to be the bigger man, granted, again, I only know broad strokes and big incidents, not day to day happenings that well.

Fisher is not without fail - a middle of the pack record, love of guys like pacman, fat Albert and now Jenkins, as well as being so tight with Gregg has all kinds of left him in limbo in my book.

Young has said that he is looking to be a starter, the Eagles GM said today they tried to offer him a 2-year deal last off season but wouldn't take it because he wants to start. Yes it is good to have players who have the mindset that they want to start. Again look back in this long thread, I posted his career stats - they suck. His win loss record is meaningless, the Titans had a good team and did win some games in spite of him; yes I said in spite of him. Where people think he is a good player is beyond me, he hasn't shown it. Last season 4 TDs and 9ints; 4 picks against the Seahawks. Traveris Jackson played better than him in that game. Is he better than Thigpen yeah, but there are other players out there who are better than him that don't come with this guy's baggage and that is the point.

Upgrading your team or a position is one thing. This kid has a history of tossing his coach under the bus, and not being able to handle pressure; the Titans made a horrible decision to keep Young over Fisher. Fisher gave him every chance to succeed, but he wasn't able to. As soon as he signed with the Eagles he opened his mouth and Reid and the Eagles very quickly had to stop the talk of it. I can promise you that every team playing the Eagles brought their A game to disprove that very comment. With his low wonderlic score, he was unable to realize the magnitude of making that comment. If he had grown and matured that much, he would not have made that comment, especially since he was signed to be a backup.

No need to be an !@#$ and ask if I hear you? Honestly, you the F&^* are you? You seem to be yet another poster on this board that can't provide facts to back up their opinion or accept that other may disagree and provide facts showing their position.

Isn't that the truth. Being in various management positions and being responsible for teams and even supervisors reporting to me, I can't tell you how many times you bring in a person based off a great resume and they either:

1.) have the mental capacity of a fly

2.) feel entitled

3.) is just an !@#$

4.) can't handle the pressure associated with their job and destroys the team

5.) can't handle the pressure and self implodes.

It doesn't matter how strong that team is as it adversely affects moral, the work atmosphere and makes work a dreadful place to go to.

If they sign him it wont be PS. Brad smith is needed for wildcat and also a good WR backup. So this must mean theyre looking to get rid of thigpen. Also think it indicates they know they need someone to pressure fitz as starter.

This article from the Toronto Sun provides Link Greg Cossel's opinion of Young:

"...

Is it another smart personnel move by Bills general manager Buddy Nix and head coach Chan Gailey?

Or would adding Young risk upsetting the special team chemistry that everyone from Nix and Gailey to the ball boys can see on the team, and believes will be a strong factor if the Bills are to contend for a playoff spot in 2012?

To put it bluntly, the word inside the NFL is that Young has a poor work ethic. In Tennessee he was a me-first player, blind to his own culpability for his misfortunes as an NFLer. And that while he accepted his backup role in Philly last year, he still said dumb things and regressed on the field.

...

So just how good, or bad, is Young?

We asked Greg Cosell, who with NFL Films has been evaluating college and NFL talent for more than 20 years, and whose incisive assessments are widely respected.

"I think that Vince Young is a quarterback that is limited in the kind of offence he can run," Cosell said Tuesday. "He needs to run an offence whose foundation is the run, so you give him the play-action pass game, because that limits your reads, and defines your reads.

"If you put him in the shotgun, he's not very good at seeing things before the snap, which is a very, very critical part of playing quarterback in today's NFL -- particularly if you're in the shotgun in a spread, because it's always up to the quarterback in the spread to figure out who potentially is blitzing."

The Bills, of course, often utilize the shotgun spread. And a spread QB who struggles in this "pre-snap phase," as Cosell calls it, is a drive-killer because defences will overload their blitzes to one side if they know the QB won't make accommodations for it.

"So what happens is (Young) becomes an improvisational, random player," Cosell said. "And because he's got a lot of physical ability, every once in a while he'll make some spectacular plays."

...

"Young's only competition to be Fitzpatrick's backup is Tyler Thigpen, a journeyman who barely played last year. Could Young succeed in some alt-package variation of the zone-read spread, or wildcat, that Gailey might dream up for him? "Theoretically, yes," Cosell said, because Young can provide the dual threat. But, of course, Brad Smith already fills that function on the Bills. And it says here it would be asking a lot of Young, given his past, to be the backup to one quarterback, let alone two. "

Curious. I thought Dennis Dixon, with his Doug Whaley connection, would be considered.

PTR

Please this

I think the exact opposite is happening. The Wildcat means the defense has to account for every offensive player. With a non-running QB, it's almost like 10 on 11. With the Wildcat, it's 11 on 11.

I know Chan said it but I don't buy it, if it was true teams would blitz every pass play.

Bringing in Vince Young for a visit and a workout is perfectly consistent with what Buddy Nix said immediately following the draft - namely, that the Bills would be bringing on another FA QB..."and a good one".

Brief interlude for OBD to announce they're bringing in Vince Young - former 2X Pro Bowl QB, Heisman runner-up, and former #3 overall pick - for a visit and a workout...that's all, so far...just a visit and a workout...

TSW naysayers and trolls (predictably):

That bum? Why? I'd rather have Thigpen as our backup than a former #3 overall pick, Heisman runner up, 2X Pro Bowl QB...

There is this ^

he is going to trot of VY, who has refused to go back into a game after being booed, thrown his pads into the stands and disappeared and was on suicide watch before?

And then there is this ^

no way. he has proven he can not read a D fast enough and get the ball out quick enough.

Why bother wasting time when we know the end results

This goes for VY (as much as TE) as shown last year too (although he just takes off and runs, which he is fairly good at). Hopefully our line looks better than Philly's did last season (because they looked like crap by the time VY got in there).

I think he might be as talented a QB as any we have had in a Bill's uni in a long long time BUT (and my favorite kind of BUTS are big ones) he has got to stop the bad performances combined with the crazy bobble headed crap (he might be just plain loony let's face it, we just don't know. If I was interviewing him I would include a really long talk with a professional and get a profile for the guy).

So in conclusion: from what I saw last and the year before??? I would rather Dennis Dixon as well, who I know with out doubt is a level headed back up and has shown results of his own.

I don't know what to make of this mess that is VY. He has proven he's a waste of time with previous teams. But on the other hand there's a slight chance he turns his sorry azz around. I honestly can't turn my back to him right away because I've made misakes in my life that I've learned from. But it's difficult for me to think this egomaniac can learn from his mistakes. Character and ethics (and also when it comes to football, talent, hard hitting, loyalty, never say die attitude means a heck of a lot to me) VY had his chances and then some. I Do NOT want a Cancer on this team. If he is signed by Nixley then so be it. But if he emmits the slightest show of (it's all bout me) then jettison this jackazz.

Some peeps here might be ok with winning with whatever jackazz but I'm not. If this bipolar individual can learn to handle himself for once then maybe I can learn to handle having him as a backup. If he fancies himself as the starter then I'm all for jettisoning the duche. I honestly hope I'm proven wrong!

Senator I pretty much always agree with u, but on this, sowwy. Can't.
