How Conservatives Are Viewed By The Left

"Hey fallen SR71.

You are the one misinterpreting fascism. The right-wing in this country doesn't want small government. They want to use it to push their agenda, like outlawing abortion and even making contraception illegal. How about building up the military industrial complex instead investing it at home and in our people? Also, look at the right-wings relationship with Wall Street and multi-national corporations. How about their outright destruction of collective bargaining rights and blaming unions for all of our problems? How about all of the right-to-work states? How about calling anyone who is progressive and pro-worker rights a communist or socialist? How about the war on women and illegal immigrants in border states? How about appointing private managers to replace democratically elected officials in Michigan? Your party wants to control people and replace democracy, and it's happening under your nose. You better read history"

It got me thinking about how conservatives are viewed by the left and how untrue and all encompassing their assumptions are. The stereotypes in this person's comments we hear all the time. How many people that consider themselves conservative believe any of the following:

1) Outlawing abortion

2) Making contraception illegal

3) Building up the military industrial complex

4) The right-wing has a special relationship with Wall Street and multi-nationsl corporations

5) Conservatives want to destroy all collective bargaining rights and blame unions for all of the problems

6) That anyone who is a progressive or pro worker rights is a communist or socialist

7) Is for a War on Women

8) Is for a war on illegal immigrants

I specifically didn't address the Michigan law because I haven't researched it. A brief Google only showed me a lot of hyperbole. How many of the positions listed as conservative beliefs have been pushed by Obama, the DNC and others on the left?

How many Independents and Liberals think that those are all positions of the right?

holy ****, that could have been written by my father in law!

I love the guy, don't get me wrong, but he is "literally" so bad, that if he hits a pothole in the road (in NJ) it's because the Republicans defunded the DOT and there was no money to fix the roads...

Ill play....

1) Outlawing abortion: Im against abortion but it should remain legal.

2) Making contraception illegal: Nope

3) Building up the military industrial complex: I support a strong military. I dont want to fund every program the Pentagon dreams up whole hog, though.

4) The right-wing has a special relationship with Wall Street and multi-nationsl corporations: We do?

5) Conservatives want to destroy all collective bargaining rights and blame unions for all of the problems: Nope. Just want to limit union's power in politics WRT municipal unions

6) That anyone who is a progressive or pro worker rights is a communist or socialist: Nope

7) Is for a War on Women: Nope

8) Is for a war on illegal immigrants: This is the closest one to being accurate. My general position is this..."welcome legal immigrants, deport illegal immigrants." If thats a war, so be it. And how could a "war" on illegal activity EVER be considered bad?

For the record, I'm in favor of this one. Of course the word 'destroy' should be replaced with 'save the country from'.

After reading your post, if I posted my personal opinion it would be redundant.

Not sure if I am an actual conservative, my views slant more to the libertarian side of things for the most part. I am definitely a fiscal conservative, but have a more liberal view of social issues. To clarify, I think you should do whatever you want as long as you do not harm others, so if you are gay and want to "marry", fine by me. One huge problem I have with Republicans is that many in thier party seem willing to legislate morality in terms of religion. I think issues of morals/religion is up to you and should be left out of government. To address your questions:

1) Outlawing abortion: I don't like it, but know what? Just because I don't like something doesn't mean I get all offended and want things outlawed because I do not choose to do them. You want to get one, fine, live with it, but I wouldn't choose to do so.

2) Making contraception illegal: oh for Christ's sake, seriously? That's too dumb to even address.

3) Building up the military industrial complex: Miliary spending has many benefits to our economy, as it infuses huge dollars onto private industry, provides advances in technology, and employees citizens. I agree with the previous that they should be someone kept under control though, I do not believe in emprire building, and think we should avoid international conflicts if possible. But if fools get out of line, well, I'd do em like TR.

4) The right-wing has a special relationship with Wall Street and multi-nationsl corporations: huh?

5) Conservatives want to destroy all collective bargaining rights and blame unions for all of the problems: I think putting controls on groups who take from others to fatten thier own wallets is a good thing. No special treatment for anyone.

6) That anyone who is a progressive or pro worker rights is a communist or socialist: That is way to general of a statement for me, each person should be judged on thier own merits or lack thereof.

7) Is for a War on Women: anyone who actually believes this is either a dishonest or a complete fool. Or both most likely.

8) Is for a war on illegal immigrants: I wouldn't call it a war, more like, if you are going to have laws, then enforce them, or change the damn laws.

Except on point 2) I would add a "But pay for it through your own means. It's not the federal government's responsibility to give you free contraception or require insurers to do the same."

And just to be sure, this view applies to a lot of other things besides contraception. It's about the $ only, not a social agenda.

i think it's a pretty good list...just not broken down into conservative subtypes, as it should be.

some subtypes: fundamentalist christian and other religious zealots

the wealthy who want assurances that they stay that way and the power to influence legislation to that end

the wannabe wealthy, who believe it's just a matter of time cuz they've figured out the game, so don't change the rules now.

the angry...at "people getting more than they deserve" or getting, what they perceive to be preferential treatment from the govt

the hawks, who believe that america and americans have the power to take what it wants and should do so

the disenfranchised, who believe their lot is a result of unfair foreign competition and failed govt policy experiments

just a few and far from all inclusive, but probably covers the list presented in the initial post.

Please explain how this is a conservative (in the modern political sense) trait?

Because Nancy and Obama and Hollywood are all eager to toss away their personal wealth if everyone could be "equal"?

Because John Corzine is more interested in social justice than in raping people for personal wealth?

nancy and obama are willing to avidly support legislation that will lessen their wealth as are many (most) liberals for the purpose of advancing their beliefs. conservatives generally are not in my experience. if they give, they're usually expecting to get more back.

Corzine? don't know....maybe he didn't think he could become gov as a repub? what is it the propagandists say? rino? corzine seems to me the dem equivalent.

Instead of "subtypes", those are probably more accurately referred to as "archetypes", given that they're gross oversimplifications and largely fictitious.

If you believe that the New Deal and the Great Society programs are ruining America you are right-wing if you believe that neo-liberal economics and military overreach are ruining America you are left-wing.

You know a "conservative" who thinks America should be a neo-imperialist power with a foreign policy based on conquest and exploitation?

More likely that you just think you do, because you're retarded.
