Kelly the Dog Posted April 30, 2012 Share Posted April 30, 2012 Jones was already marginalized by the Cincy game. Derek Hagan showed more downfield ability, but the offense was shot by then. Jones' role in the offense was to stretch the field. He was not effective in that role. He got hurt and then he was marginalized because he had no burst. He had a bad game against CIN but then again most of the team did and they still should have won, on the road, against a playoff team. He was open, he just didnt come down with the ball because he is just not that good. The defense let us down as much as the offense. Meachem was slated to start opposite Stevie. If they picked a WR in rounds 1 or 2, they would have been defacto starters. To me that indicates that Bills are not fully sold on Jones & Easley either. Donald Jones is ok as the 4th or 5th WR option. He is not a legit No. 2 and last year's play proved it. Plus if you want to extrapolate full season stats, 51 catches may be ok for the No. 2 guy, but a 10 YPC is not what you need out of your long ball threat. I don't think they are counting on Easley. You would be a fool to. Even if he hadn't been hurt he was still a fourth round draft pick and basically one year wonder at UConn. Two years not playing football may not assure you have lost a little but it doesn't give you confidence either. I personally was never sold on Jones although the Bills seemed to think so. But that could have been what I think they are doing with Chris Hairston, which is yes, they like him and think he has a lot of potential, they just don't want to start him. But if they have to, because they didn't get anyone else to, then they want to build up his confidence and make him think they do believe 100% in him. To me, there is a very decent chance that Jones doesn't even make the team. I would not at all be surprised to see the Bills WR corps this season in game one being Stevie, Easley, Nelson, Graham, and Hagan. I think that Gailey plans on using CJ or Freddy on a lot of plays as virtual wideouts, as well as Brad Smith, which greatly lessens the need for a #6 WR. They may still keep Ruvel Martin although because Bradham, Brooks and Tank should be excellent ST guys they may not need him, and if they keep the extra kicker as a KO specialist they really won't need him. The #2 WR can certainly be upgraded. But with only so many bullets in the gun, every GM has some kind of weakness on his roster that has to be covered up a bit. The 3-headed monster of Jones, Easley and Graham (on paper) appears to be better than what we entered the season with last year. Can it be improved on? You betca. The idea that the FO thinks highly of him and that they want him to succeed is not a bad thing. Its not as if the hopes of the Bills rest in the hands of Marcus Easley. I would have liked to see them get a little more explosive on the outside, but adding Graham was a great move that will help take some of the pressure off the short timing routes. When Easley takes the field this year, he will either do something or he won't. If he doesn't, so what its nothing lost. If he does its just gravy on the plate. Did you read the OP, especially the part in bold below? We know we have a need of a big receiver opposite Stevie. I have a feeling that the reason we didn't go out and get one in the draft so far is because they really like Easley and think he can make a difference this year. Because they sent a private plane to NO the first afternoon of FA and at exactly 3 pm when it start, took Robert Meachem hostage. They were going to sign him when SD swooped in at the last minute and overpaid. Then they were set to draft a WR with the #2 pick in the draft (Nix stated this morning) except a player they rated higher and needed more was available, Glenn. they they traded up just two spots, something they are very loathe to do, just in case someone else wanted the WR they had targeted in the third. Talking about how he could have come back last year....has been healthy and working out....looks like Tarzan...yada yada yada Its Easley BUT.....Nix also learned that not having quality backups kills the team....so he is constantly looking to upgrade. Actually.....this is not what it tells me at all. What I see? A GM who doesn't want to be plucking players off the practice squad and waiver wire and trying to win. I think Jones-Easley-Graham is better than Jones-Smith-Spiller at the position (what we had last year due to injuries). Is it the ideal hall of famer, Randy Moss style guy? Meachem was all set to sign in Buffalo for what was a market rate at 10PM that day, until SD blew the offer away. Bills didn't sign any WR free agents because the market moved away from their comfort zone. Bills would have taken Blackmon if he dropped to 10. Bills were all set to draft Hill or Quick if Glenn wasn't on the board. The fact that they traded up two spots to land a guy in the 3rd is a sure sign that WR was a priority and they're probably not done.
