metzelaars_lives Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 This was written by Todd McShay the day after the 2009 draft. Do you need any more evidence that it's all a colossal crap shoot? Don't tell me Bruce Irvin was a reach and who had a good draft and who didn't. NONE OF YOU KNOW. Go Bills! 2009 draft class Best pick: DE/OLB Aaron Maybin, Penn State (first round, No. 11 overall) Worst pick: C Eric Wood, Louisville (first round, No.28 overall) Bottom line: On paper, this is one of the best drafts of 2009. I would have liked to see them take an OT with one of their two first-round picks. Wood was a bit of a reach late in the first, but he and G Andrew Levitre will ultimately become starters and boost what was the weakest area of the team entering the draft. Buffalo's second-biggest priority was to upgrade its pass rush, and that goal was accomplished by selecting Maybin, who is the best pure edge rusher in this class. Maybin will play in a rotation with Chris Kelsay and Aaron Schobel early on and will have time to get bigger and stronger. And watch out for TE Shawn Nelson, who could turn into a late-round steal.
Homey D. Clown Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 Every time I see Aaron Maybin's name it makes me laugh. All I can hear is that moronic rap song make for him HA! you QB Cravin' stud! lol.

It's a crap shoot when you have a crappy draft department. I'd take nix over a coin toss any day...

Nix took Troup over a hometown kid who was slated to be a top ten pick before he got hurt in college, was built like Triple H but taller and would've slid perfectly into a position of great need.

There is a lot of evidence to suggest that Modrak had a lot of sway in that draft, as Nix did not complete the regime change until after the first year. True or not, I'd prefer to judge Nix starting last year when the entire draft/personnel department became "his people."
hondo in seattle Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 (edited) It's a crap shoot when you have a crappy draft department. I'd take nix over a coin toss any day... And, until proven otherwise, I'll trust Nix over the draft gurus, not to mention the fans on TBD who fashion themselves draft gurus. Metzelaars ~ Good job digging up that old McShay draft evaluation. McShay, like many of the other draftniks, is really smart. He knows names and numbers. But, much like his peers, he is NOT good at projecting NFL success. Edited April 27, 2012 by hondo in seattle
Sisyphean Bills Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 If you want to go with a gambling analogy, then throwing craps is a misleading one. Success in the NFL draft is not purely chance. An NFL team should be expected to do better than pulling names out of a hat. What's more, some teams are better than that. A better analogy would be horse racing. There are professionals that study and know the horses well enough to make money betting at the track. Do they win every bet? Hardly. But, it is possible to win more than you lose with enough work.

I don't think that pick was a case of Modrak infecting the draft analysis in any way.
K-9 Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 It's a crap shoot when you have a crappy draft department. I'd take nix over a coin toss any day... It's a crap shoot, regardless. Brian Billick said the other day that JaMarcus Russell was the highest rated player EVER on their board. That's Ozzie Newsome's board, whom I think is one of the best ever at what he does. GO BILLS!!!
