Fezmid
You didn't have to pay... You could just parked there for free and risked getting the ticket. Who says you had to pay to vote? Take the ticket (if you would even get one) and fight that battle later. Fight what battle? If I hadn't paid, I would've been parked illegally. Therefore I had to pay to vote. That said, Wisconsin is offering FREE IDs to folks, so it's a moot point. Don't you live in MN? I live right across the border -- I'm about 18 miles away from St. Paul, MN, but technically live in Wisconsin. It really kinda sucks since I get no WI news (unless I hunt for it myself), and doing taxes is annoying because I work in MN so pay all my taxes there... Except for the ones I don't. There used to be tax reciprocity so I only had to fill out one form, but that was cancelled a couple of years ago. Sounds like they might be bringing it back though which will be nice. Park there illegally then and vote... Like duh... You don't have pay right then and there to vote... You may not even get caught. Again, you did not have to pay to vote... You were intimidated to pay, thinking you had to in order to vote. Break the law. Now, you may have a point if they nullified your vote. ExiledInIllinois
Why are you confused? You are telling me that paying to park is gonna get in the way of you voting? Not insulting you Fez, but that is dumb. Just because the legal thing to do is pay... Doesn't mean you have to or at the very least let that get in the way of casting a vote. Your comparison is rather dumb and idiotic. Again, not in noway insulting you... But I didn't take you as a sheep. Same thing if somebody asks me for ID when I go to vote (never once happened in my life). Of course I am gonna take the path of least resistance and show them... But catch me without my wallet and I will exercise my rights. Anyway... I am sure you can park free 36 blocks away and hump it in on foot to get to your polling place... That is if you really feel adhering to a parking law takes priority over voting. Life isn't perfect. I do get the funny you are making... I am just deconstructing it. Sorry for being serious. ExiledInIllinois
Can't people hump it on foot 36 blocks to get a free ID from the DMV then? Sure. Unless you and I live in the same state there is only one election that we have in common... Fed presidential elections... Then all election laws and polling practices should be the same for everybody throughout the country.

Then all election laws and polling practices should be the same for everybody throughout the country. They're already not though. I fill in a bubble with a pen. Minnesota draws a line to the candidate they want. New York has those wacky machines where you pull levers. Florida has the "hanging chads." So why is that ok, but requiring an ID (for states who chose to go that route) not ok? I was clearly joking about the disenfranchised comment -- although I DID find it amusing that I had to legally pay to park at the municipal clerk's office, yet nobody complains about that. I don't think is okay that nothing is standardized... In Illinois you do not have to show, same with NYS and CA... Yet... it should be all the same no matter what route they take... ID or no ID... Especially in the one election everybody shares... The federal pres. The process should be the same in an interconnected tech world. There is no harm to it, standardization... Doesn't effect the states in this modern setting.

meazza
In WI, the proposal was to allow people to get a free ID if they didn't already have one. Not according to this guy: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2012/05/31/the_stakes_in_the_walker_recall_114325.html The most obvious way of gaming the system is to keep your opponents from voting in the next election. Rigging the electorate is a surefire way of holding on to office. That is exactly what has happened in state after state -- Wisconsin is one of them -- where GOP legislatures passed new laws on voter identification and registration. They are plainly aimed at making it much more difficult for poorer, younger and minority voters to get or stay on the voter rolls, and to cast ballots when Election Day comes. Rationalized by claims of extensive voter fraud that are invented out of whole cloth, these measures are discriminatory in their effect and partisan in their purpose. On their own, they are sufficient cause for the electorate to rise up and cry, "Stop!"

Next we'll hear about how awful requiring photo ID/proof of age is. And it's funny to read stuff like "t seeks to use incumbency to alter the rules and tilt the legal and electoral playing field decisively toward the interests of those in power."
