NoSaint Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 If the move is considered moving up then they are allowed to go, that is why DC/OC leave teams to become HC every year. Within the nfl, you don't have to ask permission for a move up as mentioned. Horizontal require permission to interview while employed by another team. To leave and do something else (coach college, or flip burgers at the restaurant down the street) does not require anything that I know of.
Doc Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 I can't see Wanny, given his time at Pitt and with the way the Bills' defense played (not his fault, but he was on the staff), that he'd be anything but a hard sell to the boosters.

bills44 Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 That doesn't make sense to me at all. Â A contract is a contract. Â Where did you acquire this bit of information? Â maybe there is no such thing as contract law in the State of Arkansas?
Captain Hindsight Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Did they mention how much Mario signed for in Tennesse?
NewEra Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 1334109921[/url]' post='2434229']I think it's time to show Wanny the money and give him no reason to leave, i.e. Jason Garrett. Â Because you want him to become our head coach after Chan gets fired? No thanks. He sucks as a HC. SUCKS. Don't show this guy any money....yet. Let's see how the D does this season and then pay him if they do well. Look at the wonders he did for our LBs last year......oh wait.

So a coach quitting to do something other than an NFL job could be sued for damages. Edited April 11, 2012 by DC Grid

Coaches leave their teams all the time with no repercussions as long as they are moving up (asst coach to HC) or going to college. The only time I have seen any team decline a move is when a position coach wants to take a DC/OC position.
hondo in seattle Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 PFT discussed Arkansas options and lists Wanny with this comment:  Dave Wannstedt, defensive coordinator, Buffalo Bills — There’s one reason and one reason only why the former Pittsburgh head coach has been mentioned by a national writer — a previous relationship with Long. Beyond that convenient tie, Wannstedt makes zero sense and would instantly and literally become one of the worst hires in the history of the game. http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/04/10/reports-bobby-petrino-fired-at-arkansas/related/

Buffalo Barbarian Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Talking head on EsPN just mentioned Wanny as a possible replacement HC in Arkansas. You shut your mouth! Â Really hope he doesn't go cuz we haven't had a great DC since Wade and now that we are getting some weapons it would be a shame for him to leave now. Â Don't know Wanny's mindset but he maybe he's at the point where he doesn't want to HC any more and just wants Work with the D which is what he does best as his HC resume isn't the greatest.
#34fan Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 (edited) Don't take Wannstedt. -TAKE CHAN. Â Leave the 'stache, and take the TRASH! Â -I'm kidding. I was ready to give Chan my support for at least one more year. However.... If he wants to return to the dirty south, and coach a team that's poised to make a national title run, I won't hold it against him. Â I'm sure with our re-vamped D, we won't be the same turnoff to a lot of prospective candidates. Â Give us the sneaky, deceitful, douchebag, from Arkansas. We'll put his natural talents to use as OC. Edited April 11, 2012 by #34fan

Teams can block lower level assistants frmo interviewing for a promotion. They can't block coaches from interviewing for a HC job. Tampa asked for permission to interview a number of position coaches for their OC job and were denied by the coaches teams (GB, Ariz, NYG).
CodeMonkey Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Unless someone here knows the detailed terms of the staches contract, stating that he can or cannot leave to take another job is pointless.
T master Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Talking head on EsPN just mentioned Wanny as a possible replacement HC in Arkansas. Â I think Wanny may have had a lot to do with getting Buddy to spend the kind of money he did to get Mario to come to B-lo . Â I think that Wanny would have said something like OK i'll take the gig but it's going to go like this I'm not being a second tier Defense we need this , this , this & this & i'll sign , so i for one don't think he is going anywhere especially seeing as this is his first coordinator gig back in the NFL . Â If he was to walk out on this right now he would be mentioned in the same sentence as a Bobby Patrino in NFL surroundings !!
Coach Tuesday Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Unless someone here knows the detailed terms of the staches contract, stating that he can or cannot leave to take another job is pointless. Â Any coach can resign from his contract. The NFL has leaguewide rules which require permission for a coach to resign from his contract to move laterally within the NFL (whether such rules would survive a challenge in court is an open question IMO, because they're a blatant restraint on labor). Unless Wandstedt has a non-compete covenant in his contract that specifically says he can't leave to coach in college (which I've never heard of an NFL coach having, and which also might be an unreasonable and unenforceable restraint on labor), he's free to go and coach Arkansas.
BobChalmers Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 He was. As the ILB coach. Â Corrected. He was responsible for Barnett and Sheppard.
jcbillsfan Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Wannstedt was a horrible HC at a much lower profile school. No way Arkansas goes after him. Horrible ?
cody Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Where did you acquire this bit of information? Didn't the last Arkansas coach leave the NFL less than a year after signing a long term contract?
26TrapDraw Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Talking head on EsPN just mentioned Wanny as a possible replacement HC in Arkansas. Well now we will see what kind of "character" the stache has. If he stays put and honors his commitment to Chan and the Bills he will gain respect from his team coaching staff and more importantly the fanbase. If I had to venture a guess I would say that you will see that epic porn stache pacing the sideline finishing what he started. The makings of a dominant D LV
