I hope the above is the reason. heard some transplant surgeons interviewed today. 65 is the usual cutoff but not written in stone. they consider those in very good shape that are older. cheney is not one of those. had his chest opened too many times which makes it more risky. everybody is equal except some are more equal than others. You assume. You forget that he's been getting significantly better care than almost anyone in the country for better than 10 years (and probably more like 20) at least. Still, the number of surgeries he's had on his heart, he'd have to be in phenomenal shape otherwise. And neither one of us knows the actual details of the decision - we're both just spitballing, albeit you're doing so from a better position. I am glad he got his heart, my hope is he uses these borrowed years for the good. aside: I met Ted Kennedy when he was at the DNC, he did his speech but was staying at our hospital for treatment while in town. He made it a point, before he left to wheel over to my office and say thank you for the help while here was here... he was a very nice man. When I first heard the news of the transplant my first question was, how old is Dick Cheney - I actually looked it up. I'm not a transplant surgeon, but it did strike me as odd that someone who is 71 would get an organ - I know age is a factor in where you are on the list. Its possible he was really the only good match for the heart that was available - tissue type, blood type, size, etc. all factor into who would even be eligible to receive a given heart. I think what this case does show is that you have means and have excellent health care you're more likely to get some of these scarce organs. I understand that if you can show you can get to agiven facility quickly (like via your private jet) you can increase your chances at getting a heart by being on the list at multiple facilities. Someone like Dick Cheney does have some advantages in a system that is supposed to treat everyone equally against an agreed upon eligibility criteria. I'd hate to think that Cheney got a heart over someone who should have received ahead of him because he's wealthy and powerful, but by the same token I'd hate for this whole thing to become a big political issue - politics should have nothing to do with it. The wait lists for organs are an attempt to be a egalitarian as humanly, humanely possible. But I agree personal medical history and risk factors with regard to a transplant should be the only criteria. But I will not pretend that people with means get far better accessto care and specialist than do the general masses. I do find it ironic that Liberals like to think of themselves as compassionate, egalitarian, tolerant... as opposed to Conservatives.... until it is time to be compassionate, egalitarian and intolerant... As people typed those comments, did they think for one iota "uh oh, I am becoming the very person I like to think I rally against?"
