Honestly, why waste a heart on a 71 year old... Like polishing a turd. If that was me... Give it to somebody younger... Unless he got another old foggie's used heart... Then no-harm I suppose? I did not read the article... I heard he waited a long time... I hope the above is the reason.

heard some transplant surgeons interviewed today. 65 is the usual cutoff but not written in stone. they consider those in very good shape that are older. cheney is not one of those. had his chest opened too many times which makes it more risky. everybody is equal except some are more equal than others.

Sounds like Obamacare found the first member of its 15-member Independent Payment Advisory Board.

I mean, really...maybe all they need is a pain pill.

You assume. You forget that he's been getting significantly better care than almost anyone in the country for better than 10 years (and probably more like 20) at least.

Still, the number of surgeries he's had on his heart, he'd have to be in phenomenal shape otherwise. And neither one of us knows the actual details of the decision - we're both just spitballing, albeit you're doing so from a better position.

It took a long time to get enough IV bags filled with the tears of children

I wish him a full recovery. Partisan politics and the suspicionby some of him being pure evil aside, he is a father, probably a grandfather, and has other family I am sure.

I take no pleasure is wishing death on anyone. I am glad he got his heart, my hope is he uses these borrowed years for the good.

aside: I met Ted Kennedy when he was at the DNC, he did his speech but was staying at our hospital for treatment while in town. He made it a point, before he left to wheel over to my office and say thank you for the help while here was here... he was a very nice man.

John Kerry, doosh- met him in 2004, he was at out hospital to do some photo shoot/interview deal... probably still a doosh.

ya think there may be just a few fathers and grandfathers deemed too old or too sick for transplants who are in just as much need. this IS the public test case for rationing. demand greatly outstrips supply. the patients likely to benefit the most should be the ones chosen. no other criteria should be considered...not what a nice or evil guy, not insurance and certainly not status.

I hate Dick Cheney's politics, but I wish the man well with his new heart - hard to begrudge anyone for getting a second chance at life with a new heart, regardless of politics.

When I first heard the news of the transplant my first question was, how old is Dick Cheney - I actually looked it up. I'm not a transplant surgeon, but it did strike me as odd that someone who is 71 would get an organ - I know age is a factor in where you are on the list. Its possible he was really the only good match for the heart that was available - tissue type, blood type, size, etc. all factor into who would even be eligible to receive a given heart.

I think what this case does show is that you have means and have excellent health care you're more likely to get some of these scarce organs. I understand that if you can show you can get to agiven facility quickly (like via your private jet) you can increase your chances at getting a heart by being on the list at multiple facilities. Someone like Dick Cheney does have some advantages in a system that is supposed to treat everyone equally against an agreed upon eligibility criteria. I'd hate to think that Cheney got a heart over someone who should have received ahead of him because he's wealthy and powerful, but by the same token I'd hate for this whole thing to become a big political issue - politics should have nothing to do with it.

My understanding is that the normal wait time for a heart averages 6 months. Cheney waited 2 years. It would not appear that he received any special treatment.

The wait lists for organs are an attempt to be a egalitarian as humanly, humanely possible. But I agree personal medical history and risk factors with regard to a transplant should be the only criteria.

But I will not pretend that people with means get far better accessto care and specialist than do the general masses. Not better care, but often to the front of the line as others wait.... sans organs, I have never seen evidence of better access in that case

Cheney had been on a waiting list for a heart transplant for 20 months, which was a bit longer than the average wait time of six months to a year

I ain't one for book learnin but ain't 20 months a lot longer then 6 months to a year?

I HATE THE MEDIA

The comments on that article really underscore the fact that the internet is chock-full of knuckleheads.

I do find it ironic that Liberals like to think of themselves as compassionate, egalitarian, tolerant... as opposed to Conservatives.... until it is time to be compassionate, egalitarian and intolerant...

As people typed those comments, did they think for one iota "uh oh, I am becoming the very person I like to think I rally against?"

Empathy and Compassion does not require an accpetable name on the donor list....
