JÂy RÛßeÒ Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 I don't know what other options are out there for backup QB, but the fact that Chan would not put in a healthy Thigpen over a Fitz with broken ribs is very telling.
Kelly the Dog Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 I don't know what other options are out there for backup QB, but the fact that Chan would not put in a healthy Thigpen over a Fitz with broken ribs is very telling. I have no way of knowing this but I would bet that Chan is completely comfortable with Thigpen and Brad Smith as his two QBs and doesn't think it's an issue whatsoever. That doesn't mean they won't draft one if they really like him because they really do not have a young QB project outside of Levi that virtually all teams carry. But I sincerely doubt that Chan has many if any reservations about Thigpen as a back-up, and the fans reactions to him in pre-season and mop up duty are grossly overrated. I think the ribs thing was a problem for Fitz but not enough to take him out or keep him out of the game. He surely told Chan it was nothing (as he has repeatedly told everyone that it was nothing) and that he could play. I think the injuries to the line, and WR and RB, combined with the defense collapsing, were a much greater factor in Fitz's erratic play the last half of the year than his ribs, although they all played a role.
Captain Hindsight Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Fitz started 31 of the last 32. If there is a position im not worried about its backup qb
Billsrhody Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Fitz started 31 of the last 32. If there is a position im not worried about its backup qb To be fair.. i bet thats what the colts were thinking 2 years ago.
Captain Hindsight Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 To be fair.. i bet thats what the colts were thinking 2 years ago. To be fair, Thigpen is way better than Curtis Painter
Billsrhody Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 To be fair, Thigpen is way better than Curtis Painter If he is then its not by much. Thigpen had one decent year in 2008 where he completed 55% of his passes and through 18 and 12 (TD/INT). Other than that he hasnt done anything. Regardless, just because a guy has started every game for the last 2 seasons doesn't mean he cant go down in the next one.
JÂy RÛßeÒ Posted March 20, 2012 Author Posted March 20, 2012 Fitz started 31 of the last 32. If there is a position im not worried about its backup qb I think if Chan had more confidence in Thigpen we would've seen him rather than a compromised Fitz late in the year. I find it hard to believe that the broken rib(s) were unknown to the team.

John from Riverside Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 I for one am worried about it I am worried that the reports of Fitz being hurt are true and we left him in the game.....it horrifies me because that is what a backup is for....a pitch reliever that can win you a few games a year if need be..... We thought so much of Thigpen that we threw a hurt QB (if he was) to the wolves for fear of going to the backup
apuszczalowski Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Players play hurt ALL THE TIME. This isn't something new, and no proof that the team had no faith in Thigpen, just that Fitz may have been injuured but he felt it was something he could play through and didn't need to miss time. Players (especially the top guys) are stubborn and very few of them want to come out of a game, even when hurt.
K-9 Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 In the immortal words of Al Campanis, I think Quinn "lacks the necessities" to run Gailey's kind of offense with it's critical dependence on pre and post snap reads. He just doesn't strike me as the sharpest tool in the shed when I watch him play. Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh, but that's what it seems like. GO BILLS!!!

Facts bear out that the injury had a huge adverse effect on his game though. It's the coach's duty to all the players to put the team on the field that has the best chance to win. And that's exactly my point - Chan apparently felt he had a better chance to win with the Fitz he had than with a healthy Thigpen, and that's not going to be acceptable this year.

Was it Fitzs "Injury" that made him look bad, or all the injuries around him? Maybe they didn't see much of a difference between how he did things pre and post "Injury", and that the poor play was more because of the lower quality of players filling in for injured starters?

Thigpen's one decent year is better than anything Quinn has ever accomplished in the NFL.
