John Belucheese Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 I'd much rather talk about Jackson's heroism, great play and running style but Stevie's signing is illusory without Fred Jackson in the backfield. Now i realize there are many that think backs are a dime a dozen or that Fred's age doesn't warrant a long term deal; Additionally there's been a spark from Spiller but Fred Jackson is the Bills. Marshawn's signing is also a slap in the face to Fred. Fred is the better of the two. Now Nix has stated in the past that "we want to keep Fred and that he is a big part of what we are trying to to do in Buffalo" however he also seemed agitated when asked if and when Fred will be rewarded w a new contract and the response: "Last time i checked he's currently under contract for another year isn't he?" We cant fool around with the heart and soul of the teams ATLAS. Fair deal: 21 million over 3 years. 10 million guaranteed.

He is under contract another year. Free Agency starts in a couple of weeks, then the draft, then signing drafted players. I would be shocked if they get around to Fred before summer at least - no reason to. Nix has stated numerous times that he wants to sign Jackson to an extension. Jackson has been told this. I am sure he will get to it at the right time.
NewEra Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 That's too much money and I'm one of Biggest advocates for resigning him. It wont take that much.
JoeF Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 (edited) Keep in mind that without the injury Freddie may have been headed to an MVP year and that we were 1-5 without him and 5-5 with him. Based on quick analysis of the new contracts and discounting 25% for Fred's age -- you are looking at $6M a year current value (top tier at $8-10M). Fred signed an extension for 4 years/$7.5M total in 2009 covering 09, 10, 11 and 12. I would add 2 years and $15M to the existing contract--$10M up front and keep him through 2014. I think that is fair for everyone--takes care of Fred without killing us. His base is likely about $2M for this year so you are giving him $10M in cash up front and then paying him $2.5M in base in 2013, 2014 which is back up money. End result, over six years he will make $22.5M - the first two of those were as a part-time starter and the third year he is a FT player but injury shortened. He likely has 3 years of good productivity left. Edited March 5, 2012 by JoeF
Mr. WEO Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Fred is already paid for through 2012. And he's coming off an injury. Why would they do this?
Rob's House Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Fred is already paid for through 2012. And he's coming off an injury. Why would they do this? This is annoying. It's not like he's coming off a blown knee, ruptured achilles, or compound fracture. He'll be fine. The injury is a non-issue.
SelmonSmith6378 Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 10 million? That's like, Peyton M<anning in his prime money. I was thinking more on the lines of...say, 7 mil?
John from Riverside Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 We are going to get him signed before the start of the season.....and no way he costs that much coming off of an injury at his age.
DrDawkinstein Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 There is a long list of Bills Free Agents, and then open market Free Agents, that should be priority over Freddie.
NewEra Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 1330988012[/url]' post='2396108']Fred is already paid for through 2012. And he's coming off an injury. Why would they do this? Because he's our best player
GOBILLS78 Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 We all love Freddie, but his contract should be on the back-back-back burner. If I were the GM, I'd certainly want to see how this year plays out. He's not going to command big money on next year's free-agent market, considering his age. And if he leaves, there's Spiller in waiting.
DrDawkinstein Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Because he's our best player Fine, but they have an entire year to get it done. However, there are a number of players/positions that need to be addressed now.
SelmonSmith6378 Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Because he's our best player Perhaps...But he's also growing old. And you must know all about what happens to running backs once they hit the 30+ meter.

He won't sign for less than 20M guaranteed. They'll end up at 17.5M guaranteed over 3 years. If that's too rich for you then say goodbye to Fred.
Danny Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 As long as they get it done before the start of the season everyone comes out a winner.
Mr. WEO Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 This is annoying. It's not like he's coming off a blown knee, ruptured achilles, or compound fracture. He'll be fine. The injury is a non-issue. Relax, it was a very simple question. Anyway, how do you know this? He's not a young guy like Stevie. How do you know he hasn't peaked? Because he's our best player He may be that, which makes him all the more of a bargain. Why tie up more money in a player who is under contract--and with the way that Spiller subbed for him (according to many here), he can't reasonably hold out this off season. People seem to want to reward him emotionally (and I do too), but financially, it makes no sense at all.
DrDawkinstein Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 4 years/$22mil would be my "take it or leave it" offer. Signing a RB through the age of 35? Cmon.
John from Riverside Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 I really am not understanding the teeth wrenching over this..... - We resigned WIlliams to a long term deal - We resigned our starting RT to a long term deal - We resigned Fitz to a long term deal - We resigned our number 1 receiver to a long term deal The Bills ARE resigning their players.....Jackson has already been told he will be extended....it will happen. Actually....when you think about it for all the bashing Nix has taken on this board he has been a man of his word. He resigns his own starting caliber players instead of letting them get away like the bills have in the past. The team appears to be headed in the right direction.
Rob's House Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Relax, it was a very simple question. Anyway, how do you know this? He's not a young guy like Stevie. How do you know he hasn't peaked? It's one thing to argue he's peaked, too old, under contract, etc. Whether I agree with it or not, those are at least reasonable arguments. Given the nature of Fred's injury it is not a concern and it's annoying to keep seeing that used as an excuse as though all injuries are equal. That's all.
