The smithsonians are great and free. Take a walk through old town in Alexandria as well. Leesburg has some nice wine trails. Pentagon city area has some nice restaurants and shopping. If the weather is nice go over to National Harbor for a nice walk

Wineries??? Virginia??? You're not serious!

Uhmm..why yes he is quite serious, and surely you should know this. And no, i will not stop calling you Shirley!

Wine Enthusiast listed VA as a Top 10 Wine Travel Destination on the world for 2012.

Than there is this from Fox News

Mead..onto DC and what to do..you know the obvious..but if you have never been to the Newsuem..do it. Yes there is an admission charge, but worth every penny. Go early in the morning, and plan on staying through the day..it is that friggen good.

I recommend the Air and Space Museum, but go to the one in Dulles, not the one on the mall.

The National Museum of the Marine Corps is awesome as well. Head south on 95 to Quantico..signs everywhere. Son (10) and I went about year ago, spent 5 hours and only left as we were late for a game. One of the Docents was a Marine who actually was part of the initial wave at Iwo..we talked to him for 30 minutes..an experience my son will never forget.

This is a great site to find out what plays are happening, what exhibitions are on at what Museums, restaurant recommendations etc. Can get this as an app as well, great to have on your phone/ipad.I use it quite frequently.

Wine Enthusiast is a little like most other "Awards" nowadays, JD Power comes to mind...if you pay them they give you an "award."

I lived in N VA for 8 years in the 70's, and now in the Richmond area for the last 8 years, and just can't see the attraction to Virginia wine. Moved here from Seattle where they do have some great wineries and wines...but that's my opinion, and wine taste/enjoyment can be very personal.

I prefer the West Coast wines by far over anything I've found in the East. They cost a lot more here because of the shipping but generally worth it. That could improve IF the US ever gets a sincere Energy policy in place.

Go into DC, and you can find some imported Wines, many times less expensive than our domestic brands. Check out some of the liquor stores on Connecticut Ave., near the MD. line. Try Magruders on Conn. Ave. They often have in-store wine tasting, online ads, and they have SALES too. Virginia has ABC stores with zero selection!

Virginia is for lovers, just not Wine lovers! Enjoy your trip, it's getting more springlike by the day...not so much by night, but by day!

Both based on your opinion.

If you haven't done so in the past, I highly recommend Arlington National Cemetery and the changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown. It is a very moving experience on many levels.

Excellent suggestion..prolly top o the list.

BTW, I recently toured the Holocaust museum again with the family, prolly ben at least 10 years sense my last visit..i know people say don't go unless you are prepared to be down for the remainder of the day, but I do not get that. The new exhibit on Nazi propaganda is very, very, good.
