Now..that is the one thing i really don't want my kids doing that i did..but i was in college when i did that. Also, hopping cars prolly wasn't the smartest way to get around back in the winter...

Yeah, no doubt about that. I had a buddy in college who used to hitchhike home from school on I-95 and I-91. Crazy. He always got picked up too.

Most kids would be well-served to walk 8 miles a day.

This parent's actions only seem obscene in our culture of driving .5 miles to the supermarket for a gallon of milk. There's nothing wrong with it. If junior gets picked up by Stranger Danger...well, that could've happened on the school playground too. World's never going to be inherently safe.

Mom will be under review of child services forever.

Mom should get an Award!

If the "arresting" officer could spend his/her time getting the Perv's off the streets, so they were safe for a 10 year old, maybe this wouldn't be an issue.

Sad to say, I could take the NFT all over Buffalo when I was 10, and walk anywhere that I wanted. I know times were different then, but the fact that our streets are not safe for our children is the far bigger story here.

Times aren't that different, if you don't count the 24x7 news media that turns every local issue you never heard about 30 years ago into a week-long, national story.

I used to love walking ome from school every day. Best part of the school day honestly. You could enjoy the sights and sounds during the Spring and Fall, and I got into snowball wars with the other kids. She shouldn't have been arrested. I could understand if it was down a busy road, but it sounds like the kid had to walk through the suburbs.

I like this quote, as it backs up the car vs plane thing. My wife and I went on our honeymoon to London in 2001 -- a month after 9/11 -- and had most of our relatives telling us we should cancel the trip.

That's why casinos stay open. Most people are absolutely incapable of measuring risk.

Or any laws of probability at all, really. Slot machines exist because old women can't grasp the concept of discrete, independent outcomes of consecutive events.

That and the flashing lights.

That, and you can gamble all day and lose a very predictable amount of money.

It's a bit more of a wild card when you saddle up to the craps table.

Don't discount the noise. My grandmother plays the slots because she likes the noise.

But then, she's not deluding herself either. She tells everyone "I spend $200 a month on the slots because I like the noise. I'm 94, I can't take it with me, it's my money. If you don't like it...tough ****!"

Grandma's pretty cool.

I'd like to start a casino for older folks who err toward efficient pragmatism. It would just be a giant row of random number generators hooked up to ATMs.
