Mayocks new take

Recommended Posts

Didn't Mayock also say Maybin would be a star in this league? These guys do not know anything. They just have really good jobs.

Nope. You should get your facts straight before some poster mimics your nonsense "Mayock said Maybin would be a star" gets posted over and over. And Mayock is the best in the business. So once again, get your facts straight

Well if you're gonna admonish Nucci for not having his facts straight, I'll admonish you for not reading the entirety of a short thread before sharpshooting someone else… or maybe you were just piling on?

FYI, Nucci was corrected twice for his comment… in reply #9 and then again in reply #14. Nucci then returned to this topic in reply #17 to acknowledge and apologize for being in error.

So kudos to Nucci.

Even the guys that have the top jobs on NFL teams as evaluators are -- at BEST -- right about players 50% of the time.

Mayock to me is the best of the analysts but it is inevitable that he will miss on all kinds of players.

Pointing out Mayock's mistakes is a bit of a silly exercise for the most part.

However the criticism of his strong advocacy of Blaine Gabbert I feel is legit… firstly because he seemed to see something in Gabbert that no one else saw… and also because the enthusiasm of his advocacy seemed a little over-the-top.

Less than one year ago, Mayock was saying that Gabbert was the first quarterback on his board and that the Panthers should take him first overall. He said all sorts of crazy-good comments about Gabbert that was simply not in line with anyone else's opinions of Gabbert.

Gabbert may still turn out to be a great QB, who knows. And Gabbert was taken 10th overall. That's VERY highly rated no matter who you are or what position you play. There are so many players that turn out to be really good that do not start out well, and a good amount that start out well that never play that well again. Myself, I never really watched him so i have no feeling about him either way.

People also rag on Mayock for what he said about Newton but what I saw him say a lot was that he loved him as a player, he wasn't sure if he wanted it enough to put in the time and effort to do what it takes to be an NFL QB. That was a very legitimate stance. I personally always liked Newton and thought he would be a good pro but I didn't know if he had the mental capacity either and didnt think it would happen right away. I don't think anyone did.

IFI remember correctly Mayock had a difficult time judging the 2011 season's crop of QB's after the combine, and even stated such. The reason being is that some of the QB's ran the spread offense in college, and weren't pure pocket passers per se like Stafford and Bradford in previous years.

Gabbert graded out better then all the rest, but then there are other intangibles to take into consideration, like the "it" factor that Tim Tebow has. Looks like Newton also has the "it" factor, plus physically he was off the charts. A bigger stronger Mike Vick. Let not forget how limited Newtons knowledge of play calling was in college. His OC held up a sign on the sideline with numbers on it and Newton read the sign and called the play, and there were only a handful of different play calls.

Gabbert may still prove to be the best of that class as his skill set is better suited to today's NFL passing game, time will tell.

PS, didn't find anything by Mayock after the combine but did find this interesting read by SI

PPS. NFN but I've got to wonder if the Bills scouts- HC- GM were just a bit more secretive about who they really wanted to draft last year they could have gotten Newton as Carolina wasn't totally sold on him until they saw the Bills going gung ho for the guy.
