This summer, superhero movies are the premiere focus once again, and this time they are even bigger. Animation is big this summer as well with four animated movies to land between June through August. Sequels are not as prominent as in year's past, but they will have a presence, and they are plenty of big names both in front and behind the camera. So without further ado here is what we have to look forward to, once the month of May arrives. For the first time Disney will get it's studio name brandished with it's first Marvel property "The Avengers". Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner & Samuel L. Jackson lead the strong ensemble cast and Joss Whedon directs. Nick Fury and the international agency S.H.I.E.L.D. bring together a team of super humans to form The Avengers to help save the Earth from Loki & his various membered army. Ever since 2008 when Marvel released "Iron Man", they have steadily built up every main character's movie leading up to what is to be a crowning achievement: a movie that will have Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and The Hulk in one film. Marvel is showing rival comic brand DC how easy it is to get a group of big name superheroes into one film, as a Justice League movie seems to be merely a dream. While DC still wrestles with that dream, they do have the caped crusader to fall back on. For what is to be the third and final time, Warner Bros., star Christian Bale and director Christopher Nolan bring us the latest Batman tale "The Dark Knight Rises". Eight years after the events of "The Dark Knight", the terrorist leader Bane arrives in Gotham City, pushing it and its police force to their limits, forcing its former hero Batman to resurface after taking the fall for Harvey Dent's crimes. Once again the ensemble cast is loaded with talent: Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt & Marion Cotillard. Nolan & Co. have the unenviable task of topping their last Batman outing, but no doubt fans will be turning out in strong numbers in support of this strong series. In 2002 Marvel had one of it's own dreams come to life on the big screen: "Spider-Man". Now in 2012, that popular series continues, but oddly enough as a reboot, as they release "The Amazing Spider-Man". Gone are director Sam Raimi and stars Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst & James Franco; in are stars Andrew Garfield & Emma Stone and director Marc Webb(who?) the man who brought us "500 Days of Summer". In this outing, Peter Parker finds a clue that might help him understand why his parents disappeared when he was young. His path puts him on a collision course with Dr. Curt Connors, his father's former partner. Marvel is going with a youthful pre-Daily Bugle Peter Parker, Gwen Stacy is in over Mary Jane Watson, and having the spider web as a creation instead of a mutation. Still many people question why we have to start over again, as this franchise is only 10 years old. The rest of the cast includes, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Embeth Davidtz & Denis Leary. As I stated earlier four animated movies will be out this summer and as always you have to watch out for the next Disney/Pixar event. This time it is the Scottish tale "Brave". Determined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse. After two straight years of sequels and a mild reception to last year's "Cars 2", fans are glad to get something a little different. Starring the voice talents of Kelly MacDonald, Emma Thompson, Kevin McKidd, Robbie Coltrane & Julie Walters. Where there's summer there is sequels, and while there are not as many this year as last, people will take notice of them. Director Ridley Scott returns to the franchise that made him famous with his "Alien" prequel, "Prometheus". A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race. Starring Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace, Guy Pearce, Patrick Wilson & Idris Elba. After 10 years since the last installment, Will Smith & Tommy Lee Jones reunite for "Men In Black III". Agent J travels in time to MIB's early years in the 1960s, to stop an alien from assassinating his friend Agent K and changing history. Josh Brolin & Emma Thompson also star. Dwayne Johnson & Bruce Willis leap aboard the sequel "G.I. Joe: Retaliation". Which looks to be taking a more serious approach than it's predecessor; Jeremy Renner steps in for Matt Damon with "The Bourne Legacy"; Sylvester Stallone returns in "The Expendables 2"; and Sony enlists Colin Farell to lead the re-make of "Total Recall". Dreamworks continues it's animal stow-away series with "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted", while 20th Century Fox continues their prehistoric mammals animated series with "Ice Age 4: Continental Drift". For all of you that want more than just sequels & superheroes, fear not, there is a good amount of stuff that is on the more original side. Tim Burton & Johnny Depp team up again, this time bringing the 1966-71 supernatural soap opera "Dark Shadows" to the big screen. A gothic-horror tale centering on the life of vampire Barnabas Collins and his run-ins with various monsters, witches, werewolves and ghosts. Another deep ensemble cast includes Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jackie Earle Haley, Helena Bonham Carter, Chloe Grace Moretz, Jonathan Frid & Christopher Lee. Tim Burton also lends his hand as executive producer to another supernatural themed film, as 20th Century Fox and director Timur Bekmembetov bring us "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter". Based on the novel by Seth Grahame-Smith, President Lincoln's mother is killed by a supernatural creature, which fuels his passion to crush vampires and their slave-owning helpers. Starring Benjamin Walker, Rufus Sewell, Dominic Cooper & Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Toy & Game maker company Hasbro teams up with Universal to bring us, "Battleship". A fleet of ships is forced to do battle with an armada of unknown origins in order to discover and thwart their destructive goals. The diverse cast includes Liam Neeson, Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker & Rihanna. Universal also gives us a famous fairy tale with a more serious tone in "Snow White and the Huntsman". In a twist to the fairy tale, the Huntsman ordered to take Snow White into the woods to be killed winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen. This will be our second Snow White movie of the year. Starring Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Ian McShane & Charlize Theron. Warner Bros. brings the hit broadway musical "Rock of Ages" to the big screen. Set in 1987 Los Angeles, Drew and Sherrie are two young people chasing their dreams in the big city. When they meet, it's love at first sight, though their romance will face a series of challenges. Another big ensemble cast includes, Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Malin Akerman, Mary J. Blige, Alec Baldwin & Tom Cruise. If you want comedy, you got plenty. Sacha Baron Cohen is "The Dictator". The heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed. Adam Sandler plays a father who moves in with his son right before his wedding and soon begins sparring with his daughter-in-law, in "That's My Boy". Will Ferrell & Zach Galifianakis are two rival South Carolina politicians with presidential aspirations who tangle with one another, in "Dog Fight". Steve Carell & Keira Knightley star in "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World". As an asteroid nears Earth, a man finds himself alone after his wife leaves in a panic. He decides to take a road trip to reunite with his high school sweetheart. Accompanying him is a neighbor who inadvertently puts a wrench in his plan. Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer & Matthew McConaughey star in the male stripper comedy "Magic Mike", directed by Steven Soderbergh. Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill & Billy Crudup are suburban dads who form a neighborhood watch group to get time away from their families, only to discover a plot to destroy Earth, in "Neighborhood Watch". "Ted" is a story centered on a man and his teddy bear, who comes to life as the result of a childhood wish. Starring Mark Wahlberg. Also: Passengers aboard a flight across the Pacific Ocean encounter a supernatural force, in "7500"; A misunderstood boy who can speak with the dead, takes on ghosts, zombies and grown-ups to save his town from a centuries-old curse, in the animated feature "ParaNorman"; and a childless couple bury a box in their backyard, containing all of their wishes for an infant. Soon, a child is born, though Timothy Green is not all that he appears, Jennifer Garner & Joel Edgarton star in "The Odd Life of Timothy Green. I don't know how you load that many characters into one movie. They did so well with most of the lead ins (except the Hulk screw up), so I'll give it a chance. I'm sure I've said it on here a few times, but Batman is clearly the highlight of the year for me. True, but none of them have already been established as headliners. No one was going into those movies wishing for a Storm movie. Marvel has done an outstanding job with all of their superhero movies as of late, and I have plenty of faith that they will deliver the goods again with "The Avengers", although I do understand the big risk involved with it. Especially since they are adding Black Widow & Hawkeye into the mix. As for Batman(yes he is a hero, not a superhero) this movie will be a bittersweet moment as it is the last one we will get for quite awhile, unless Warner Bros. has a new plan to keep it going. Christopher Nolan has set the bar so high for this franchise that it will be very difficult to keep it at it's current pace. Ok, I'll bite. What the hell? Please tell me Jefferson Davis is a vampire. I recommend you check out the book. It's an easy read and despite it's silly title, a very good story. I am looking forward to seeing this one, and I think it could be a "sleeper" hit this summer. Christopher and his brother have set the standard from which all superhero/action films need to be measured against. They proved that the super hero genre can be cerebral and not just fancy explosions and a plot written by a six-year-old (or Michael Bay). I'd say that there isn't a more bankable director in Hollywood right now than Christopher Nolan. Think of every film he's done and the success he's had. They are starting it over because they want to get rid of some of the stupid stuff like the web spinners being a mutation rather than an invention by an ingenious teenage. Unfortunately they appear to be leaving in movie stuff of having hero unmasked good part of movie (like they did in Iron Man and Captain America as well). Unfortunately they appear to be leaving in movie stuff of having hero unmasked good part of movie (like they did in Iron Man and Captain America as well). The only thing they need to undo is that trainwreck 3rd movie. They probably would have been better off abandoning the character for a few more years since there was nowhere to go with the series after that one. Personally I am tired with the "Alien" series and I think they should just let it die, as I can not imagine what else they can do to keep it fresh.
