It's really up to the insurance company who underwrote the insurance Kroger had out on the thing - if the insurance decides not to pay then Kroger has to pony up the full $10K or get the bad PR - bad spot to be in.....

My ex ran a basketball tourney for charity one time; it was a lot of fun and some really good teams showed up. They did a half court contest for $10k too....guy just missed, in and out. Afterwards she realized the paperwork never made it to the insurance company. Oops....would have been a big problem if the guy had drained the shot.

His foot was clearly over the half court line when he released the shot.

When I was in high school for our basketball games when students came into the game they would have a box to leave your student ids. They would pick 3 ids out at halftime for halfcourt shots. The prizes I think were $500, TV, Camcorder & if you made it you would get to pick one. They would always tell you before you shot if your foot goes over the line your disqualified.
