BuffaloBill Posted January 4, 2012 Share Posted January 4, 2012 Each year there are usually only one or two QB’s coming out of college that are considered “NFL ready.” Yet the NFL has become a QB and passing league. The sheer lack of talent at the position almost assures the teams with top QB’s a ride to the playoffs. I would like to see the NFL start to address this lack of talent by making it mandatory that every NFL team carry a QB prospect on the practice squad. By doing so the NFL makes pool of available talent at the QB position larger. The college game is only making the gap larger given the proliferation of spread offenses and a lesser emphasis on the passing game in general. Before free agency days QB’s generally rode the bench for three or more years before seeing action with an NFL team. The common line then was that it took a long time to learn the NFL game. I have to wonder how many more quality QB’s there might be if they had the opportunity to develop rather than being rushed to the field in a sink or swim mode. Look at what NFL Europe did for the careers of Warner and Delhomme. While speculation, one can certainly assume they may not have done as well if they simply went straight into the fire of an NFL game. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

True that Warren Moon, Joe Theisman, Doug Flutie and others have come through the CFL but it is a different game and not noted as a direct pipeline into the NFL. I still believe the pool of NFL ready QB's must be expanded. I would say that even increasing the PS by one player to allow for the change I proposed is advisable.
