thewildrabbit Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 I know there are a slew of Ryan Fitzpatrick threads over the coarse of the season with questions about his arm strength, his accuracy. I am offering a different perspective. We all saw that Fitz can be terrific at times, like the first QTR of that New England game. The guy played pretty much brilliantly, helping the Bills get a 21 point lead. Threw very accurately, and exhibited good arm strength. First QTR, first 3 drives TD,TD,TD Second QTR, then the next 3 series, a punt, downs, missed FG Third QTR, INT, INT. Fourth QTR, Punt, INT, INT So now game over, Fitz sucked right? So what happened, why did the Bills tank the other 3 QTRs? Well to start with the primary receiver in Stevie Johnson was benched right after that third TD in the first QTR. Then at some point Scott Chandler went down with an injury. Then, to make matters worse the play caller went pass happy into the teeth of the Patriots nickle and dime packages. The Patriots have one of the worst defense in the league, but when your offense goes one dimensional its so much easier for them to defend just one thing. So what happens is that the more pressure the QB is under the during the game more he tends to hurry his throw, lose rythum. This can happen to ANY QB in the league. It happened to Tom Brady against the Bills earlier in the season where he threw the 4 picks. Now imagine how bad he would look if you took Wess Welker and Rob Gronkowski out of that first game A lot of us fans were question the play calling over the coarse of that 7 game skid. I can only think that Gailey has so much to deal with during a game that his mind must go numb as some point, calling the offensive plays while also trying to focus on defense and special teams. We all know several things about Fitz, one of which is he is a very very smart guy, right? Basically aced his wonderlic test. Chan says he has never seen such a fast learner, teach him something once and he picks it right up. So obviously Fitz is smarter and more intelligent then Jim Kelley, right? Then why not let Ryan Fitzpatrick call his own plays like Jimbo used to do, Levy and Marchibroda allowed Kelly to call all his own plays, which allowed a faster "no huddle" as the starting offense almost never changed personnel during each series. He is the smartest guy on offense, he sets the protections and already calls the audibles if he see's something he doesn't like that the defense is showing. By allowing Fitz more control over his situation during the game it should settle him down and focus on reading the defense and concentrate on how to beat that defense. Payton Manning calls his own plays so its not unheard of for the QB to do that nowadays. This would allow Gailey to focus more on managing the entire game, defense, offense, and special teams. C'mon Buddy, I wanna see that freaking baby born this year....LET FITZ CALL ALL HIS OWN PLAYS!!
jjmac Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 If you noticed, for most, if not all of those 21 points, the Patriots went single high safety, man underneath. The switched after that, and that's when our offensive troubles began.
thewildrabbit Posted January 3, 2012 Author Posted January 3, 2012 If you noticed, for most, if not all of those 21 points, the Patriots went single high safety, man underneath. The switched after that, and that's when our offensive troubles began. The Pats still played it into the second QTR, the Patriots DC is a boob to the Nnnth degree, just about as bad as George Edwards was. he played man quite a bit this year when he should have been in zone or cover. But then Hairston allowed a sack in the 2nd QTR and everything seemed to go downhill in that series after that, plus a holding call that was negated by the sack. result of the sack=18 yards loss & a punt Then in the next series the Bills driving with 2 big pass plays down to the Patriots 34 yard line and the center, Colin Brown who? Flubs the shotgun snap, which results in a 2nd down and 19! Bills go for it on 4th down and 12 from the Patriots 36, ... Then the Bills drove down to the Patriots 28 and attempted a FG, still up 21-14. New kicker missed. The Bills were able to move the ball al thru the 2nd QTR, its just that the players just kept screwing up. Plus Fitz was losing his rythum due to getting much more pressure, he scrambled for a few first downs in that QTR. Still, you don't think it didn't matter not having Stevie Johnson or Scott Chandler? The Bills owned that first half, 18 1st downs to 11, 60 yards rushing-to 60 yards rushing same, Bills 295 total yards- Patriots 184 yards. Patriots one turnover ToP Bills 18:29 to Patriots 11:31

NewEra Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 Did he miss Stevie and chandler weeks 8-12? Did he miss Stevie weeks 12-16? Did he throw 1/2 of his passes high/low/wide during our losing streak? Did he throw screen passes in the dirt? Did he underthrow 2 passes which led to picks and lost us the giants game? Everyone loves to talk about Stevie's dropped pass vs the jets2, did anyone remember fitz throwing wide with Stevie WIDE open in the end zone a couple plays later? Did anyone notice how his arm got much less accurate and weaker as the season went on? Did anyone notice how we went 0-17 in 3rd conversion at one points, he was the qb all 17 plays. Did you realize that he's not a good qb? He's a decent qb, that MIGHT be ale to lead a team loaded with talent to the playoffs, only to throw several picks and lose a game for us. Let's stop all the fitz praise. He deserves praise for his first few games and a couple QUARTERS after that. I realize that he will most likely be our qb next year because we won't be in the position to draft a stud (unless you think Tannehill is a stud. He'll definitely be on the board!). There aren't any FAs to go after worth anything. Hopefully we can grab one next year and build up the talent on defense, WR and OL. P.S. fitz isn't very good.

Buffalo Barbarian Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 (edited) Wonder how much it would take to trade up for Luck? Who threw 90% last night and if it wasn't for his kicker would have won last night. His decision making, and clutch throws are what separates him from all the rest. Thoner7 Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 yea New Era - best synopses I have seen. Wonder how much it would take to trade up for Luck? Who through 90% last night and if it wasn't for his kicker would have won last night. His decision making, and clutch throws are what separates him from all the rest. Prefer Luck but wouldnt mind RG3. Trade the whole draft for Luck, half of it for RG3. At least put the offer out there.
'64 Bills Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 we really don't have a true HC. We have an offensive co-ordinator trying to run an entire team. When the Pats scored you could feel the air go out of the Bills. The time called for running plays - smash mouth stuff. Run the ball and the clock. UGH!

Hey man, the QB you think would have played brilliantly for this team the last 8 weeks.... doesn't exist!!! Not with this current set of WR's, not with the current play caller. You seem to lay the entire fault for this TEAM losing at the feet of the QB. Its not all the QB's fault. Clearly you and your cohorts think its all the QB's fault, and has absolutely nothing to do with the play calling, the lack of utilizing running game past the first half, the inferior set of wide receivers. Did anyone notice how when the opposing defense is in constant pass defensive plays, like nickel and dime packages that the Bills play caller just kept forcing the QB to try and win the game? This is the exact same stuff we used to see with the known moron Turk Schonert calling plays with Trent Edwards and JP Losman. Constant shotgun, constant pass plays when the QB is clearly under duress. Only Schonert would call for seep passing plays when he was never given time by his O line to throw deep. Why do you think Fitz was scrambling more in the second QTR of that Patriot game? Nobody open, Patriot pass rush closing in? I'm not making excuses for the QB play, all I'm doing is stating the play calling has been putting the QB in constant bad situations, ALL YEAR LONG!!. WR#2 Brad Smith - Davis Nelson - Ruvell Martin(2nd leading receiver, 4-42) -Kamar Aiken WR#1 Stevie Johnson - Naaman Roosevelt - Derek Hagan (Bills leading receiver in Pats game, 7 for 89) TE Scott Chandler (3-29) - Fendi Onobun - Kevin Brock wow, look at those names, look at that stellar WR corps, the Packers should be so lucky to have that many pro bowlers on it . Jeez even the 3rd string QB is listed as the #2 WR P.S. Do you realize Fitz plays on a not very good team, where the play caller would rather use the RB more as a WR then a RB because he benched the only real decent WR

At least put the offer out there. Maybe 2 firsts and two seconds. Most teams wouldn't want all they late round picks and it would allow us to stay in the draft and still get some good quality. However we would have to be real players in free agency; re-sign Stevie and others of ours, get WR Mike Wallace, WR Wes Welker ( to get his play here and take away from the pats ) DE Mario Williams and CB Cortland Finnegan. The 43 OLB market is real weak so our 3rd round pick should be Lavonte David from Nebraska who made plays all day in his bowl game and through out the season.

Jeez BB, this team is so far away from being a top team. yet only a good draft and free agency from competing. Those two firsts and two seconds could really hamstring this team. Plus you would still have a bad set of WR's, a pretty bad O line, a bad defense. #1 Riley Reiff this year. #2 Alshon Jeffery this year Or Dwayne Allen Plus a #1 & #2, 2013 for a rookie QB who will just get hammered behind this line, with this coach calling nothing but pass plays.... what a waste of a draft pick...or multiple picks

I think we have one of the better lines in the League and with the WRs I got him he'd be off and running (or throwing)and you just use FA to take care of the lost picks and in 2014 go back to building through the draft. Although Chan might get him killed by throwing all day but that's another story. Besides with all the bad drafts we've had minus last year, it wouldn't be a loss at all. C'mon Buddy, I wanna see that freaking baby born this year....LET FITZ CALL ALL HIS OWN PLAYS!! What I'd like to see is someone twist Chan's arm into agreeing he can not manage both head coach and OC/playcalling duties, and get him a real OC. It's been pointed out, correctly, that Modkins is essentially a Gailey assistant, Nix is a Gailey cronie, and there are effectively NO checks and balances on the offensive play calling. There's no question in my mind that Fitz, given the responsibility and appropriate self-scouting info, could call his own plays. There's considerable question in my mind as to whether that's a wise course of action. Fitz had a different path into the league - he's never had a role before which demanded he put extra effort into developing his physical skill set and he's likely never had much help in developing it. And IMO that's where he needs to put his extra effort and time this off season and next season - he needs the best personal trainer and coach on mechanics he can find, and he needs to throw throw throw in realistic situations, where the receiver is on the move, where he's under pressure, not tossing to receivers who run out, stop, and turn around. And as the season wears on, he needs to put extra time in the weight room, training room, and throwing to make sure his strength and mechanics don't regress. On the principle that each person only has so much time, especially during the season, I think it would be a mistake for Fitz and a mistake for the Bills to give him that dual role at this point. It would also be a huge mistake for the Bills not to bring in someone with the experience and stature to question Gailey. In fact, worst case scenario - consider that Cortez, in his QB's interests, may have questioned Gailey's play calling and pass dependence with an injury-decimated OL and WR, and that may be cause-and-effect in why he's going out the door. Best case scenario, someone is saying "this guy did nothing to help our boys improve their mechanics, let's get someone who can".

Do you realize Fitz plays on a not very good team, where the play caller would rather use the RB more as a WR then a RB because he benched the only real decent WR To clarify things for you: our defense sucked. Our dc sucked. Our coaches fail miserably at coaching our players up. Our HC abandons the run too fast. Our WR unit sucks minus Stevie. Injuries have decimated our team on both sides of the ball. Our depth is nonexistant. Fitz is a limited QB that was successful for a few games before the defenses figured out how to stop us, prevent the short pass and make us beat them mid-deep. We couldn't beat them mid-deep because fitz is limited as a qb and cannot CONSISTENTLY move the chains throwing mid-deep passes. Blame the wrs on many drops. Blame the qb for many more bad passes. He had 23 picks. I'd like to know how many of those picks should have been caught by our receivers. Anyone know?

PTR It's not fitzs fault the pats scored 49. It is his fault that we were scoreless for the final 3 qtrs. Also, when you throw FOUR picks (1 for a td), it allows the opposition to score more points. I have yet to see the fitz bashers say our team is respectable and fitz is the only reason we lose. I know we have MANY issues. I also know that QB is the most important position. The qb gets the most credit for winning. The qb gets the most blame when losing. This isn't anything new. Stats are kept for QB's career wins. Does anyone know who the Nfls leader in DT wins?
