John Cocktosten Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 (edited) My buddy sent me the draft grid for the Vietnam War. I can't even imagine the feeling that people must have had watching the birth dates being called live on TV. Btw, 1-195 went. I would have been one of the lucky ones. U? Story: http://www.historynet.com/live-from-dc-its-lottery-night-1969.htm Grid: http://www.historynet.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/1969-lotterynumbers.pdf Edited January 1, 2012 by John Cocktosten
Mr_Blizzard Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Yes I would have been drafted, and I probably would have done the same thing that I did in 1978. I joined the U.S. Air Force. I assume that I would have done a tour in Vietnam, Thailand, or the Philippines. When I joined, there were still a few guys (6-year wonders) on their first enlistment that had spent time in 'Nam.
AxelRipper Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 By grid, yes at 77. However, being an only child I would have been exempt.
Miyagi-Do Karate Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 194. Would have just snuck in. Kind of scary to think about it.
BillsWatch Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Nope. Close to end of 2nd third probably would be declared medically ineligible anyways.
Dr. Fong Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 No I wouldn't have. My number was 365. I assume that is the highest number in the grid.
Marv's Neighbor Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Graduated in '69, went in USAF in 70, and never left Texas. God I Hate Texas!
Chef Jim Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 No I wouldn't have. My number was 365. I assume that is the highest number in the grid. No that would be 366 for the leap year babies. And I would have been 124. I was too young (I had to register at 18 but the draft was over by then), but my older sisters had friends who went. I remember one of them coming home and telling me a "bedtime story" of what he saw. I used to love to play army as all kids did. What he told me scared the living crap out of me. To this day I don't remember what he said only that I don't think I got any sleep that night.
BuffaloBill Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Had I been of age I would have been in though I likely would have been exempted for medical reasons.
KD in CA Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Yup. I took drum lessons as a kid and remember my teacher telling me about this, how he and his buddies all had to wait for the lottery. He wasn't picked.
Captain Hindsight Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 I was #50... tho I am exempt now due to medical issues
Chef Jim Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 I was #50... tho I am exempt now due to medical issues Lot of people with medical issues on this board.
boyst Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Although I am now 30 years old, I would and will always be exempt as a 2-C. While I would struggle not to fight for the country I was lucky enough to be born in I believe my asset to this country is in my occupation not my body.
Beerball Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Had I been of age I would have been in though I likely would have been exempted for medical reasons. Section 8?
Just Jack Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Number 172. I was going through some boxes of old stuff and found my selective service card the other week. I don't believe I need to hang onto it now since it's over 20 years old.
Jim in Anchorage Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Lot of people with medical issues on this board. Whole place is 4-F.
