jumbalaya Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 I saw a review of the final drive on SportCenter. The ESPN guys reviewing the plays (I forget who they were) were really angry about the terrible ref calls. It made some of the terrible calls that Bills fans have whined about look like no big deal in comparison. The refs definitely won that game for the Colts. They didn't even try to disguise it. How about the blatant pass interference by Drayton Florence when the Denver game was still up for grabs that resulted on third down. Florence sux and he should have been flagged.
Doc Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 How about the blatant pass interference by Drayton Florence when the Denver game was still up for grabs that resulted on third down. Florence sux and he should have been flagged. Yep. I made mention of it in the Shout Box during the game.
Mr. WEO Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 Not exactly. But I know you know the point I'm trying to make. It seems to be changing. What is your point again?
Gray Beard Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 How about the blatant pass interference by Drayton Florence when the Denver game was still up for grabs that resulted on third down. Florence sux and he should have been flagged. Williams got away with one also. The Bills seemed to get the benefit of a few calls in that game. I honestly don't think there is a conspiracy, I just think the calls are inconsistent, both from game to game as well as within a game. It's hard to call every penalty correctly, and there are several times when it's up to the ref's individual judgement or point of view. It's also hard for a ref to be 100% objective, I'm sure they have favorite teams and players. I know, I know... they are professional and that's what they get paid to do. But they are human, and humans make mistakes and humans have preferences. Just like the announcers are supposed to be objective, but after a while in most games you can tell which teams and which players the announcers are biased toward. It's all part of the game. I also wonder how much the players banter influences the way the refs call a game. Does Brady get more calls to go his way because he is a big name player, and he is obviously worried about getting hit in the knees? He sure whines to the ref whenever somebody gets within five yards of him. I'm sure there are several players that the refs are more prone to protect, and several players that the refs are more prone to penalize.
RkFast Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 Yeah....the refs are intentionally doing a bad job. BB never disappoints.
Doc Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 It seems to be changing. What is your point again? Okay, I guess you don't. The point was that it's happened before, so to dismiss it outright it naivete at best. Most everyone agrees that the the officials' performance is unacceptable/substandard, for whatever reason. But doing nothing, as the NFL seems to be doing since things have only been getting worse, looks bad on them. Unless they like the results.
bowery4 Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 The NFL would lose face if the had to "agree that refs make mistakes"?? This is a crazy statement. Refs themselves have publically admitted blown calls ("mistakes") as has the NFL. And do you really, truly believe that a reporter would hold back on a story implicating the NFL, the mafia, space aliens----whoever--in a massive game fixing scandal Come on--there is no way you really believe this! He would rather continue to be some media outlet's beat reporter and have access to the press buffet table and the opportunity to ask completely inane questions in the locker room after wins/losses, instead of becoming the most famous investigative reporter of his time?? That is just nuts. The guy who broke the BALCO story is richer and more famous than he ever was before he and his colleague broke that piece. "Just follow the money"? What, did you see that on TV? Bottom line: fans of winning teams don't spend time wondering about who is paying off the refs to make Orton v. Tebow a "marquee" matchup or help/hurt the Colts pick/not pick Luck in net year's draft. Okay thanks for talking down to me like I am an idiot, I really enjoy being patronized on a fanboard and it makes me oh so effing happy to engage in a dialog with you. So why haven't they done what I said and made the penalty calls reviewable, (by throwing the red flag, just so you don't misunderstand me) admitting a mistake after a game is over is a completely different thing. If the reporter did report about the "massive game fixing scandal","the NFL, the mafia, or space aliens" would probably have him killed or ruin him one way or another. Who the eff knows why OJ was framed? (see at least I have a sense of humor) BTW with out looking it up tell me the name of the "famous BALCO" reporter, you can't, or you would have used it in your post. Bottom line: I never said I believed that game fixing was happening, I only said things about why we wouldn't find out if it was. And yeah I probably did see "follow the money on TV" what you are to smart to ever repeat something you heard on tv? Last point, fans of winning teams don't follow the Buffalo Bills. Happy effing boxing day.

The only bad calls are the (rare) ones in the Bills' favor and the Giants getting away with holding on Manning's miracle throw to David Tyree in the Patriots SB upset.
3rdand12 Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 i had thought it was a balancing for the longest time. The ref realizes he made a bad call so they give one away to make it fair. Now i am thinking that if i see a Drayton pushing and tugging for five plays in a row on the sixth i am throwing the flag even if he doesnt touch the guy and thats the one we notice. I do not have an eye for detail as some do. Now contrary to the point of this whole post, i must say that job of deciding interference on a game changing play is not something i envy at all.
Kemp Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 I think that second one is a great idea. Did you watch the Houston game or just assumed we're spoiled little girls? If you believe games are being fixed and continue to pay attention to the games, you are far more stupid than spoiled. Anyone who roots for something where the outcomes are not being determined by the participants is a moron of the highest order.

SactoBillFan Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 Easy: -Become a bigger TV market -Get an owner who is part of the league leadership rather than a laughingstock -Get true superstar player(s) This crap gets old. What team would you root for if there were no Ralph Wilson? I guess it's easy to pick on a 90 yr old man. Maybe one day your accomplishments will equal his. Agreed. Fans still don't get it, Ralph isn't liked nor respected in this league by fellow owners. He again pulled his normal BS by getting with that assclown from the Bungles and wouldnt' sign the new CBA unless they agreed on no cap floor till 2013. I presume he thinks he will be Dead by then so he wouldn't ever have to meet it. I dunno, but I do know we need this clown gone as owner And agreeing with crap like that gets old too....
The_Philster Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_New_England_Patriots (I know...a patsies viewpoint, but I had a hard time finding information about this game). Bledsoe, playing with a broken finger, engineered late 4th-quarter comebacks against the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills to save the season. The Bills game was especially controversial, as the game was prolonged due to a series of questionable calls. With under a minute to go and down by four points, the Patriots engineered a long drive. However, the Buffalo defense appeared to stop the Patriots on 4th down with a juggled catch out of bounds. The referee needed to determine whether receiver Shawn Jefferson was inbounds, caught the ball, and achieved first down yardage. The referee on the sideline signaled first down after a conference with other officials. Several Bills claimed one said "just give it to them" (referring to first down yardage) in the huddle. Television instant replays showed that he was short of first down yardage, but the NFL had discontinued use of instant replay the previous season. This was followed by a questionable pass interference call made in the end zone on what would have been the game's final play. Bledsoe hit Ben Coates for a touchdown on the final untimed play of the game. In protest, the Bills left the field and let the Patriots kicker Adam Vinateri walk in for a meaningless two-point conversion. Doug Flutie, then the Bills' quarterback, later quipped "They gave them the game, we figured we might as well give them the extra point.” I watched that game and remember the refs giving it to them. I remember Andre Reed saying after the game "I heard the ref say "just give it to them"". The most egregious referee mistake I have ever seen. Anyone else remember the game? ugggh...the "Just Give It To Them" game was the first evidence that the Pats* are cheaters...before Belichick The Jefferson catch was clearly short and out of bounds watching in real time...when a pair of nearby officials give it to him anyway, it's definitely a case where the officials weren't doing their jobs in an honest manner...that play was the reason Ralph voted in favor of instant replay in 99. The Hail Mary pass interference call, called on Henry Jones by Terry MacAuley, now a referee, was ridiculous...Besides the fact that there's always tons of jostling around on a Hail Mary play, Jones probably interfered the least out of all the players going for the ball. Thomas Smith was the player who was most interfered with. To this day, I don't trust the Pats* at all as long as Robert Kraft owns them and I get anxious anytime we have MacAuley or Walt Coleman (the referee for that game) as the referee for one of our games.

At 90, he's not going to be leading anything, except for a non-POS CBA (cough, 2006, cough) that benefits small markets. And it's because of the "new guard" ownership that the NFL has priced itself out of the reach of the average fan.
Buffalo Barbarian Posted December 27, 2011 Author Posted December 27, 2011 "Just follow the money"? What, did you see that on TV? Anyone who roots for something where the outcomes are not being determined by the participants is a moron of the highest order. FOR THE LAST TIME IN ORDERED TO BE FIXED THE PLAYERS WOULD HAVE TO BE IN ON IT, WHICH I DON'T BELIEVE THEY ARE. FIXING A GAME AND INFLUENCING A GAME ARE TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT THINGS.
