Gotta wonder why Chan Gailey can't find coaches like this, but Mike Leach can...

Mike Smith's name doesn't appear anywhere on the Jets' official roster, a list that includes 19 coaches on staff. He's not on the team's website. To most Jets fans, he doesn't exist. As a coaching intern, Smith beats the sun to work each day, doing "the grunt work," Rex Ryan says, electronically diagramming plays for the defensive game-plans, helping defensive coordinator Mike Pettine run meetings, logging up to 20 hours a day, pitching in any way he can. Smith, 30, gets a nominal paycheck every couple weeks. He lives rent-free in Pettine's townhouse near the team facility. He's also Maybin's de facto personal coach, spending countless hours helping the former Bills first-round pick find his way.

"Without him, I'd probably be a fish without fins in the open sea," says Maybin, who is an NFL Comeback Player of the Year candidate with his team-high six sacks and four forced fumbles in nine games. "He understands me better than any of my coaches since I was in college. He's one of the biggest reasons I'm doing what I'm doing now."

Don't know why the Bills can't find seem to find any good coaches like Smith to help our pathetic defense - but I guess we should be glad he's leaving the Jets and headed to Pullman, Washington to join his old college coach at Wazzu...

I feel good for Maybin because he never got a chance here. I'd also take him back in a second. But it's not like's he's some stud pass rusher. He gets a ton of hustle sacks because the Jets secondary is probably the best in the NFL. He won't have that luxury on the Bills.

Get the !@#$ over it already

People need to admit that they were !@#$ wrong about calling him a bust before he got a chance to play on the field. Since nobody ever admits being wrong about anything people keep bringing up the same issues over and over again. Maybe if people actually admitted THE BILLS screwed up not utilizing Maybin properly and that Shawn "Good Gamble" Merriman was anything but that these threads die.

Once everyone sees and admits the truth of the matter bringing this stuff up goes away. Saying "get over it" is also a cop out. Who says people aren't over it but are showing how one organization did the right thing and is getting the most out of this guy. If we "just get over it", learn nothing and ignore our mistakes we are DOOMED TO REPEAT THEM. I think we have a pretty obvious record of repeating past mistakes.

So lighten up Francis. Admit that we screwed the pooch and lets try not to do it again in a year or two with somebody else. It's all about keeping the good ones and replacing the bad ones. Until we start to do that as an organization we will never be a winning franchise again.

The part-time "intern" did not somehow magically elevate the alleged "professional" football player to greatness.

It's a cheap article. As other posters have suggested, the Jets have the far more talented personnel surrounding Maybin and the schemes that benefit from the talented personnel. You put Maybin on the Rams or the Patriots and you get the Buffalo version of Maybin. It's just that the running back that would pancake Maybin has to worry about the talented MLB or DB barreling down on his QB on the blitz.

There we go again. Excusing our mistakes by claiming that Maybin with the opportunity and coaching couldn't produce the same kind of performance here. That's BS. I don't mean to be a jerk but what superior defensive talent do the jets have? I'll give you their secondary no doubt but good players are good players and bad players are bad players.

Sometimes good players play badly but bad players are always bad players. In other words Maybin isn't some bum the Jets coached up. He's a good player that is on a team that actually gave him a chance and put him on the field not because of some far superior talent they have on defense.

He is not a role player that gets significant playing time around these "far superior players" for the Jets. This guy is a difference maker with 6 sacks and 4 forced fumbles. I know it's a team game and a team defense but those numbers would make him one of our best players statistically.

My opinion doesn't matter in these parts, but I applaud this post. It's post like these that make a message board have value and allow people to communicate and relate to each other.

All I'm saying is that I don't buy the magical powers of the 30 year old Jets intern in the Aaron Maybin: Extreme Makeover show.

I do feel however, that his success with the Jets would be replicated on very few teams. I think Maybin is a system pass rusher. He's an Elvis Dumervil or a Calvin Pace, a skill set for a very precise type of defensive scheme. Maybin fits the Jets. Good for him and good for them. However, I'm not faulting the Bills for cutting him. You cut non-productive players.

Well, that sounds like a coach who's passion and love for the game will eventually land him a higher spot such as defensive coordinator or maybe head coaching somewhere. If he can get the production out of Maybin as well as others, organizations will begin to take notice.

Maybin wasn't to blame for never getting a chance to play. The Bills coaching staff continues to prove that it doesn't know how to put certain players in positions to succeed. They are repeating the Maybin mistake with Spiller to a large degree.

Mediocre to bad coaching can really ruin unrefined talent.

I do fault the Bills for not giving a 1st round pick significant time on the field. There are indeed scheme players like 4-3 vs 3-4 DE's. Very different players. That being said I think Maybin works on any team that needs a 3-4 OLB pass rush specialist. Coincidentally we have a rather desperate need for that right now.

Dareus who is currently playing NT and faces double teams every single play is basically the only guy generating pass rush for us. I could almost excuse the lack of pass rush with the other players if they were stout run defenders. SADLY they aren't that either!

that costs money. Maybe we can bring him here to be our DC.

Why didn't Maybin fit our scheme? What scheme do we run? Is there a defensive philosophy at all? Do we have any legit pass rushers? Is our D-Ends supposed to just try to take on two blockers and let LBs make plays? What good LBs do we have to make plays? Another bad move buy Buddy and Chan letting this guy go. I guess my point is no matter what D scheme you play you need a pass rush specialist and we cut him and banked on a player that CANNOT stay healthy. Maybing is laughing is ass off at the ****ty Bills, rightfully so. Good for him. I would to.

The guy is a one trick pony and is living large due to the players and scheme that the Jets run. Period.

Yup

No way he would be doing that here. Teams can run right at us and pick apart our secondary. We dont have a Revis or Cromatie for that matter

This is the same staff that drafted Vernon Gholston with a top 10 pick(I believe) and couldn't utilize him properly. We are not the only team with busts.

Another factor to consider is the mental strain Maybin may have felt being here. 1st round pick, big contract, high expectations. The stress might have been too much for him to handle given his age and maturity level. With the Jets there was no immediate objective other than making the team. And I recall he was released initially but then re-signed later so the hand of fate had some role in the results for both the team and the player.

It's all 'water under the bridge' now but given how woeful the Bills pass rush has been for what seems to be forever, I was never clear on why they didn't give the guy more reps. What would it hurt? None of the other potential OLB's were getting any pressure on the QB anyway so him not getting to the QB is pretty much what you get with the other options.

The other factor is the 5 yr, $25 million deal. What were the numbers guys thinking? My bet is the bean counters couldn't stomach carrying that big number on the payroll for a player they didn't see the coaches utilizing. So like Evans, Hangartner, etc., the deciding factor might have been no more than a salary dump rather than anything else. But that's just my jaded view of the Bills dysfunctional front office organization coming through at the moment...
