Mango Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 thing is the dl is most likely best set for a 4-3, with the need for a pass rusher. the sad part is that our lb corps is not really built for either, and if anything stronger suited for a 3-4 with them, even with their poor play, it is the truth
Sisyphean Bills Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 The Problem is purely Personnel. Well, no, not really. Not that the Bills have the right personnel, mind you; but, the issues with this defense go beyond bad players.
Adam Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Well, no, not really. Not that the Bills have the right personnel, mind you; but, the issues with this defense go beyond bad players. Yes, if only we could put kelsay at corner and Mckelvin at nt. No coach could figure that out. Only the "best" fans in the world could.......
ganesh Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 what about del-rio??? isnt he a pretty decent d-c?? jags "d" was playing well and they plat a 4-3 I think Del Rio was just LB coach. I don't think he ever held a DC position
reddogblitz Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 (edited) I too am not convinced we won't trot out "Coach" Edwards next year. Gosh I hope not. If we do fire him though, here is my list of prospects. Dave Wannstedt - He did win a SB as DC if anyone remembers ... So we change to 4-3. I'd rather win with a 4-3 than lose with a bad 3-4 like have now. Mike Nolan - If Miami cleans house and fires him, meet him outside the Fish headquarter and help him carry his boxes to the car. Have a nice contract in your back pocket. Mel Tucker - If Jacksonville hires someone else and cleans house he might be good. He was DC of the 4th ranked D in the NFL with Poz at MLB before becoming interim coach. Jack Del Rio - Maybe has never been DC, but was HC of teams with good Ds and he was a pretty D player himself. Mangini - Did good in New England. Would have great fun getting revenge 4 times a year. He's really got to be tired of doing those dumb show on NFL Network or ESPN or whatever it is. Buffalo Barbarian Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Who would you guys like to see as the Bills next defensive coordinator? Realistically speaking. Crossing my fingers that we let Edwards go after the season. Kevin Greene.
BuffaloBillsMagic1 Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Kevin Greene. With his attitude we would be attack and aggresive defensively all the time. Woould wake up this area like it has not been in years. Makes too much sense for our front office.
Hapless Bills Fan Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Sorry for this reply but ----------------------------------------- DUH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It would not surprise me to see Edwards stay. Disappoint me, yes. Surprise me, no.
JeffDepo Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 (edited) I think Del Rio was just LB coach. I don't think he ever held a DC position He was the DC at Carolina for a year in 2002 and Carolinas defense that year was one of the best but most likely because he coached under John Fox Edited December 8, 2011 by JeffDepo
Adam Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Just get us some good players. If we have to get another coordinator, I want Bryan Cox, but I want to see what Edwards can do with real NFL players, not cardboard cutouts. People in Buffalo haven's seen real NFL players on their own sidelines in so long, they forget what it's like. I remember all the the "Aaron Schobel is so cool" talk a couple years ago, like a bunch of eight-year olds talking about Lady Gaga and Nickelback.
San Jose Bills Fan Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 If Edwards is gone then Dick LeBeau, Dom Capers, or Wade Phillips. LOL. I think Merriman hurts the team by taking a roster spot for a player we could develop. Even as a 3rd down specialist his body can't take the game anymore. I wanted him to work as much as every Bills fan but he needs to go. My reasoning is that he'll win the job in camp because he looks great in bursts when he's healthy in August but he'll breakdown in the early season and now your 2nd best guy has taken about 500 less reps than he would have otherwise. It hurt the team this year and likely would again. In retrospect, the Bills handling Merriman with kid gloves was most likely a mistake. They kept trying to preserve him and as a result, there was never a litmus test as to if his body could endure the wear and tear of NFL football. IF he is kept on (and he has one year left on the contract) he has to practice regularly so that they can determine his actual physical state. Chan and Mike Nolan have previously worked together in Denver and are both considered part of the Dan Reeves coaching tree. Now we're getting somewhere. Good job as usual. I would be all for bailing on the 3-4 - it's too trendy. I didn't want them switching in the first place. As I argued from the beginning - you want to use the base formation that teams haven't moved to - not the one everyone is flocking to (and competing with you for the same talent). It's much like trading stocks - the Bills had it backwards and were "selling low" on the Tampa-2 and "buying high" on the 3-4. You don't have to go small Tampa-2 (ala Dick Jauron) to play 4-3 - there's the bigger "base" 4-3 that the Giants and Lions use, for example - it works just fine. The Tampa-2 works too - for the Bears and others, but it can be tough to get the right players to handle power running and very tough to get the right MLB who can stuff the run AND drop back in coverage. Every time Urlacher gets hurt, the Bears defense turns to crap. The Vikings also use a big 4-3 as do other teams. I also expressed reservations about the move (after some previous years of wishing they'd play the 3-4). You want to be on the front end of that trend, not the back end. For years, Pittsburgh and New England had almost zero competition for certain types of players because they were among the handful of teams using the 3-4. Now everyone is or is trying to. Jeff Fisher is still on the unemployment line. He is a great defensive coach, but would probably be looking for a head coaching job first - and I would expect someone to give it to him. Jack Del Rio was recently fired by Jacksonville. He was a crappy head coach, but a lot of guys are better when they only have to focus on one side of the ball. He was pretty successful as a coordinator for the Panthers, and the Jags have always had a pretty good defense. Assuming Steve Spagnulo is fired as head coach of the St. Louis Rams (not a stretch), he could be the hottest name on the list of potential defensive coordinators. He spent several years as an assistant to Jim Johnson in Philadelphia, before taking over as the DC for the New York Giants. During those times, his teams had some of the NFL's strongest defenses. Agree on Fisher as a Head Coach. Don't know how Del Rio would feel about becoming a coordinator. Spagnulo is a 4-3 coach so again, it depends on what direction the Bills are going in. I think Del Rio was just LB coach. I don't think he ever held a DC position As MJT mentioned he was DC at Carolina. He was the DC at Carolina for a year in 2002 and Carolinas defense that year was one of the best but most likely because he coached under John Fox I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. Jack Del Rio played middle linebacker in the NFL for 11 years and 160 games and twice made the Pro Bowl. He was not exceptionally physical for an NFL MLB but he was very cerebral on the field.
