Defense and Depth are the Problem

First off, the defensive coaching is horrendous. Even with our starters the D was sorry. Now with key players gone it's a !@#$ing joke.

When the defense takes the field I expect the other team to score. I imagine our offense does too. And knowing you have to put up 30+ just to have a chance takes its toll. Especially when the injuries start to mount and you have to start shuffling your linemen and put RBs and gadget players in as starting WRs, and with that makeshift crowd you're looking at a 3 score deficit after the first quarter.

Shoulda kept Hangman, shoulda hired a DC.

Defense and depth the problem? Open your friggin eyes! Outside of Fred Jackson and maybe Stevie Johnson, Kyle Williams, Eric Wood, Marcel Dareus, all the STARTERS are the problem. This is going to take a good three years to fix assuming the Bills draft well which they haven't done in a damn decade. :wallbash::angry:

HUGE overreaction. Look at the start of the season.

The D has been bad all year.

With the offense as LOST as it is .... the D looks even more so.

Levitre sucked yesterday. How many good snaps did he have?

Terrence McGee suffered a left knee injury

Fred Jackson limped off in the 3rd quarter with a calf injury.

David Nelson got shaken up

Donald Jones suffered an ankle injury

Brad Smith injured his ribs

Stevie Johnson shoulder and back injury

out -

George Wilson a neck injury

Demetrius Bell a right shoulder injury

Eric Wood suffered a torn ACL

Chris White has suffered a torn ACL

Kyle Williams bone spurs

the list goes on

If you saw the Eagles/Giants game last night you'd notice a HUGE difference between their defenses and the Bills defense. The Eagles and the Giants are both able to get pressure on the opposing QB with just four down lineman. Everyone knows how good the Giants front 4 is and Phlly made Manning nuts last night rushing just four guys.

We can't seem to get to the QB even when we bring blitz packages. I don't know if it's players or scheme but I'm leaning toward the former.

It's more than that. We have a FEW workable pieces, but there is a long way to go, as the season has shown.

Others have addressed our needs:

1) Pass rusher (DE/OLB)

2) LB

3) OL starting talent

4) We can't pass up on a possible franchise QB...the thread will soon come where we start naming possible franchise QBs in the upcoming draft...I vote RG3

When we pick up these pieces in the draft, I don't know, but our front office is not too good at getting help from the free agent pool, so we build through the draft and find a hidden gem among the UDFAs, as usual

Certainly some personell could be upgraded but I think it's clear the biggest deficiency is coaching. Looking at guys like Whitner, Poz, and even Maybin, & how much better they've performed with their new teams speaks volumes.

I read last year that guys who had ?s about how to play 3-4 went to A. Davis b/c the coaches didn't know Jack. So they bring in Wandstedt, a 4-3 guy to help with the transition?

After 2 drafts heavily dedicated to D that side of the ball is getting progressively worse. This won't get turned around until an NFL caliber DC is installed no matter how much talent you load the roster with.

Nick, I'm w/ you.We all knew at the start of the season the Bills had depth problems on BOTH sides of the ball, and that the defense, was still the weaker side of the ball. Now throw in several injuries, as Bills fan 4ever has listed, and look what you got.

PS: Nick, have a pint on me. RWR

the list goes on

First) Levitre was playing a position he had never played before, so if he stunk it up.... then blame the coaches for putting in the wrong position. He held his own at G & LT

Second) When Buddy Nix took over as GM one of the first statements out of his mouth were " we are not that far away"

So he believed at that time the Bills already had a decent roster that inept Jauron managed to get 7-9 out of, a brilliant offensive mind like Chan Gailey would surly do better.

What Gailey and Nix both failed to realize was that Jauron torpedoed his own team, and that O line, first by trading away Jason Peters, and then by cutting Dockery and Walker his last year. Losing both guards Dockery and Walker were probably the main reason that 2009 team went 6-10 instead of 7-9. He drafted Wood and Levitre that year, but there is a learning curve to every position. He should have kept Walker, and moved Wood to center right away, and with Levitre at guard that line could have improved right away.

Third) I don't care what anyone says... the Bills desperately need help on that line with at least one new TOP tackle and depth at center, it was a huge mistake to cut Geoff Hangartner

Fourth) The biggest reason why this team stinks so badly is the horrid defense being run by an inept DC! Plus the fact that they tried unsuccessfully to make the transition from a 4-3 to a 3-4, to run a great 3-4 you need top LB's, what top LB's have the Bills acquired in the draft the last 2 years to run that 3-4? NONE! Merriman was a huge gamble that worked like a broken slot machine.

Fifth) opposing teams have figured out how to shut down Fitz by jamming his receivers at the LoS to disrupt their timing on those short quick passes. That O line just can't give Fitz more then 3 seconds on most plays. Chan Gailey knows this, he has seen it first hand and yet has failed to make adjustments to the offense to correct the situation. Instead of running the ball more, he just keeps forcing the QB to throw throw throw, much the same way that idiot Turk Schonert did with Trent Edwards.

Sixth) So when the passing game isn't working Chan Gailey has no plan B....coaching failure! the defense is a sieve...can't stop the run, and now can't stop the pass either!! At least Jauron managed to get his pass defense into the top 5 with all those DB's he drafted. this is the exact same DB coach that was here under Jauron, and yet the Bills are as bad in pass defense now as they are against the run!! ....coaching failures

The Bills traded away Marshawn Lynch who could have helped the Bills build a power running attack when the passing game isn't working. The Bills traded away Lee Evans who could have helped keep the opposing defense from stacking on the LoS.

The Bills dumped Donte Whitner-Poz- Jaberi Greer-Jim Leonhard-and yet all those defenses are doing so much better with Bills cast offs

So what is the real problem... still can't evaluate talent properly....still can't coach. Gailey needs an OC & DC who know wth they are doing and are good at their jobs.....jeez, hire some people away from Green Bay who can evaluate talent properly.

If the offence could score points, the defence wouldn't look half as bad

I am not saying the defence isn't a problem, but its not all on them. Green bay seems to be doing just fine with a mediocre at best defence, Don't the Pats have one of the worst ranked defences? The reason why these teams still win is because they have offences that will score points and take the pressure off the defence. This is 3 straight games with less then 10 points scored. In order to win the defence would need to shutout teams every week. Thats not something even the best teams can do. If your defence gives up points, a compitent offence should be able to march back down the field and get them back, not go 3 and out

Not even sure depth is a problem.

There aren't many teams that can survive when their top 4 WR's are injured (Jones, Easley, Parrish--all out for season--and Stevie banged up for most of it).

But what if the Bills had a pass rush or 'stache running the defence?

But hey this is no reason for us to be playing this bad !! Just because half or more of our starters are out & the other half that are filling in are rookies means absolutely nothing !!

COME ON MAN WAKE UP & SMELL THE COFFEE IT'S ALL BECAUSE OF RALPH :flirt: !!! WHAT EVER !

If we can't see the obvious then you all need to join the ranks of ESPN jack asses . I agree WITH MOST OF YOUR POST !!! ALL BUT THAT ABOUT LEVETRIE HE HAS PLAYED 3 POSITIONS IN 3 WEEKS GIVE THE GUY A BREAK HE'S GIVEN HIS ALL FOR THE TEAM :worthy: , WHAT YOU JUST WANT HIM TO SLICE HIS JUGLER BEFORE THE GAME & GIVE A PINT OR 2 TO PROVE HE'S A TEAM GUY OR WHAT ????

You are comparing Rodgers and Brady to Fitzpatrick :wallbash:

Fitzpatrick is good but there are only a handful of ELITE QBs in the NFL

both teams have spent many years and many high draft picks to get where they are. Bills are barely out of the plugging the hole stage.
